Fuel-efficient vehicles garner new cachet. (http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080629/COL14/806290584/1014/BUSINESS01)

2009 Chevrolet Cobalt XFE -- 25/37 City/Highway per the 08 EPA matching the mighty Corolla on the highway.

In the near future, anything under 40 mpg highway will be a gas guzzler ;) -- Ed.

Get ready for Green Chic.

For decades, automakers have sold special models that promise extra performance and off-road ability. Established badges like SS, GTI and Trail Rated soon may be joined by a new line of sub-brands identifying models as having exceptionally low fuel consumption and environmental impact.

That's already happened in Europe, home to sky-high fuel prices and powerful Green political parties. Good fuel efficiency has become synonymous with social responsibility across the continent.

Now General Motors has tweaked two of its U.S.-built compact cars for better fuel economy and taken the unusual step of using the same name -- XFE -- for the trim level on cars sold by two different divisions.

The Chevrolet Cobalt XFE and Pontiac G5 XFE both offer better fuel economy than regular Cobalt’s and G5s, thanks to quick action by GM's engineering and marketing teams. The 2008 Cobalt XFE went on sale in April with a 9% improvement in its EPA fuel economy ratings to 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. The Cobalt XFE gains another mile per gallon on the highway for 2009, improving to 37 mpg The Pontiac G5, which sells in far lower numbers than the Cobalt, matches the Chevrolet's fuel economy.

To get the improvement, GM engineers revised the cars' engine calibrations, changed their final-drive ratio and switched to low rolling-resistance tires. Those modifications mean the XFE's acceleration and handling are not quite as good as other Cobalt’s and G5s, but the trade-off created a new model that was right for the times and ripe to be advertised… http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080629/COL14/806290584/1014/BUSINESS01

Lemme tell ya: In the future, no car I own will have less than 35 MPG. I'd rather have 40+ if I can afford a car that will deliver that performnance.

I'm left hoping that Honda will catch on and rerelease lean burn in their engines:Banane43:

I have a '05 Cobalt and sent an e-mail to GM over a year ago suggesting they advertise the high mileage capability of the 5M Cobalt. Unfortunately, they said it was against GM policy to accept outside advertising ideas.

Last year I was getting 40.2 MPG based on the Cobalt fuel economy gage. Today the gage shows 46.7 mpg (about 3 mpg high). They should have listened to me. See the text of my e-mail and their response:

Message : I was just listening (on 5/18/07) to the NOW on Public TV and your top engineers were talking about how difficult it is to make a car that gets good gas milage that people will buy. I don't know if you know that you already make a car that gets very good milage. My car is a Chevy Cobalt and right now, in the Spring, the Economy meter says it is getting 40.2 average miles per gallon. Checking by using the gallons consumed at the pump, I get about 1 mpg less. Contact me if you want to know how I do it. You are missing a good sales opportunity to a frugal section of the US population. Gas is $3.17 per gallon here in NY.

You would think that the fact that people are scrambling to buy 17-year-old piece-of-crap Geo Metros on Ebay for $7000-8000 would cause a giant light bulb to turn on over the heads of the Big 3, and I hope someone over there is finally getting the message!

Psst: Detroit, you can actually market cars for their fuel economy, and if you make good ones, you can raise the price! Imagine that! A large barge is not necessary for profits.

hmmm, i seem to remember saying several times that if they make it trendy, and convince people it's the chic thing to do, they will sell. they sold 'em the FSPs, now they can push the opposite directions. the sheeple will follow.

I suspect that GE won't accept outside advertising ideas because they don't want to be sued by someone who makes a suggestion and then claims ownership (or whatever) of the idea.
