View Full Version : Out with the old - in with the older!

Well...after the frustration of getting the clutch replaced in my SVT, I decided to sell. Ford has no intention of backing these cars. At only 3 years old, parts are nearly impossible to get and are expensive if/when you can.

I decided instead to buy from my Dad our beloved project car we've had since 2000, a 1967 Mustang Convertible. I'd been hunting for a classic car anyway, since that's where I'm happiest, and when my Dad announced he wanted the cash out of the Mustang, I opted to buy it myself rather than let some hapless yahoo buy it. It's been gone over pretty well for a non-rotisserie'd resto. Drivetrain has 1800mi on it, and the interior is brand new. Most of the switches and the entire heating system is new, trunk detailed, and the 4-wheel manual drum brakes replaced with power disc/drum. Has won several shows in California, but has been sitting since we moved to Texas.

Fuel economy? Not good, but I've never bothered to measure. My '68 in high school got about 12 city/23 highway with a similar powertrain and slightly taller gearing, this should fall in right around there.

While it may not be a top candidate for hypermiling, one can't deny the artistic value of the older Mustangs. It's gorgeous! :D

Thank you for the kind words. The car really means a lot to me. I'll try to see what she can do on a hypermiling basis...but I'll be darned of 5 liters of torque under the hood of a 2800lb car isn'y pretty hard to keep cinched up ;)

Love that green. OEM, original color?

That's a beautiful car that'll get lots of attention. My aunt and uncle have a 65 Mustang in San Francisco that they still use as their only car. They only do church and grocery in it. They said it's so hard to find parts for it, but they won the car in a lotto. How do you get parts for this car?

Thank you! We bought ours from a couple who similarly just used it to go to church in, which is how it only got 92k miles on it before we bought it.

Actually, this is one of the easier cars to get parts for because of its popularity then and now. I can get probably 50% of them at the AutoZone I work at (things like switches, bulbs, major engine components, etc), which is not always the case with vintage cars.

For more specific parts like body + interior panels, etc. there are probably close to 100 major Mustang-only parts houses across the nation who stock and sell just about any reproduction parts you could need. When we lived in the Bay Area, we did business with Mustangs Plus in Stockton, CA, who always treats us very well. I still remember their phone number, 800.999.4289. And there's at least a half-dozen more in CA and a couple in the Bay Area alone, with a few more up in Oregon and Washington.

It is an OEM Ford color, called Dark Moss Green. Originally it was painted Lime Gold, nicknamed Slime Green, but as much as I personally liked the color, it didn't show terribly well and photographed even worse. The interior is the original color scheme. This combo as it sits currently, as good as it looks together, was exceptionally rare from the factory as they usually put in a black interior with Dark Moss Green; less than 1000 came from the factory with this scheme, so it always caught savvy Stanger's eyes.
