View Full Version : NYT: Going Hyper Over Gas Mileage
Chuck 06-11-2008, 03:07 PM Plenty of angry speeders attempting to project hypermilers as "the enemy" in the comments section (http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/11/going-hyper-over-mileage/?hp)
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/501/Randall_Burkhalter_-_Honda_Insight_on_the_road.jpgAzadeh Ensha - New York Times - June 11, 2008
A fair rendering by the nation's leading paper if you discount the mention of exaggerated practices like drafting - Ed
With average gasoline prices hitting a record $4 a gallon, drivers are increasingly looking for ways to cut fuel costs.
Chief among this group are the hypermilers.
Hypermilers use a variety of techniques — ranging from the manufacturer-recommended to the illegal — to maximize their mileage. This includes keeping up on vehicle maintenance, especially oil changes and tire pressure; driving at or below the speed limit; and more dangerous tactics like coasting or following closely behind larger vehicles the way Nascar racers draft on superspeedways.…http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/11/going-hyper-over-mileage/?hp
laurieaw 06-11-2008, 03:34 PM i stumbled over this earlier in the day, and in my disgust, gave up reading it. i have about reached my limit with this crap.
Chuck 06-11-2008, 03:36 PM Laurie - that's why I commented there. ;)
I'm always amazed by some of the comments on these articles. Peoples rhetoric is starting to sound down right murderous when they hear someone is driving within the posted speed limit. How has our society gotten so out of touch with reality. There is a link to an article similar to The Onion in the comments. It's vulgar and not suitable for a wide audience, but it's a not-so-far-off satire of some of the comments on the NYT piece:

Squint 06-11-2008, 04:12 PM Maybe it's time to stop talking to the media if they can't be impartial and people react to the articles with anger.
Those out there who want to learn can use Google.
A024523 06-11-2008, 04:13 PM I tried posting a comment for that article 35 minutes ago, and nothing showed up. Perhaps they (NYT) only post comments that they agree with?
Vooch 06-11-2008, 05:13 PM old media is so out of touch - pity them
bullwinkle428 06-11-2008, 07:25 PM Some absolutely head-shaking comments following the article. The justifications for speeding are becoming utterly laughable!!
Some people really need to start checking their inflated sense of self-importance...

Note to myself: save the NYT comments and post them when prices are at $7.00. We just reached $4.00, and the US economy is in a recession, Detroit in a depression and only two years ago, a bunch of defensive gas hogs were screaming at me they did not care if they paid $10 a gallon...they should have been more careful about what they wished for...
diamondlarry 06-11-2008, 07:36 PM They haven't bothered to post my comment either.;)

That's the first thing they try to get across when you report for jury duty..
No, the earth won't spin off into the sun if you don't show up at work for a few days.
Those courthouse guys seem so jaded.. They must see a bunch of over-inflated egos every day.
I find it very entertaining to watch how they deal with jerks.. :D
For some people, it's all about them. Me me me! Nothing owed to society,
nothing owed to anyone.
----
It scares me to stop for kids to cross a street at a crosswalk.
When I stop, I do not wave them across or say anything, since
I know there is a good chance that some impatient jerk might pass me
or someone coming the other way might not like obeying crosswalk laws.
Here in Mass, I estimate that only half of all motorist obey crosswalk laws.
And maybe 10% don't exceed the posted speed limits.
p3t3blair 06-11-2008, 09:05 PM All these crazy angry people amaze me. Oh well its their loss so i am just going to ignore them. Those that are smart enough to understand will.
Earthling 06-11-2008, 09:14 PM Here in Mass, I estimate that only half of all motorist obey crosswalk laws.
Here in New York, no more than 10 percent have any clue that crosswalk laws exist.
I walked to work today, and walk quite often. I've noticed that throughout New England, there are lots of "yield to pedestrians" or other similar signs at crosswalks. We don't even have those signs in New York, or only in a very few places.
Pedestrians are on their own in New York.

Earthling 06-11-2008, 09:29 PM I got a comment in, No. 55.
The comments seem to be heavily in favor of hypermiling.

after the first few, it did seem as if the tide turned. is this a hopeful sign?
GreenVTEC 06-11-2008, 11:24 PM I have little hope for some people.
We can't even get people to admit the President is a war criminal and we expect them to ditch the SUV's and not speed! *Gasp*
I'm sure somewhere in the good book we'll find justification for SUV's and speeding. Before long people will using that justification for habits

Those signs were actually up at one time, but they are such a popular Ebay item.. :D
Anyways, NY had better drivers by about 2 points on the ratings list.

We had beat out RI for last place last year (DC isn't really a state),
but somehow, RI has beat us this year! I suspect they are cheating..
This morning we were on the Lexington bikeway(a bike path on an old rail bed)
and came to a crosswalk.
There was a backup on the right and a nice woman stopped her Toyota to let us cross.
As I rode across the street, a van came roaring off Main street and zoomed
through the cross walk right behind me as I crossed the center line.
My wife had made a panic stop and had to jerk her front wheel back off the street
to avoid being hit by the van.
Why did the van driver break the law? Simple, he like 50% of the people in this state is an idiot.
I once had a guy driving behind me go into road-rage one morning after I stopped for a
kid entering a crosswalk. (This was in a 20 MPH school zone).
Once I had stopped, the kid mounted his bike and rode across. The whole time, the idiot
behind me was screaming "He's on a bike, we don't have to stop"!!.
I figured the guy must have been a lawyer. If the kid crossed on a skate board,
it would have been okay to run him down like a dog!!
