2009 Honda Fit shown.
The 2008 Honda Fit – With 90.1 cu. ft. of interior volume, a reasonably efficient 1.5-liter engine, a full complement of standard safety equipment including ABS, EBD, TPMS, front, side and side-curtain airbags and standard features including A/C, PW, PL and PM, who wouldn’t consider one for their very own. With an MSRP under $14,000, the 2008 Honda Fit is a feature laden and fuel efficient sub-compact that others have apparently discovered given its astounding 100% sales increase over the year ago sales period!
The second gen 2009 Honda Fit promises to be even better with higher fuel economy, larger interior space, and an even safer platform.
Hybrid’s
Hybrids had their second tough month in a row due to battery supply constraints with Toyota and Ford hybrids.
The Toyota Prius posted June sales of 11,765, a steep drop of 25.5% from the June of 2007 reporting period. The second large monthly sales decline in a row, the Prius’ year over year 08 sales vs. 07 is now down 2.6%. Toyota reported “limited availability” again for their most popular hybrid which does not bode well for yearly sales or customers who are literally standing in line to own one for themselves.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid achieved sales of 3,054, down a sizable 37.9% vs. the June 2007 sales period. Year over year sales are still up by 9.5% compared to the 2007 cumulative sales totals but with supply issues, the TCH is in short supply all across the country.
The Honda Civic Hybrid saw total sales of 2,710 sold, down 6.1% compared to the June 2007 sales period. The HCH-II is still up 11.8% year to date however.
The HiHy sold 1,511 units, down 29.3% for the June 2008 vs. June 2007 comparison period. Year over year, the SUV based hybrid is down 8.2%.
The FEH/MMH twins' sales levels were yet another disappointment as they simply cannot be found on dealership lots? Only 1,912 units were sold vs. 2,526 a year ago, down 14.8% from the June 07 sales period. Year over year is showing a drop of 14.7%.
The Lexus RX 400h hybrid reported sales of 1,330 units for the month, down 4.2% vs. the year ago sales period. For the year, sales are still up by 5.1% vs. 2007.
Overall sales of the Big 6 Hybrids listed above are down for the year by 0.3% and accelerating even with record oil prices and more than $4.00 gasoline throughout most of the country due to the shortage of batteries we keep hearing rumors about.
Fuel Efficient Non-Hybrids
The Big 5 fuel efficient non-hybrids sales are still accelerating with a year over year increase of 14.5%. As gasoline prices hold near $4.00 per gallon, the Toyota Corolla has regained the top spot bypassing the Honda Civic. As the two battle against one another for the monthly sales title, both again outsold every other model available in the US including the ubiquitous Ford F-150. This is the second month in a row since the early 90s that a car, not a pickup, was the best selling vehicle in the United States.
The sales leading Toyota Corolla saw 42,180 units arrive in new owners hands, an increase of 30% over the year ago sales period. For the year, the Corolla is actually down some 3.2% vs. the same YTD 07 sales period.
And right on the Corolla’s heels is the Civic with 39,967 units sold in the month, an increase of 23.1% vs. the year-ago period.
The Honda Fit’s total June sales of 10,003 vehicles is the single best showing of the entire group with an astounding 100.5% increase over June of 2007 sales.
The Toyota Yaris subcompact saw 8,471 units sold yielding an increase of 4.1% vs. the same period a year ago.
The MINI Cooper also had a good month with sales up 24.8% to 5,211 cars compared to 4,174 sold during the same period a year ago.
Finally the Smart ForTwo saw 2,545 units sold last month.
