The company intends to test the lithium ion battery-powered vehicle first and start marketing it by 2012. Mashiko Tabe, manager of advanced vehicle engineering, Nissan, said: "The first production vehicles will be for regional areas like California. We will later expand the EV all over the world."

The company is already testing its lithium ion batteries in the Cube, a car which is being sold in Japan and is reportedly planning to sell the next-generation Cube in the US. However, it is not known whether the new electric vehicle will also be called the Cube. Nissan intends to introduce the technology in a smaller car initially.

Carlos Tavares, executive vice president for global product planning for Nissan was quoted as saying: "If you look at the number of kilometers people drive per day to commute, more than 90 percent of the people do less than 100 kilometers (62 miles) a day. There is a huge potential there for EVs."

Hopefully Nissan won't sell it in just 8 states like they did with the Altima hybrid. An EV would be perfect for us since our commute is just 8 miles and church is a 40 mile round trip.
