"We do make it very clear from the onset that there are some techniques . . . that are not recommended" - Manuel Santos said. (http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=572297)

As gas prices continue to climb -- edging the $1.50-a-litre mark in Newfoundland on Thursday and rocketing up a stunning six cents overnight Friday in Toronto and in Ottawa -- drivers are adjusting their behaviour to get the most from every last drop.

For some people, driving less is hardly an option, so they have turned to either modifying their purchasing habits -- visiting gas stations more often but filling up less -- or to trying to maximize their car's fuel efficiency by changing the way they drive.

To accomplish the latter, many drivers are adopting a set of techniques collectively known as "hypermiling," or ecodriving. Hypermiling, a term coined by Wayne Gerdes of Illinois, refers to a set of practices aimed at meeting or exceeding a vehicle's official fuel-efficiency rating… http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=572297

Nicely done, Manuel!!
And plenty of plugs for the site... that's good to see.

I liked you focusing on the basics. Keep up the good work!

Very nicely done, you handled drafting really well and your description of the Scangauge was great too.

Another positive writeup from the press! Could it be that hypermiling is becoming mainstream??

One of the best articles yet, Manuel. Great job.

Here in Charlotte, NC...my local news had an extremely brief report on Hypermiling late Saturday night, where they mentioned Wayne's name along with 3 things you can do to improve mileage: 1) coasting 2) driving the speed limit and 3) I can't even remember the third one...the worst of it is, they said that the techniques can damage your car and the money you save hypermiling might not cover the damage...

I wrote and told them what I thought of their report and to check out cleanmpg.com or talk to me and I'll let them know what it's really about. I feel like my area truly needs articles like this or some well researched reporting on it. Lots and lots of jack rabbits here...;)

Thank you all.

I also have to give a big "Thank You" to Brendan for the great job on reporting factually and without malice. He clearly did his research and this type of work deserves to be acknowledged and credited as exemplary.

Yes, there's still much to be done to make "hypermiling" truly mainstream, but with a tireless Wayne at the helm and the support of his "CleanMPG army" I can't see why not. ;)

Hi Antonio:
No problem at all... I am of Portuguese descent which is only a slight 900 year split on our shared Latin roots. BTW, that is why I also enjoy visiting SoCal (San Diego) on an almost regular basis as well. ;)

Cheers;

Nicely done to spread the knowledge! I think the incremental fuel prices are definitely influencing more folks world-wide to opening their minds to the concept of hypermiling.

Manuel,

The article is getting into at least a half-dozen papers from Newfoundland to BC according to Google. :)
