I wasn't going to get winter tires, but I found a great deal on a compatible set of steel wheels, so I took the plunge. No snow yet, but overall impressions are very favorable.
This is the Dunlop Wintersport 3D on 16" Mazda6 steel wheels & covers.
A German press review on the Dunlop site mentions (comparitivily) low-rolling resistance for this tire, and it seems like that might be the case. They got installed at about 1/2 a tank, and my average MPG iFCD has been steadily creeping upward. Usually it tends to trend downward during the course of a tank.
I have some holiday highway travel coming up so I'll be able to report next week.
But so far, these tires are QUIET, ride nice, and there are no apparent trade-offs. They are only 33 Psi right now, and I'm keeping it there until they break in a bit, then I'll raise them up to 38 or so and see what happens.
