View Full Version : Killing Power Steering while in FAS...

Anyone know an easy way of disconnecting the power steering during a FAS? Possibly installing a relay inline with the FAS module and when its activated to disconnect power to the PS fuse?

Question is that when engine power is started back will PS restart?

I know its a bit different, but in the subaru I wired up a nice switch that would enable me to disconnect my ABS while driving. The only problem was that I couldn't turn it back on without turning the key completely off... Not ideal and without a doubt installer error ;)

i wouldnt think the power steering would use much battery juice unless you are racking it back and forth. just a hunch. it might be a good idea to check out the current draw with an ammeter hooked in series with the fuse to see.

Hi Blake:

___When I owned my Insight, I pulled the EPS fuse for the last 1/3 of the time I owned it. It was so over-boosted at low speeds I could not stand it anyway. Just a thought and it will reduce the total electrical load on the mini-12V.

___Good Luck

Good to know... I'll pull the fuse tommorow before I get off work to see if its much of an issue... If not then I'll take the control unit out to unplug it there.

On a side note... just ordered a full complement of LED's for all the lights in my car. Hope they are not a waste of money ;)

Bumping this because I pulled my EPS fuse today and I love the steering feel now. My last car was a 97 Civic Hatch with a manual rack and it totally brought back the "connected" feel a manual rack provides.

Steering effort is still low when not moving, not noticably increased above 5 mph.

Now that I have MIMA with a FAS relay, I'd still like to rig up some sort of system to also kill my power steering when I hit the FAS button. I'm a complete electronics newb, but I guess I could try to figure out some sort of relay system that disconnects the PS at the fuse block. I rigged up something similar in a rally car for ABS, but the car had to be turned off and restarted to get it working again... since I'm basically turning off the car I hope it will work... Time to read up on relay's and such.

Hi Blake:

___Pull the fuse. I do not believe it is tied into the ABS circuit in any fashion (in newer vehicles, the PS sensors input into the ABS/TRAC and VSC systems) and you will thank me once you do. Feel of the road will be back the second you turn the wheel.

Fuse pulling is the easy way, you may like the feel of the manual rack as well. ;)

If you choose a relay, you can either break the 40 feed to the motor (same as pulling the fuse) or you can remove power to the EPS computer.

For the motor, you'd need a 12v relay capable of 40 amps that is dual throw - that is, it has a common, a normally open and a normally closed contact.

Break the wire and connect the two ends to the common and normally closed contacts, leave the normally open contact floating. Wire the coil to ground and a switched 12v supply (probably the one used to latch the 2nd FAS relay).
