View Full Version : About to increase my MPG a lot! Selling the Subie, getting a TDI

Well, it's finally time to step up and get better mpg. We've decided we can get by with a smaller car than the Subaru for our family's needs, as long as it still a 5-door hatch or wagon (we have a child and a big dog, so a second sedan is out of the question).

Our budget is the problem. We would love a 2nd gen Prius, but even used ones are way out of our price range. A Honda Fit, Matrix/Vibe or Mazda3 wagon would also have enough space, but we can't justify $12-14k (used) for the mpg benefit we'd get. We could get a Focus Wagon or ZX5 hatch for half that price, but it turns out that (despite the EPA website) only the Zetec engine was offered in these body styles, and that only does 2-3mpg better than the Subaru. Again, can't justify it.

There's only one other family-friendly car we can buy for under $10k that would give us the dramatic mpg jump we seek: a TDI Golf. We've been tempted many times -- we even ordered a new one back in late 1999, then canceled it after taking a second look at our finances -- but always got scared off mostly due to reliability issues. Finally we've decided that this is important enough to us that we need to just suck it up and deal with it.

We knew we wouldn't be able to get one locally though, because 5sp TDI Golfs are fairly rare -- and Portland prices for any diesels are through the roof because everyone wants one: even our beater Volvo is probably worth $3-4k locally. We bought that car off eBay and had it shipped from TX, so we're comfortable buying over the internet.

After weeks of watching, we finally found a 2000 Golf offered by a tdiclub member in the midwest. We spoke with the mechanic who's worked on it the last couple of years, and it sounds to be in excellent shape. It will take a few weeks for it to get here, but we couldn't be more excited! Sounds like the 42/49 EPA estimates aren't too hard to reach. Of course I'd be thrilled even with that mileage, but I'm hoping I can apply the skills I've learned with the Subaru (30+mpg over 6 months) and do even better than that. I'll keep you all updated once we take delivery.

Great! I must admit, being a subie fan it is sad to see it go. If you loved your subaru as much as I loved my two I'm sure it will be hard to see it go, but it definitely is a move in the right direction in terms of FE.

Can't wait to see your results with the new ride.

Sounds like an excellent move with a great price to boot! I'd think a Jetta would be more comparable to a Prius than a Golf is, especially for a family car - but a Jetta is another step in price for sure.

Great find and good luck with it!

Shifty35 -- the problem with the Jetta is that it has a trunk. With a small child in our family, we often need to carry 4 passengers and a labrador retriever. That makes the Jetta a no-go. The dog can easily go in the back of either a Golf or a Prius -- in fact, the Golf has several cubic feet more cargo space (even with all the seats up) than a Jetta and identical passenger space, despite being nearly a foot shorter.

Also, believe it or not the Golf is a step up in price from the Jetta, not the other way around. Jettas are a dime a dozen on eBay, and we could grab a TDI Jetta today if we wanted to. Being more rare and more practical than Jettas, Golfs typically fetch about $1k more. Same curse that the Civic Wagon was subject to a decade ago: as new cars they had been a niche and never sold very well, but used ones were always scarce and highly sought after (especially in this part of the country, where wagons have always been viewed more as sporty/outdoorsy vehicles than dowdy family vehicles).

They are very nice cars. We had a 99 Jeta TDI and easily got 45-45 before we learned how to drive. We have also owned a few Golfs (GTI and GL). The Golf is vastly better. Americans prefer the Jetta, but the Golf is so much more practical.

Good luck.

Just lookout for the falling windows. ... and burned out turbos ... and mysterious electrical problems ... and $500 to replace a cracked headlight lens ... ;)

Congrats on the new car. Sounds nice! I tried to convince the wife to drive a Golf when we were looking. She refused. I've always liked them.

great choice -

BTW on the Golf vs. Jetta issue - they are both the exact same cars, only Jetta has much less cargo space. Always go w/ a Golf - there is a huge amount of cargo space.

Another advantage of the Golf is that it is substantially shorter in length than the Jetta. That's a real benefit in the parallel parking situations I frequently encounter, where a parking space is defined as whatever you can fit your car into.

On another note, found out a great thing about the VW TDI: it takes the same size battery (Group D35) as my Subaru. That means I can move my awesome new Optima Yellow Top right on over.
