I pumped the tires up to 44#s. The tires have just over 12k on them and they look to be wearing pretty good. I checked them today and found that they lost between 2 and 3 pounds in about a week and a half. Is this normal? Is the loss of air predicated on the type of driving done, local verus highway or on the weather, cold / heat? How often should the tires be checked?

Were they warmer when you checked them a week and a half ago, either from warmer weather or from having recently been driven on? As a pressurized gas cools, its pressure drops. Driving style should have no effect.
1-2 PSI loss per month is probably typical. I normally check mine monthly, but more often during the fall and other times when there are downward temperature swings. Always check them when they're cold for consistency, and because manufacturer's sidewall pressures are cold pressures.

I keep mine at 44 and check them every couple of weeks. I bought a small air compressor so I can fill them at home. I sometimes see a 1-1/2lb decrease, but not always.

The tires were cold when I initially pumped them to 44# and cold when I checked them the other day. I had just gotten back from Cedar Falls, Iowa. I figured that a lengthy highway trip might have caused them to lose air more rapidly due to heat build up, but wasn't sure.
If you think 1 to 2 pounds is normal then I'll have to keep a closer eye on them.

Was there a temperature difference from the initial to the recent check?

In the mid west the temp is always changing. I think upper twenties lower thirties. Between Chicago and Cedar Falls about 4 1/2 hours.

I have heard that for every 10 degree drop in temperature drops your tire pressure by 1psi. However, it's never a bad thing to check your tires more frequently. ;)
