TOKYO - Honda this morning announced that it has developed the world's first driver-side intelligent- Supplemental Restraint Systems (i-SRS) airbag system that continuously stages the volume of inflation, thereby combining increased protection with reduced occupant impact. Honda plans to install the new i-SRS airbag system on the driver's side of the Life minicar to be released in Japan this November.

A Honda innovation, the new i-SRS airbag system features a spiral-shaped seam structure and gas release control valve to control airbag deployment and pressure for faster deployment, reduced occupant impact and a longer period of inflation and occupant protection. As a result, the new system accommodates a broad range of occupant positions and potential collision situations.

Three advances with Honda’s i-SRS

Faster deployment -- Compared to a standard airbag system, the i-SRS can begin offering full protection .015 seconds sooner. The spiral structure of the airbag allows the protective surface to be formed at a lower overall airbag volume, thereby providing protection faster than was previously possible.

Longer period of inflation and protection -- The new system maintains a constant pressure within the airbag, thereby allowing for a longer period of inflation and protection. From the moment of deployment until the preset moment of deflation, the airbag is designed not to release gas, thereby maintaining a constant pressure and occupant protection.

Reduced impact -- By minimizing the distance of expansion into the occupant space and lowering the gas output of the inflator, the new system reduces impact on the driver. From the moment of deployment until the preset moment of deflation, the gas control valve prevents the release of gas. This efficient use of gas allows for reduced inflator output and reduced occupant impact.

Standard SRS deployment vs. iSRS
Honda has been at the forefront of airbag installation and technology with a number of firsts to their credit.
1987 - First to introduce a driver-side SRS airbag system in an automobile manufactured in Japan.
1990 - First to introduce a passenger-side SRS airbag system in a vehicle manufactured in Japan.
1998 - First to introduce an inflator with a two-stage deployment system, as well as an i-side airbag system with an occupant position detection sensor.

Sweet, maybe they can tell me what it means when my srs light stays on then.

Generally, a SRS light means that there is a fault in the system and the airbags will not function. You should address that ASAP.

Try this to start: How to reset your SRS light (http://www.clubcivic.com/board/showthread.php?t=115880&highlight=srs)
If it still stays lit, there's a problem in the system.

I have never been hit in the head by an airbag, but seen others who had. They definitely looked beat up. This is a good way to go and other mfrs please take note.

My SRS light showed a switch failure in the driver's side seat belt when they hooked the computer to the car. With 105K mi Honda fixed it on warranty. I think this is required by Fed. law.
