LOS ANGELES - Having lost her job and her three-bedroom house, Darlene Knoll has joined the legions of downwardly mobile who are four wheels away from homelessness.

She is living out of her shabby 1978 RV, and every night she has to look for a place to park where she won't get hassled by the cops or insulted by residents.

"I'm not a piece of trash," the former home health-care aide said as she stroked one of five dogs in her cramped quarters parked in the waterfront community of Marina del Rey.

Amid the foreclosure crisis and the shaky economy, some California cities are seeing an increase in the number of people living out of their cars, vans or RVs.

They should take it easy on the homeless!

I've slept in my minivan on long road trips! No Motel!

Getting rid of the dogs should have been one of her first cost savings measures when she fell on hard times.

Too bad about these folks. I've slept in my car while traveling plenty of times. In fact, I prefer it , but the wife doesn't. And the cops do hassle you a lot. I'm certain that they get special training on how to be totally disagreeable such that you never go back to their city.

And RE prices are ridiculous here. My wife and I live in the city of Orange in Orange County and we can not afford to buy our own house right now. As for moving up to a bigger or better house, forget it.

I agree with Vooch, pray for these folks to be healed up and made whole. Perhaps the God of Heaven and Earth will hear and bless them. Those folks who have always been blessed and never had hard times are probably the ones who are complaining the loudest. Maybe they could turn off their mega screen TV's, put down their martini's, and go treat their neighbors, on the streets, as themselves.

Faithful and True.

Ive slept in my civic for 2 out of 5 nights on a road trip (moving). it sucked... my back hurts in the morning and my car was loaded, so the seat was up with little leg room the whole time. I had no choice on those 2 nights because I drove on july 4 weekend, and was in the middle of nowhere montana, and ohio, which had like 2 mom and pop motels every 50 miles, and they were all booked once I got there :(

living in LA is no joke, even the middle class have trouble paying for rent, let alone buying a home within 2 hours drive from their workplace. I wish the best for these people living in RV's, Its also dangerous too when they are sleeping and someone can rob them.

The lady profiled in the story lives off of disability checks, and is thus not tethered to a particular location. She should set up direct deposit, and move to some place like rural Kansas or Missouri.
