View Full Version : Should I lend SG to my son?

I was just going over FE numbers with my 17 year-old son who is the primary driver of our 01 Saturn. We were trash talking about this like we do everything else (who can eat the hottest peppers, split the most wood etc.) and he pointed out that although I was exceeding his efforts, I was "cheating" because I was using the scangauge. My first impulse was, "buy your own then.";)

He has a point, but his schedule has changed recently so I will be driving more miles than he will. I suppose I would lend it to him for a tankfull (or two) if I was convinced he would make lasting FE improvements in his driving habits.

Does anybody here have any insights/experiences about how long it takes some one to make how much of a lasting improvement in their driving habits?

It took me less than a tank full with the iFCD on the insight to notice my driving habits were bad... Took me several more to have a perminate change in them... although I'm sure I wouldn't be able to achive the mpg's I'm getting now without my iFCD.

I imagine his FE would go up with a scangauge and would also go back down when you took it back.... christmas time is coming soon and I hear scangauges make a wonderful present ;)

A year ago, my son asked me if he could have a SG. He had seen me using mine and liked the idea of being able to constantly monitor his FE. I think it was some of the best money I've ever spent. He was 17 at the time and was into driving as cheaply as possible. He now regularly comes home and says things like, "Dad, I got 60-something on the way home," or, "I got just over 70 coming home today." Quite frankly, he's doing every bit as good as I was with the same car and possibly even better.:) Now, at 18 and turning 19 at the end of this month, he has many of his friends at least thinking about FE. I think that if we can get the younger generation on board with driving for FE that it will be a VERY good thing. My recommendation would be: consider it a wise investment to get him a SG for Christmas. It would be far more beneficial/educational than any video game on the market at any price. Also, think of all the trash-talk you can have with both of you having one.:D

If you both have a SGII it would level the playing field ;) I wish I would've known about these a while back.

I think it would be a great investment like others have said.

And like the others said, once his friends are looking at the gauge they might start trying to be a little more FE with their driving.

I would let him borrow it for a couple tanks, if he sees big improvements you should consider getting 1 for him as a present.

My dad just gave me one for christmas...you should do the same for your son;)
(I asked for one, and he didn't have one to begin with.)

I need to come here more often. I didn't even think of giving the SG as a gift... I know my dad would really like one. Unfortunately, couldn't afford it even if I thought of it, :(
