I had a good segment heading home Wednesday – finally broke 60mpg. This doesn’t sound terribly exciting but I haven’t been able to hit 60 before in this direction as it’s slightly uphill. The best I can usually do is in the mid or high ‘50s. There were some notable aspects I thought worth sharing with other HCH drivers:
1) Trip A gets reset to zero as always. Again it happened that my mpg started off out of the driveway really well – but when you also get several green lights in a row, and can maintain an even speed with no one behind you, the trip meter can rack up the numbers quickly. So within one mile I was up to 50mpg, and entering the freeway. I was able to raise it some more on the freeway to the high ‘50s and keep it there all the way to the end despite the slight incline (averaging about 56mph). Using EV w/assist on surface streets to my house brought it up to 60.
Being able to build on early good FE like that (or as it’s been called, the “stars&planets effect”) seems to happen most every time I set a new best. I know Green&Blue has commented benefiting from it at least once, but I would sure like to hear if it’s happened to any other HCH drivers?
2) Oddly, I accomplished this while the SoC was rather subpar --down 3 notches (from total of 8). The SoC can often move up and down a couple notches in a day, but it’s been stuck at this exact point ever since I returned to work Tuesday. So the SoC being rather sad didn’t seem to matter to the FE.
3) Also, the car seemed just as eager to go into EV/glide-w/assist (2-3 bars) as it is when the SoC is more “normal”. I wasn't expecting that.
