Six-month waits for some, even as gas prices slowly fall. (http://www.pantagraph.com/articles/2008/07/24/money/doc4888d8f4d13e8874046644.txt)

With a hybrid, you will not be visiting the pump that often… -- Ed.

LEXINGTON -- A customer at a Lexington car dealership may have unintentionally bought a Christmas gift. Lexington Ford accepted a down payment on a Ford Escape hybrid in June with the understanding that the car may not be available for delivery until November or December, said managing partner Jack Marcinkewicz.

“The problem is getting them from the factory,” Marcinkewicz said. “That demand across the region is just that high for them right now.”

The interest in hybrid vehicles has spiked throughout Central Illinois with dealerships reporting two- to six-month waits for popular versions of the gas-electric vehicles that are more expensive but get better gas mileage than their gasoline-only counterparts. Gas prices have fallen below $4 a gallon in the past week, but fuel-efficient vehicle sales in general have been on the rise as drivers have coped with high prices at the pump this year. … http://www.pantagraph.com/articles/2008/07/24/money/doc4888d8f4d13e8874046644.txt

Neither of the two Toyota dealers in Northern Michigan even have a Prius option on their websites. It's as if they don't exist.

I just did a search and was amazed to see there are a lot of 2008 Prius hybrids for sale around here..
Results: 55 Vehicles within 30 Miles of 01801

Saw a bunch of used ones too. It seems like they cost almost as much as the new ones!

Hi Aspasia,

In early 2006, I was looking for a Prius. The dealarship in Escanaba was one of the few with a car. I ended up getting one from LaCrosse, WI, however, as it was a little closer. I drove the car back 384 miles on a 15 deg F February day.

Chicagoland dealers were all out 6 months for delivery. The dealarship in LaCrosse sold me a car that was on the boat in the middle of the Pacific. It took about 10 days to get to LaCrosse.

I had to do extra paperwork, and pay the Illinois Sales tax (no tax paid for WI) once I got the car back home. But that was a minor inconvience.

Xringer, which web site did you use ? NADA ? I found the results typically were only cars in stock. These cars were actually sold already. One had to email the dealarships and find a dealarship with unsold stock in transit. I used the stock situation to find out which dealarships were selling Prius's. Hopeing they would be getting more allocations soon. And just got lucky.

My fiancee and I are on a min-vacation this weekend at the river. On the ride down we passed through Williamsburg, VA (Bob Winger's neck of the woods). The Toyota dealership there had at least one Prius prominently displayed at the front of the lot. Surprised me, given the recent reports of their non-availability.

I used www.cars.com and entered my zip code.. The results were a lot higher
than I've seen recently. So, maybe some cars just came in, or maybe it's what
you said.. "unsold stock in transit"..?.

My in-laws are looking into their next car being a hybrid. They live in southern Jersey and were told they would have a 9 month wait for a Prius. Now their considering a Civic Hybrid.

Just did the search again, and got Results: 55 Vehicles within 30 Miles of 01801
followed by a list of new cars. About 15 of them are right here in town.
Here's the number of Woburn Foreign Motors, 888-475-4189, if anyone would like to call
them and see if those cars are really there..
If I get by there this weekend, I'll drop in and look over their inventory.
