View Full Version : Shaq's Monstrous Carbon Footprint

It seems as if the only thing bigger than Shaquille O'Neal is his monthly gasoline bill. According to the Detriot Free Press, basketball star/actor (if you want to call Kazaam acting)/part-time Miami police officer Shaquille O'Neal spends $23,000 per month on gasoline for his harem of automobiles. This, in addition to $1,500 per month for cable television and $17,000 for clothing, are figures O'Neal (or more likely his attorney) came up with to calculate his monthly expenses in his recent divorce filings. So, even though these figures should be taken with a grain of salt, there is still quite a bit of consumption going on here.

The 7,000 gallons of gasoline he buys every month is approximately 15 times more gas than the average American uses in an entire year. We wonder just how much time it takes at the pump to go through 7,000 gallons every month? How does he find time to do anything else?

Our solution: Have somebody point "The Diesel" towards biodiesel. Or better yet, have Shaq-Fu buy a fleet of hybrids for his entire crew.

A British environmental group called, Carbon Trust claims David Beckham is responsible for 163 tons of carbon dioxide yearly.

The average Englishman produces 9.4 tons. They claim David's "carbon footprint" is the largest in human history.

His lavish lifestyle is to blame: Constant traveling and his several cars and homes as the reason for his excessive carbon use. They claim in 2007 alone, David flew farther than a trip from the earth to the moon.

The Carbon Trust said, "With all his money he should be using it at least to reduce his own footprint. He has more freedom of choice when it comes to methods of traveling. He could also choose greener cars."

$1,500 for cable tv??!! WTF could possibly be on TV that's worth that much $$$ ? $17,000 for CLOTHES?!! I don't know that I've spent that much in my entire life for clothes? Although I did just splurge on a new pair of Redwing workboots for $149.00 on sale to update my 23 year old Redwings... that I still use for snowplowing and salting (until I break in the new ones a little more).

Don't you have to pay a monthly fee for additional hook-ups, DVRs etc? I think if you walked though his cribs you'd notice at least one TV in every room including the bathrooms. Maybe even in the closets. Surely the hot tub has one. All with the premium HD package.

So let's see, $23,000 a month let's go large and say he buys premium at $3.50 that 6571 gallons a month or 219 gallons a day or 9 gallons an hour every hour of the day.

Anyone really believe that? He'd have a hard time actually using that much gas by himself. The whole harem must be left idling round the clock.

My guess, just a gross overestimate by a lawyer paid to help Shaq keep as much as he can.

Maybe this is deserving of a News Article: What NFL Players Drive (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22898925/page/2/)

No suprize - lots of over the top bling bling.

Got a theory: many of these jocks did not have much until they became pro, then they when overboard with: "Man I'm Living Large!". No wonder so many of them lose it all after they retire - they spend it all while they are playing ball. :(

Maybe what the hybrid community really need is a major sports star to get a hybrid/PHEV/EV (Tesla, anyone?). That might be the thing to ultimately show the haters that they are in fact fun and manly.

I can't think of a good example offhand, though.

When nelly/50 cent/jay-z puts a prius, an insight, and maybe a diesel into their next video, the kids of today might start wanting those cars instead. The adults of todays are mostly lost causes.

They gave a 'Hybrid' Cadillac Escalade to the MVP last night ... to be out as an 09 model. Not really the best step, but, it is a step.

I don't 'hate' on them. If I had their kind of money, I wouldn't live in a 200 sq ft apt and walk everywhere I went.

I would buy some of the cars I love. I would build some of my own cars from frame up, a hybrid/electric version of one of my favorite cars. I would live in a nice, comfortable house. It would be built energy efficient, and possibly energy independent, but, these people don't come here to this forum.

They don't even know about this kind of thought process. They are oblivious to it. They buy into the 'scam' articles that were said about and are still said about pollution, hybrids, etc.

Go to AboveTopSecret.com ... quite a few will argue 'til they are blue in the face that global warming is a fakery ... and when presented with the idea of changing just to cleanse the air, not to prevent the ice from melting, they side-step the argument and continue with things like, the earth is cooling because of the sun being in a dormant stage ... forgetting that when it kicks back up, it will be even hotter than before. So, ignorance is abundant, people believe as they choose to fit how they want to view reality, not reality in of itself.

So, don't hate Shaq. Don't hate the futbol player. If anything, try to work a way to educate the sports players (and others of influence). Make them active in the movement of clean air and clean, renewable resources (not ethanol, not bio-diesel, but a TRUE clean renewable fuel and power sources).

It is easy to jump on a bandwagon of negativity towards someone that opposes what a group believes in, but, I emplore everyone to take a step back, see things how those people see it, and try to educate.

If you slap me in the face with terrapass stickers and tell me how wasteful and foolish I am for not nullifying my usage ... or if you politely, and, with reserved passion, explained how it actually helps, or explain exactly how it magically removes my pollution by paying a few dollars ... not just links to pdf's that can overwhelm some people ...

which do you think will win more to your side?

Abuse only works for so long, then rebellion happens. Positive reinforcement wins for the long run. It come down to flies, vinegar, and honey.
