Speaking to a crowd of Wall Street analysts in New York last week, Ford CEO Alan Mulally took a jab at rival GM's ephemeral plug-in, the Chevy Volt, contrasting it to Ford's own EcoBoost powertrain plans:
"Our strategy is not to do a lot of show and tell about one or two little vehicles like an all-electric that has no volume and don't make any sense cost-wise or market-wise," he said.
Ouch!
GM has made much of the Volt, even putting up billboards and aired radio ads for the vehicle, which has not even made it to the working prototype stage yet. GM says it will have the Volt on the market by 2010, though the battery technology needed to make that a reality still does not exist -- at least not in anything resembling a commercially viable form.
