View Full Version : Hypermilers driven to maximize gas mileage
atlaw4u 07-08-2008, 12:06 PM "There's a thousand reasons to choose to be a hypermiler," Mr. Gerdes said. "There's only one reason not to, and that's: 'I've got to be there first.'" (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/localnews/stories/070908dnmethypermiling.35fa7769.html)

A fair and well researched article Video here (http://www.dallasnews.com/video/dallasnews/local_state/index.html?nvid=261252&emb) - Ed
Chuck Thomas (Delta Flyer) regularly putters along on the highway at 50 mph in his Honda Insight, swerves into turns rather than hitting the brakes, and, when nobody is looking, jumps from the car and pushes it into a parking space.
All just to save a little gas.
Mr. Thomas of Lewisville belongs to an emerging subculture born of the ability to track gas mileage via a dashboard gauge. Hypermilers use a variety of techniques to maximize fuel efficiency: airing the tires up to or beyond the recommended pressure, forgoing air conditioning, coasting whenever possible (sometimes with the engine off), timing their arrivals at intersections to hit green lights and traveling around 50 mph on the highway....http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/localnews/stories/070908dnmethypermiling.35fa7769.html
07mpshei 07-08-2008, 12:21 PM One of the most balanced pieces of journalism on hypermiling I've seen. Maybe there is hope for reporters after all....
run500mph 07-08-2008, 12:31 PM Chuck, Wayne, and Reid, awesome job! It really was a much better and balanced report than we have seen in a while. I think it will attract a lot of people here.
Wonderful!
psyshack 07-08-2008, 12:53 PM Grins at Chuck....
applemac*fit 07-08-2008, 01:01 PM Great job!
Now I've put a face to the name. :) Finally a good article/video on hypermiling!
nissynis 07-08-2008, 01:07 PM A well-written and interesting article. You guys come off smelling all roses after this one. I think that the general public's interest in tales of 100 mpg, the fact that advanced HMers are and will likely remain a minority, and the fact that police probably have their hands full with actual criminals, speeders, and drunk-drivers all combine to make the tone of this piece a closer guess at where the current media blitz will leave the HM community than the tone of some of the more inflammatory pieces we've decried of late.
PaleMelanesian 07-08-2008, 01:49 PM :D "That's a little bit sub-par" with the display showing 84.1. Good job!
Corolla07 07-08-2008, 01:52 PM Nice Job, Chuck! BTW you have beautiful Insight.
SlowHands 07-08-2008, 02:17 PM Great job Chuck!
Right Lane Cruiser 07-08-2008, 02:20 PM Wonderful, Chuck! I liked the quotes from Wayne and Reid, too -- good stuff. :D
laurieaw 07-08-2008, 02:25 PM who's that guy standing by chuck's car???? oh wait.....hey, you clean up pretty good, my friend!!
nice job :)
Aether glider 07-08-2008, 03:03 PM Great article!! Its nice seeing a page without a comment section and having to read the nonsense.
seftonm 07-08-2008, 10:33 PM Great video and article. Well done, Chuck! I especially liked how you made sure to say that you will still have power steering and brakes when you shut your engine off.
Chuck 07-09-2008, 01:04 AM Thank you for the kind words!
This story started at Wayne's home as I was leaving the WFEC...I responded to an email from the Dallas Morning News, called and after 45 minutes, handed the phone to Wayne for another 15 minutes. A couple of days later, Ian (the reporter) rode with me Wed morning - he did the video as I was driving.
If only he had kept the videocam on 30 seconds longer....he could have panned and made a closing remark: "this is what hypermilers avoid....". Just 50 yards away in the working parking lot, one of Richardson's finest was issuing a silver PT Cruiser a speeding ticket. :D
Had a second phone interview before the drive...after the drive likened it to Saving Gas Could Cost You Money (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12613&highlight=conrad) in higher traffic (Mr Conrad warned for going 50 in a 60 with no traffic to the Baltimore airport)
Yesterday, the story went online, but spent an hour with the photographer for the print version out today. We moved the car so the 97.5mpg of the morning commute would stay the same....well, moving it increased it to 97.7. :D It would have been easier if he had come in the morning instead of 2pm as the sun made an inside/outside picture challenging (like the lighting at Texas Stadium with the Sun/shadow problem). Wanted to get my face along with the dashboard...tried me infront of the windshield, then seated with the reflection of me on the nav by the dash. I knew photography involved skill, but learned a new appreciation of it today.
dixonge 07-26-2008, 11:15 AM Chuck, dude! I only got a fleeting glance at this the other day in a news rack - saw something about hypermiling and this familiar picture! I've been intending to get back on the CleanMPG site ever since to congratulate you. OK, so now I'm going to go and actually read the article and watch the video.
But again, congrats!
