I wasn't going to get winter tires, but I found a great deal on a compatible set of steel wheels, so I took the plunge. No snow yet, but overall impressions are very favorable.
This is the Dunlop Wintersport 3D on 16" Mazda6 steel wheels & covers.

A German press review on the Dunlop site mentions (comparitivily) low-rolling resistance for this tire, and it seems like that might be the case. They got installed at about 1/2 a tank, and my average MPG iFCD has been steadily creeping upward. Usually it tends to trend downward during the course of a tank.

I have some holiday highway travel coming up so I'll be able to report next week.

But so far, these tires are QUIET, ride nice, and there are no apparent trade-offs. They are only 33 Psi right now, and I'm keeping it there until they break in a bit, then I'll raise them up to 38 or so and see what happens.

Sweet. Once the time comes to replace my winter tires, I'll have to see of those are available in my size.

I got mine from TireRack. Nobody local had anything. First time I ever bought from TireRack, and overall the process was fine. Had them installed at the place I would have bought tires, if they had anything to sell.

Update:
After my holiday travelling to my parents house (2.5hr drive each way), plus some normal city driving for the remaining 2/3 of the tank, I logged one of my best tanks ever (35.9). As I have said before, I don't really hypermile like most people here.

I did not drive any differently, and I would have thought that the cold weather would have definately taken a hit on MPG. After a little wear, and increasing the PSI, they do seem a little noisier than initially, but nothing unusual.

Time will tell, but so far it seems like these tires do have some built-in low rolling resistance properties.
