Cool, but to what end? -- Ed.

An unusual motorcade made its way across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge early one morning last week: a silver Toyota Prius, complete with police escort and camera crew, but with no driver at the wheel.

The robotic Prius was the invention of Anthony Levandowski, 28, a computer engineer who lives in San Francisco, works in Silicon Valley, and built the so-called "Pribot" in his spare time.

"Some people like to work on hot rods, boats, or airplanes," Levandowski said afterward. "I love robots." … http://news.cnet.com/8301-11386_3-10042320-76.html

Maybe the cell phone addicts and makeup artists will go for this concept, and let the car drive. It would do a better job than they currently do.

In i, Robot - Isaac Asimov had Three Rules of Robots...

LAW I: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being come to harm.
LAW II: A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
LAW III: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.Would we need rules for robotic cars?

Would we need rules for robotic cars?
Absolutely. I'm sure there will be long meetings in the future about this.

Slightly off topic but over at physorg.com i read recently that some guys at Stanford university have created software that when made run an RC helicopter could learn, through looking with a camera, how to fly. Not only that but it learned how to do stunts and adapt how it flew so it would get better. Other similarly equipped rc helicopters watch this and then can just take off and fly. The rise of the machines indeed.......

I think the rear is crumpled in the picture.

From the article:

The result? Years of hard work paid off. No little old ladies were run off the road. Pribot's trek, Levandowski said, took place without incident, save the car scraping its left side as it drove up the ramp exiting the Bay Bridge.

I think the rear is crumpled in the picture.

It scraped it's left on an exit ramp. Yes, newly crumpled indeed.
