View Full Version : Coasting Question
yi5hedr3 01-23-2008, 06:56 PM When I come to a stop, MPG goes to 0.0 as it should, and GPH is at .17 while in "Drive". If I put it in neutral, GPH drops to .14 to .15, so it appears shifting to neutral when stopped will save gas. When I'm coasting though, I notice MPG = 9999 and GPH = 0.0, so I don't know if this is the "Fuel Cutoff" that folks speak of? If I shift to neutral during the coast, then I get a very high MPG and very low GPH reading which may be legitimate. I don't know if the vehicle really shuts off the fuel in "Drive", or if the Scangauge just "thinks" it does....so, my question is, do you save more fuel coasting in "Drive", or coasting in "Neutral"????
BailOut 01-23-2008, 07:05 PM The Yaris will enter DFCO in Drive but it takes a while. Still, 0 fuel usage in DFCO is lower than idling fuel usage in Neutral.
Remember, though, that DFCO causes mechanical resistance while costing does not, so if you need to maintain a speed for a while or go some distance then coasting may do better then a fuel cut in that scenario.
Hi John:
___You would want to use a NICE-On vs. Fuel cut for a long glide. A FAS would be best. If you have to come to a stop unexpectedly, fuel cut even at high RPM’s would force no fuel and keep you from using your brakes although you are throwing it away with engine braking’s shorter glide distances.
___Good Luck

Thanx - I actually think I understand what you are saying - scary!

___Wayne OK - so if I have like a nice 1/4 mile downhill, use NICE-On, so I can glide all the way down, because if I "Fuel Cut" (throttle off in Drive) the transmission will slow me down too much to make it to the bottom? Yep, makes sense. Thanx!!!!
Sorry for responding to an old thread, but I had been wondering this as well. Got my sgii last night and tested this...
Going down a big downhill at a constant brakes-on 60kph, I was getting 84 MPG with the car in Drive. I put it in Neutral about halfway down, and the mpg readout immediately jumped up to and stayed at 115 MPG.
run500mph 05-01-2008, 09:29 AM Yeah Heep, its pretty amazing watching the numbers. I have had a SG for about a month and a half and when you turn off the engine (FAS) and coast, the number goes to 9999 which is the highest it can read and your average goes throught the roof.
I don't know what you drive, but if you do that you will get amazing results along with every other technique. Pulse and glide will also shoot your numbers to new heights, so if you havent already, definitely try that.
bomber991 05-01-2008, 12:53 PM You guys are lucky, when I go into fas my ecu just kind of stops sending data to the sg, so my numbers plummet when I do it.
run500mph 05-01-2008, 12:59 PM I don't know if you are talking about the same issue I had, but when I used to do a FAS,
the SG2 would basically shut off even with the key in the ON postion.
But Pale Malenesian told me to switch my fuel type to Hybrid on the SG and ever since, the SG reads MPG the whole time without interruption. This might apply to your situation.
run500mph 05-01-2008, 01:01 PM I forgot to mention, if you haven't already seen my vehicle, that my car is a regular gasoline only engine.

Ah yeah I had wondered about that as well as mine also goes to sleep with the engine off. I'll try the hybrid thing.

Yep - if you hadn't been on the brakes it probably would've gone to 9999 mpg, which means you would have been rolling for free!! :)
