"Statement" vandalism is still senseless (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/07/first-hummer-now-prius-hybrids-targeted-by-vandals/#comments)

http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/500/prius_toast.jpg Autoblog – Sept. 7, 2008

Video Clip (http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/showphoto.php/photo/4160/cat/565) from HF2007...also see Hummer owner gets hate message (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5482&highlight=vandalism) - Ed.

Vandals who mess with other people's cars are scum -- bottom-feeders who are beneath contempt. It doesn't matter what the vehicle being damaged is. Cars are a major purchase, there's often an emotional connection to them, and most importantly, they generally represent the owner's primary source of mobility -- getting him or her to work, to the store, to pick up the kids, and so on...

I'm not really high on this publication, but it has more about targeting the Prius (http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/09/prius_vandalism.html)

About the HybridFest 2007 video - I took the footage Sunday morning of the black Prius keyed (PC members - please jog my memory on her idenity!)...believe Eric Power's grandmom's PT Cruiser got the same treatment.

BTW, if you freeze the video at the very end, that reflection is me and the camera.

That was Galaxee from priuschat, and we determined that the target
was black paint, not hybrids.

Thank you, hobbit.

Sometime ago, a group in France that called themselves The Deflated would go around letting air out of SUVs (http://articles.latimes.com/2005/oct/10/world/fg-deflate10). Not anywhere as bad as torching - but can't go there.

This I have to absolutely agree with. There's nothing lower than messing up a man's ride.

People who steal cars, vandalize cars, torch cars, etc should do hard time. People NEED their cars to get to work. If you mess with someone's car, you're messing with that person's livlihood.

Those that remember the 60's (and not on acid :D ) - it was the golden age of protesting about any and everything. Seemed like protesting was a fad:

Vietnam War, The Draft
Civil Rights
Women's Rights
Environment
Generation Gap
Legalizing Marijuna
all of the above
none of the above
did I leave something out? :DThis seems like a sick fad - vandalizing cars

Back in the 70s, I saw a bumper sticker, IIRC, it was:

You can mess with my beer,
you can mess with my wife,
but if you mess with my car,
you're messing with your life..

Some coward kicked in the side of my 2007 Prius a few months ago. There was an obvious tread pattern of a muddy boot and a very large dent in the right rear quarter panel. Damage amount was over $900 and the car was in the shop for a week. The body shop does excellent work, and the guy in charge wasn't happy with paint match, and kept the car longer to get it perfect.

Needless to say, I'm not the least bit happy about the whole affair.

In the old days, they used to shoot horse thieves. Since a car is a modern day equilavent of a horse, can't those people who torch or otherwise damage a car be shot?

I really don't get the keying-the-car thing either, whether or not it's black. What kind of self-centered sicko does that stuff? Apparently, from what I have read, those people are rarely, if ever, caught. Too bad. However, at the great white throne judgement they will not escape punishment.

A couple of years ago some lady keyed my dad's new car just because he was parked in front of her house. She admitted to it and there were plenty of witnesses too.

Agreed. Probably kids getting a kick most of the time. I'm surprised with cameras and storage getting so cheap that we aren't seeing more cameras on cars both to give better views while driving, and to act as security by taking pictures on a regular basis & full video whenever an alarm is set off. Recording while driving would be a plus if you even need evidence against another driver. I'd rather spend an extra few hundred on that, than I high end stereo.

Lance: Still got your Malibu?
Vincent: Aw, man. You know what some joker did the other day?
Lance: What?
Vincent: Freaking keyed it.
Lance: Oh, man, that's messed up.
Vincent: Tell me about it. I had it in storage for three years, it was out for five days and some punk messed with it.
Lance: They should be killed. No trial, no jury, straight to execution.
Vincent: Boy, I wish I could've caught him doing it. I'd have given anything to catch that punk doing it. It'd been worth him doing it just so I could've caught him doing it.
Lance: What a punk!
Vincent: What's more chicken than messing with a man's automobile? I mean, don't mess with another man's vehicle.
Lance: You don't do it.
Vincent: It's just against the rules.
