The 2008 Mini E Cooper – A soon to arrive all-electric variant with 150 miles all-electric range.

Although not yet currently available, the MINI E will initially be leased as a two-seater. The rear seat passenger space is being utilized by the Li-Ion battery.

The MINI E will be powered by a 204 HP electric motor fed by a high-performance rechargeable Li-Ion battery. The all-electric drive train produces a maximum torque of 162 Lb-Ft which offers a 0 to 60 mph time of less than 8.5 seconds and a top speed that has been electronically limited to 95 mph. Energy Efficiency is listed at 185 Wh/mile with an All-Electric Range (AER) of 150 miles.

Regenerative braking is standard and a recently developed all-electric vacuum pump powers the brakes.

The MINI E will initially be made available to select private and corporate customers as part of a pilot project in California, New York and New Jersey. The cars will be offered with a one-year lease and an extension option. At the end of the lease, all of the E’s will be returned to the BMW Group’s engineering fleet where they will be subjected to comparative tests.

Fuel Efficient Non-Hybrids

The Big 5 fuel efficient non-hybrids sales are holding onto a year over year sales increase of 8.7 percent with both the Fit and the Mini’s grabbing an ever increasing share of the market. Looking back at the worst automobile sales month in decades, to see any particular model matching or exceeding last years sales volume is impressive.

This month, the Toyota Corolla is in the driver’s seat with 27,386 units sold, an increase of 2.2 percent vs. October of 07. For the year, the Corolla is off by 3.8 percent vs. the same 07 YTD sales period.

The Civic had a severe October sales decline as sales fell by an unheard of 24.8 percent with 18,252 units sold. For the year however, sales are still up 8.7 percent.

And then we have the Fit selling in numbers that can best described as “beyond expectations” in the worst market conditions imaginable. October sales of 6,478 vehicles yielded a still strong 28.1% increase over the October 2007 sales period. For the year, The Fit is holding onto a “Best in Class” 51.4 percent increase vs. 07 YTD.

The Toyota Yaris subcompact saw 4,871 units sold in October. This was a decrease of 13.3 percent vs. the same period a year ago yet the Yaris still holds a 25.9 percent increase YTD vs. 07.

The MINI Cooper had a showing that took everyone by surprise. What appeared to be a vehicle with slowing sales in previous months found new life. In October, Mini sales increased by 56.4 percent to 5,272 vehicles from 3,370 units sold during the same period a year ago. For the year, the Mini has a 30.2 percent advantage over the 07 YTD sales period.

The Smart Fortwo was received by 2,236 new owners in October and for the YTD, 20,392 vehicles have been sold.

In Canada, Toyota's overall sales were 8.8 percent vs. October 2007. The Corolla saw a 41.8 percent increase to 3,999 vehicles and the Toyota Prius was received by 326 new Canadian owners, up 84.2 percent vs. the same period a year ago.

Hybrid’s

2008 Hybrid sales have been following a decreasing sales theme and October proved to be no different. Even though sales are holding up given the market conditions, every model other than the HiHy saw a sales decline.

The Toyota Prius posted October sales of 11,804, a drop of 13.6 percent from the October of 2007 sales period. The Prius’ year over year sales are down 5.6 percent. For a change, Toyota did not report “limited availability” so hopefully there is supply beginning to appear on dealership lots across the US for those so inclined to purchase one.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid achieved sales of 2,792, down 23.4 percent vs. the October 2007 sales period. Year over year sales are showing a decline of 5.3 percent compared to the 2007 cumulative sales totals.

The Honda Civic Hybrid saw total sales fall a somewhat depressing 31.7 percent to just 1,621 units sold. For the year, the HCH-II is still showing an 11.5 percent increase YTD.

The HiHy sold 1,022 units, up 65.1 percent for the October 2008 vs. October 2007 comparison period. Year over year, this SUV based hybrid is still up 5.0%.

The FEH/MMH twins' sales for October were down 7.7 percent for the month and down an uncharacteristic 17.7 percent for the year.

The Lexus RX 400h hybrid reported sales of 615 units for the month, down 57.5 percent vs. the year ago sales period. For the year, sales are off by 3.9 percent vs. 2007.

The sales of GM’s hybrids show a total of 1,496 vehicles delivered in the month of October. These included 372 Chevrolet Tahoe, 193 GMC Yukon and 230 Cadillac Escalade 2-mode SUVs plus 325 Chevrolet Malibu’s, 22 Saturn Aura’s and 354 Vue hybrids delivered in October. GM has sold 10,549 hybrids in 2008 YTD.

Overall sales for 5 of the Big 6 Hybrid’s listed above are down for the year by 2.8 percent. Although this should be seen as a positive given the automobile market free fall the past few months, with gas rising to a high of $4.11 nationwide this past spring, more should have been sold.
