Fuel economy of “over 200 miles per gallon” could be possible with the next version. (http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/27/home-built-car-averages-113-miles-a-gallon/)

Avion on the road… Who wouldn’t like to drive this for a day or two ;)

I am a bit late on this one but News is slow and it looks like a heck of a lot of fun :) -- Ed.

“We thought we were going to be rich and famous,” said Craig Henderson, co-creator of the Avion, a streamlined coupe that averaged 103.7 miles a gallon — in 1986.

“Oh, we were famous,” Mr. Henderson added, with a chuckle. “For about two weeks!”

More than two decades later, Mr. Henderson and the Avion have been granted another shot at fame and fortune. On Oct. 11, he drove an updated version of the Avion through Washington state — a total of 263 miles and he said the car averaged 113.1 miles a gallon…

While speaking on the phone from his home in Bellingham, Wash., a few days after the drive, Mr. Henderson was in high spirits. He pointed out that there was no technical trickery or special driving techniques (such as coasting in neutral (http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/11/going-hyper-over-mileage/)) used during the drive. He said the mileage was achieved with a small diesel engine and a very lightweight body. “Anybody can hop into the Avion, keep it at a steady 60 miles per hour and get better than 100 miles per gallon,” he said…

The current engine is a 3-cylinder diesel taken from a Smart Fortwo. The engine is mounted behind the passenger compartment and feeds power to the rear wheels via a 6-speed semi-automatic transmission. To increase fuel economy (and improve handling), weight has been kept to a minimum. The Avion weighs only around 1,500 pounds, roughly half the weight of most compact family cars… http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/27/home-built-car-averages-113-miles-a-gallon/

The days of Basjoosness are coming! Sweet shape, can you imagine letting Bestmapman or wayne getting ahold of that thing? They'd get like 300mpg!

Hi Run500mph:

___Imagine if you were behind the wheel and I have no doubt you would you would get 300 mpg :D

___Good Luck

How well does it do in a crash? Most people will want steel cages, crumple zones, front and side impact airbags, etc.

only a .26 Cd? I would have guessed it to be slipperier (is that a word) than that

One of the best "revelations" during my time at CleanMPG has been the following:

Efficiency is easy. Lose the weight. Lose the drag. Loose the HP. Everything else is gravy more or less.

Back then, when I would hear my SUV friends say "why can't they make my car get 100mpg", I would think "I dunno.....maybe the technology is not there yet".

Now, I think "why can't you......a coach potato........run a marathon? Probably cause you are a couch potato." ;)

P.S. 1986 not a good year to introduce 113mpg car. :) High efficiency cars and the Texas economy are positively correlated.

No kidding. A HCH has a .26 Cd

Same coefficient, less surface area, therefore less wind resistance?

I like the idea. Could be a great project. I built a Classic Roadsters replica of 1952 MGTD about 20 years ago.

It would be a great feat to convert a wrecked Prius into one of these. (http://www.extreme-sportscars.com/gallery1.htm)

It's got the same CD as my HCHII and the TCH, I wonder what the frontal area is.

Maybe they forgot a 0? 0.026 seems too optimistic though.

I think it's stupid that car manufacturers can't put out more FE cars. Put a less than 100hp engine in a less than one ton car with a streamlined body and you're good for 75mpg interstate easy. The fact that basjoos can modify a car to do this with less than $1000 and no special engineering skills and that car manufacturers can't is ridiculous.

And now they can't blame crashworthyness either

This car has good aero, but there are a number of places where they could improve the aero on this car besides the obvious (wheel well skirts fore and aft). They have the stagnation point placed too high on the nose and then there are no wheel spoilers, side skirts, or wheel boattails to clean up the airflow around the wheels. Also I don't know how they are exhausting their radiator air.
