For those that need(?) a 200mph performance car, it may have to be a Miata or S2000, if that. Article just highlights cruising is the greenest driving - racing the dirtiest. -- Ed.

DETROIT - When General Motors Corp. pulls the cover off a new supercharged version of the Corvette at the Detroit auto show next month, it will unveil a performance car designed to rival or better even the fastest, most expensive exotic cars from Europe.

But the Corvette's chief engineer says the 2009 Corvette ZR1 may be the last in a long tradition of Detroit performance cars, endangered by stronger federal fuel economy regulations and limits on carbon dioxide emissions.

"High-performance vehicles such as this may actually be legislated out of existence," Tadge Juechter said at a recent showing of the ZR1, which is designed to have around 620 horsepower.

President Bush on Wednesday signed into law legislation that will bring more fuel-efficient vehicles into auto showrooms and require wider use of ethanol, calling it "a major step" toward energy independence and easing global warming… http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22340556/

Hey, give me one with the Prius powertrain and I'd be happy with just the looks and none of the speed. :D

There will always be sports cars. They'll just have to drop bigger electric motors in them instead of gas engines.

Those that want them, or want to make them will just pay the penalty. Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Rolls etc. have never tried to meet CAFE, they just pass along the fines in the price.

If allowed, they will dig deeper to pay the emissions tax.

Seems like GM has this propensity to say any increase in FE will have consequences of Biblical proprotions. {sigh}

The corvette used to be about being innovative. They used to introduce new technologies and designs in that car. Now instead of innovating GM throws in the towel. No wonder their cars are crap. That company died when Cole and Duntov left.

More scare mongering from GM :rolleyes:

The base corvette gets 25.12 combined. Whats even more sad is the tahoe hybrid gets 28.2 combined :rolleyes:

The big 3 just need to produce a couple models over the new mandate to average out the lower performers. As of right now Chevy makes a grand total of 4 cars that BARELY squeak over the new CAFE numbers.

AVEO 5 MT
AVEO MT
COBALT MT
MALIBU HYBRID Auto

compare that to Honda with that makes 7... all of those models that have FE's ranging from 37.5 to 58.8 combined. Toyota has 11 models that meet or exceed the requirements

Right now there are 57 cars sold in the US that meet the requirements of the new CAFE standard.
