Community volunteers and Toyota employees from the Georgetown plant in Kentucky are gathering at the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort, KY today as part of the 15th annual National Public Lands Day activities.

National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands. Last year, 110,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants around the country.

There are several projects scheduled at the Salato Center. One of the most important jobs performed will be the construction of a 200-foot-long boardwalk to provide wheelchair access to an outdoor classroom on Center’s “HabiTrek Hiking Trail”. Toyota volunteers originally created the trail during National Public Lands Day in 2003. "We want all kids to be able to experience wildlife," said Laurie Davison, Manager of the Salato Center, "especially those with limited access."

Other projects on the schedule include general trail clean up & maintenance, and the creation of two additional short trails within the exhibit area.

"To see our team members and community volunteers come together for this activity is a testimony to the strong volunteer spirit which exists in our communities across Kentucky," said Steve St. Angelo, president of Toyota Manufacturing – Kentucky. "Our team members and the rest of the volunteers have a lot of pride in making Kentucky a beautiful place to live."

Community volunteers include members of the Shelbyville Cub Scout Pack 446, Franklin County High School Football Team, Air Force ROTC and members of Kentucky State University's Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships (CASS) Program.

Representatives from Take Pride America®, a national partnership program authorized by Congress to promote the appreciation and stewardship of public lands, including parks, forests, historic sites, and schools will also visit Saturday's event.

Toyota's largest plant in North America resides in Kentucky and employs about 7,000 with the annual capacity to produce 500,000 engines and vehicles including the Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Solara convertible and later this year – the Venza.
