View Full Version : Love to Hate the Hummer
Chuck 07-30-2008, 10:25 PM These days, a three-year-old Hummer H2 fetches $20,925, just 36 percent of its original sticker price of $59,070, according to the Automotive Lease Guide (in 2006, three-year-old H2s were retaining 58 percent of their value). Has the Hummer lost its street cred? To find out, NEWSWEEK tooled around the fashionable avenues of Los Angeles in one, just like the boys from Queens who drive a yellow H2 (http://www.newsweek.com/related.aspx?subject=Hummer+H2) chick magnet in HBO's "Entourage." It wasn't pretty. We had a tough time finding a lot that rents Hummers anymore, and when we finally landed a big black H2, it already bore battle scars—long key marks scored along the side. After burning a gallon of gas every eight miles, our intrepid car reviewer Tara Weingarten and Business Editor David Jefferson stopped at an outdoor café in the trendy Silver Lake neighborhood, just down the block from an auto shop that converts cars to run on vegetable oil (Lovecraft Biofuels said it couldn't help us with our Hummer). Parallel-parking the beast caused a commotion: David had to hop out to direct Tara, an expert driver who wound up cutting off a biker, blocking two lanes of traffic and rear-ending a bush before pulling into the space. The disgusted diners had had enough. Three flipped us off, and one even dropped trou and mooned our Hummer.

koreberg 07-30-2008, 10:38 PM Sweet I might have to pick 1 up for my FSP museum.
civic94coupe206 07-30-2008, 10:48 PM I dont think its even worth 20k. worth and actual sale price is two different things. just like a few years ago when gas was still cheap, my 94 civic is blue booked at 4,500, but its actual value is about 2,000 - 2,500 after bargaining.
YarSwiss 07-31-2008, 01:33 AM I just got some new neighbours by my place. There were new properties that were recently built that took forever to sell and now someone has finally move in.
Parked right in front of their driveway, with 3 other FSP's (a Bimmer, a Honda and some other one) sits, in all of its butt-ugly glory, a brand-new, completely black Hummer H2. I am going to try and be a nice neighbour, but the urge to go over and do something evil to that monstrosity every time I see it is getting stronger and stronger...
Ratnose86 07-31-2008, 01:38 AM Don't worry, they are hurting themselves enough with gas bills, and stress from overtime worked to support that many vehicles.
laurieaw 07-31-2008, 07:17 AM funny......most of the comments are in support of the article, with no love lost on the hummer. that's refreshing.
07mpshei 07-31-2008, 07:44 AM I've been in the habit lately of giving Hummers the finger while I'm commuting via bicycle.
I hope someone takes a picture and makes it a poster.
Indigo 07-31-2008, 07:49 AM If GM had spent the past ten years developing the EV1 and other high-efficiency vehicles (including high-efficiency trucks and *compact* SUVs), GM would still be #1, their employees would still have jobs, and we would be less dependent on terrorist oil.
Oh... it hasn't helped either that it's only been in the past 18 months that GM has started to take quality control seriously after 20 years of selling junkers to their customers.
ChenZhen 07-31-2008, 08:18 AM A few weeks ago we sold an 03 H2 for $18,999. It was yellow and had about 39K miles on it. I was kinda surprised to see it go, actually. I figured we could have thrown a "FREE" sign in the window and still see it ignored.

I would avoid this if I were you. You don't want to become the victim of a road rage incident. It's really not worth it.
07mpshei 07-31-2008, 10:22 AM I appreciate the concern, however I will be fine. The doctors in their hummers are too busy talking on their cell phones to notice anyway.
One could say "it's really not worth it" about nearly everything in life....
jamesqf 07-31-2008, 11:53 AM I figured we could have thrown a "FREE" sign in the window and still see it ignored.
Oh, no. I mean, have you checked scrap metal prices lately? A Hummer must be worth a couple of thousand, crushed :-)
Robert Lastick 07-31-2008, 11:59 AM People in California Key cars they don't like?? People in California pull down their pants to show all the size of their a$$??
Boy I am glad I don't live in Los Angeles, California. I surely do not want to be associated with that, or more properly, my parents taught me to be better than that.
I guess people in California have a different set of morals and ethics. Or maybe the media is trying to develop more interest in this lame story by injecting a little WOW into it, much like they do in articles on hypermiling when they inject WOW by referring to the DANGER of drafting, increasing tire pressure and hypermilers flagrant disregard of the law.
What is more lame, this story or the media publishing it??
So, is it safe to say that no one likes Hummers anymore? Fine with me, Mr Cheapskate, I never liked them anyway. Even if I had won the megasupeduperdoubledown lottery I still wouldn't have bought one. Hummers always reminded me of the old hotrod joke, you know, "it'll pass everything on the road except a gas station". Haha.
A reminder for anyone thinking of keying, as noted in the article, a Hummer: HMer's are courteous, respectful, law-abiding citizens and also, revenge belongs to the Lord.
Faithful and True.
RichXKU 07-31-2008, 12:51 PM For $15-18k I might buy one, remove the interior and use it as a tool shed. It already has a stereo, interior light and floodlights for the yard... Tack on a power inverter and its a generator too!
phoebeisis 07-31-2008, 02:35 PM Wow, keying someone's car- mooning the owner. What kind a CS people pile on like this.
They can only live in LA- a near desert - because they plunder the water resources in a 600 mile circle , and ruin the ecology of all the rivers etc. If being green is sooo important they should MOVE !
I agree - no way is a 3-4 year old Hum whatever worth $20,000. Kelly Blue Book is BS in respect to what you can trade in or sell something for.
I never liked the Hums because they just aren't "good". Aren't as good offroad as many 4x4 pickups or any Jeeps ; they are big with poor FE but they just don't have the people or cargo capacity of other FSPs like the Suburban( which can carry waaaaay more and gets waaaay better FE).
They just don't have enough utility for me- I wouldn't buy one if I won the lottery either. Now, a Hybrid Suburban would appeal to me if I won the Powerball, but I'm so cheap I would probably get a used 2007 Suburban and improve its aero profile to get 28mpg hy.It is just a lot more useful.

lamebums 07-31-2008, 04:10 PM The H1 was actually a good off-road vehicle since it was built to mil-spec. The civilian version just had A/C, AM/FM radio, etc. added to it.
The H2 was just a bigger, burlier Tahoe with the aerodynamics of a barn door.
And the H3? I'm not even sure what it's for. Doesn't it have the same 5cyl engine as the Colorado?
Edit: If I hit the lotto again I would invest in a small truck (Ford Ranger or Toyota Tacoma) to pull stuff. Maybe try to find an Insight in good condition. That's about it, really.
