woot:Hi-my 8 mile daily drive in my old 95' aspire is almost all on gravel, which is probably not good hypermilage country. I have gotten 41mpg on pavement in warm weather at 60-65 mph. Winter milage is mid 20's and warm weather milage is 30+ for my daily drive. Tire pressure is now at 40psi to see how it handles on gravel-if it handles ok I will jump 5psi until 50 psi or higher. My goal is 40 mpg.:woot:

Too much tire pressure can actually increase rolling resistance on soft dirt or sand. Lower pressure lets the bottom of the tire flatten out giving you a larger tire footprint and the tire doesn't sink into the dirt so much.
An old beach driving trick is to lower the tire pressure so the tire floats on top of the sand instead of sinking into the sand and getting stuck.

This might be a good thing to post in the "Daily Grind" Forum.

thanks for comment on tire pressures. Until they blade the road again I'll leave the pressure at 40psi, which seems to be max for safety. These small tires would sink in loose gravel, I noticed that last summer after the road was bladed.
I did cover about 80% of the radiator, hoping to warm things up faster and causing a leaner burn sooner. I got antsy today and refilled at 126.4 miles with 3.70 gals. I understand it won't be as accurate as with a Scanguage but it is is a ballpark figure and definitely better than last tank at 28.8 mpg. THe fromer owner told me today that the speedometer reads slow, mayby somewhere between 3-5 slow,so I need to check it and if this is true than the odometer will read less. Sorry if I get wordy-I'm new at this. Thanks again for reply
