2008 Toyota Prius – 1,000,000 + and counting. Possible top 10 US sales leader if Toyota can meet the demand.

Tokyo – Toyota announced last week that worldwide cumulative sales of the Toyota Prius — the world's first mass-produced gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle — passed the 1 million mark, with approximately 1,028,000 units sold as of the end of April this year. Currently, Prius sales are being sold in over 40 countries and regions with the bulk of its sales in Japan and the US.

Based on sales figures collected through April 30, 2008, Toyota believes the Prius has contributed to a reduction in CO2 emissions by approximately 4.5 million tons when compared with a standard gasoline-powered vehicle of the same class and of similar size and driving performance.

The Prius was first launched in Japan in 1997 and began selling in Europe, North America and other markets in 2000. In 2005, Toyota began its first overseas production of the Prius in Changchun, China, and sales of Prius vehicles in South Korea are expected to begin in the latter half of 2009.

In 2003, the second-generation Prius, equipped with the Toyota Hybrid System II, was introduced with improved environmental performance and power. In August 2007, the Prius G, S and S "Standard Package" Japanese models achieved a fuel efficiency rating of 69.6 mpgUS on the newly introduced Japanese JC08 test cycle. The Prius S and S "Standard Package" models achieved 83.5 mpgUS on the older Japan 10-15 test cycle.)

Toyota aims to sell 1 million or more hybrid vehicles annually as early as possible in the 2010s.

To one extent I hope this is wrong. I don't want Toyota to sell a single hybrid in 2010...I want them to sell a million PHEVs in 2010.
I know they announced plans to produce a hybrid version of every vehicle in their fleet by 2010/2012, I don't know if they are still on track, but I hope that they are. I'm also hoping they all come out as PHEVs, instead of just hybrids. Worse case, I figure most of their fleet will have a hybrid/PHEV/EV offering by 2014, and that the Prius will be available in PHEV be 2010 with maybe a longer range PHEV by 2014/2016.

GOOD LUCK TOYOTA!
