GOSHEN, Ind. - About a dozen people are taxing themselves an extra 50 cents per gallon of gasoline and giving the money to groups working to break the nation's oil addiction.

The Gas Tax Club of Goshen had its first meeting in April to tally up the tax, and donated more than $400 to the Chain Reaction Bicycle Project. The Goshen-based project provides bicycle-powered curbside recycling, recycles old bikes and advocates improving bike paths.

"It's a way for us to be more mindful of how much gas we do use and take that negative use of our oil addiction and put it into something that has a positive benefit," gas club member Eric Kurtz said… http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-in-voluntarytax,0,3774849.story

Hi Swoon:

___I love the idea but let us all hope it leads to a more sustainable solution rather than just publicity? The organizer does have a passion given her war stance and Washington visits so let us pray this one has legs and continues on for the longer term! Maybe we can get Larry to go to a group meet they might have in the future and get even more info?

___Good Luck

Wow, I got scooped by an out-of-towner.:p :o Since I work right in Goshen it shouldn't be hard to get in touch with them.

It's a small world these days! :) Larry, that would be great if you could get a CleanMPG exclusive with the group.

Wayne, I think this type of idea could have some legs. Look at the voluntary systems that allow individuals to offset their estimated carbon use. In any case, it's great to see folks taking action in any way.

I just looked the guy up in the phone book and he would not be any out of my way for my work commute. It would mean having to take a slightly less FE friendly route but it would be the same distance and may be worth it. I'll see about giving him a call sometime next week.
