Hi,

This is my first post. Have a 2008 Mazda Tribute Sport i 5spd (2.3 L engine....same as Mazda3 and 3300lbs to move around) and have been getting good mpg results--surprising I believe--and want to improve using techniques and devices that you suggest. Have recorded every tank full for almost 8000 miles now. The overall average is 28.60 mpg with a low of 25.5 and a high of 33.11. With an increase to 40 psi --tires-- have averaged 32.3 for last two fill ups.

Have ordered a ScanGaugeII and hope to move that average up over 30. Am very happy with the vehicle. Have noticed some ford ranger results in the high 30's and early 40's so maybe it's possible to do even better.

Glad to find this site.

I think you'll notice an immediate increase in your FE with a scangauge. I can't imagine trying to pull off high mileage in my insight without my instantaneous and trip FCD. You'll probably surprise yourself with how good your next tank will be. I've seen some people who jump around 10mpg with just a scangauge!

Oh and welcome!

You and I are in the same zone with similar vehicles (mini suv's, 5 speed). The things that have helped me is slowing down, coasting, fasing, driving w/o brakes, potential parking, head out parking, tire pressures. I just got my sgii, so I don't what that will do to help me. I will be interested in your mileage logs and your results.

You have done well so far.

Thanks 98CRV! We seem to be a small--small stick shift suv's-- elite group;).

Just got sgII today. Am on maiden 80 mile rt and it's showing 34.0 mpg so I think we can squeeze out a few mpg with these devices. Thanks for responding.

I'd love to know what kind of mpgs you get during acceleration. My brief experience has surprised my how low my mpgs are even in 4th and 5th gear while I am accelerating from a stop. Once I get going above 30 and the accelerating declines, the mpgs go up. The sgii has made it clear that this is the zone that I can work on that I could not address without the sgii. Even without it, I learned that slower highway speeds make a big difference.

CRV98,

I try to limit any abrupt acceleration. Acceleration in 2nd, 3rd & 4th can range from 10-20 mpG. To avoid any hard acceleration, I skip shift from 2nd or 3rd to 5th between 20-25 mph.

Not sure I have the sgII calibrated right yet (1st fill up), but it's reporting 35.3 for 90 miles on current fill up. If that turns out to be right, then using the sgII as a tool can yield 10-20% improvements. In a little over 20 fill ups, it will pay for itself as here in southern Oregon regular is around $3.20 now.

I never dreamed I could get 35 out of a vehicle with an epa of 22/28.
