A new week!!

Traffic was not nice to me this morning. Added to damp roads I didn't hit the number I wanted into the parking lot... On the plus side I now have a timer to attach my EBH to so that issue is taken care of. :)

39F (35F windchill), 6mph (head)wind from the SSE, overcast:

51.8mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work)The tank is up yet another tick to 51.5mpg over 705.6mi with 2.3g left and the guess gauge is indicating 1 needle width over 1/8th.

My drive home from work this morning was another *ding* moment. I experienced the same super high mileage that I did the other night when driving home from my parents. It definitely has to do with the engines torque curve in 5th gear.

My thought it, slower is not always better... It all depends on the road. Maintaining the speed limit on my commute home instead of trying to go 35 netted me an increase of around 25 mpg's....

Although it could be that I'm just getting better at this hypermiler thing :D

I'm not commuting today, but I can report that Saturday's trip North was uneventful. Unfortunately the FE was terrible. I'll be surprised if this thing nets anything over 50 given the conditions and the speeds. (Cruise at 68mph most of the time, and that still puts us squarely in the right lane being passed by everything in sight.) But hey, at least the emissions are clean

Sadly, the Prius "nobody over 6' exists" ergonomics are getting to me a bit. I'm going to have to make some kind of modification to this thing before the next long road trip (in what, a month? blah.) The bottom half of me is fine this time but my collar bone is screwed up from the seat being tilted farther back than it ought to be in order to accomodate my legs, so my arms are stretched too far away from my torso to reach the wheel. It's not that bad considering that it quits bothering me the second I get out of the car, but it's still not fun. It's a shame the airbag deploys from the side bolster because otherwise I'd throw in some Recaros up front and call it a day.

Ok, enough whining. Best wishes for a week of good FE and safe driving!

Lots to report today. Filled up Friday: 7.685 gal / 419 miles = 54.5 mpg.

Weekend trip:
55.4 mpg / 185 mi (home to Fort Worth, all by myself. P&G 55/60/65 mph the whole way. THAT was a lot of work!)
48.5 mpg / 93 mi (Ft Worth to north Dallas, with wife and kid, max AC, traffic... P&G)
43.8 / 148 mi (Dallas to home, full load, Cruise set at 65. compared to 55.4 mpg doing high-speed P&G? Wow!)
Overall: 49.3 / 426 miles
taking the Civic instead of the Odyssey saved 8.5 gallons and about $25.

This morning: 65.2 / 15.7 miles
brought the tank up to 49.7 mpg / 447 miles. We'll see how high I can drag this dog!

Morning morning! Took a trip over the weekend to the International Car Show in Orlando. Had 4 full-sized college kids (younger brother and his friends) + myself in the Mazda3. Passenger load was easily 900+ lbs. The 3 still managed to knock out 41-42 MPG when cruising at 57-58 MPH! :D Brought down the average from 43.1 to 41.9, but I'm impressed with the "umph" the little 2.0L has. :)

Nice work, Blake! That Insight is really starting to sing now! :D

Tim, if you find a solution for that seating issue let me know. My 6'5" frame would appreciate suggestions -- even for my Elantra!

Laurie, how do you keep doing that???

Andrew, you've left me behind again. ;) Great work!

John, what a great feeling that must be! Were they impressed?

Chuck, 95+mpg in November is INSANE!!!!!

Hypermiling with my mother on the phone is not easy. Wow. I was way low at most of my checkpoints on the way home. It was a bit foggy, but that shouldn't have hurt the mileage THAT much. Distraction. :(

43F (38F windchill), 8mph headwind from the WNW, overcast:

51.4mpg for 22.2mi (Work to home -- where did the extra 0.1mi come from??)The tank is still at 51.5mpg over 727.8mi with 1.9g left and the guess gauge is indicating right about 1/8th.

I'm sure I could get this tank over 800mi, but I don't know if I want to go for it. I guess I'll see how low the gauge is after work tomorrow and what the weather is supposed to be like... I'm probably already past the cheap price for gas anyway. :(

Today was not so good for FE or for me keeping records.:( I forgot to write down a segment but I think it was 5.2 miles long. Winds were out of the south at ~10 mph and the temp started at ~40F and got to 53F.
1. 71.0-5.8
2. 72.6-9.6
3. 75.0-9.6
4. 95.5-6.3
5. ????-5.2
6. 90.5-5.4
Average for today was 76.8 and the tank is at 74.4 after 42.8 miles.

ARRGGGGHHH!

Got some wonderful tint installed today, but I had to leave my car with the tint shop for a couple hours. No big deal right?

Well went to pick up my ride and my segment gauge that I had reset this morning from my commute from work to home was sitting at 87.6 for 27 miles or so (can't remember exactly) I had to do some errands today so I put more miles on than I normally do so early in the day.

Anyway, picked the car back up from the tinter and my segment gauge was sitting at 23 mpg!!!!

AND my SOC was sitting at 2 bars. When I gave it to the shop it was full.

There was only .2 of a mile extra on the odometer so they didn't drive it around but I can only imagine they let the thing idle or something and left the lights on in the car while they were tinting it..

ARRGGH! I'm hoping I can still pull out a PR tank this go around. I'm still going to beat my old one, but I want a 800 mile tank if it kills me. I think I'm going to run around with a 1 gallon gas can in my car when it gets close to empty :)

Larry, still very good for what you had to deal with!!

Laurie, I don't know about getting cheap gas now... I guess we'll see. Nice work with the ride home. :)

Blake... wow. Man -- I hope that doesn't hurt your tank too badly!!! :(

Keep pushing, Michael!

I had a good start this morning and made a run at my record. The lights weren't cooperating so I JUST missed it! :p

30F, no wind, clear:
55.6mpg for 22.3mi (Home to work -- so close!!)The tank remains at 51.5mpg over 750.3mi with 1.5g left and the guess gauge is showing 2 needle widths under 1/8th.

I dunno guys... Should I push for another 800+mi tank? If I do I should be around 817mi pulling up to the pump tomorrow after work.

64 degrees / 63.6 mpg - to work this morning
that drags the tank up to 50.3 / 477 miles. At least I've got 50, but it's almost empty. That weekend road trip KILLED my mileage.

In the meantime, I'm going to attempt to mod my hot air intake to envelope the cat converter with foil so the engine gets oven air after it warms up.

I MISS MY SCANGAUGE!! Latest fill at 31.849 :( Cold weather, worse than usual traffic, argh. Pulled my average DOWN again... oh this sucketh greatly... Need to pickup a inline hose / tank heater for TorqueNada, Murray's Auto Parts around here sells some. To do a freeze plug heater on this beast would be horrendous... I can't imagine how many hours it would take to remove all the stuff that is blocking access.

You people... all of you... are pulling some incredible numbers! :D

Everyone, WOW! Stepping up the game ahead of winter, or in spite of it? :D Laurie, touching what the Prius junkies (;)) are putting out in our nice city commutes with highway segments?? How I'd like to have some sort of lean burn. I think Marc said at one point, the Prius will give you 70 at 50, but not 55... maybe 60 at 60 if you're lucky. It's ALLLLMOST there but keeps it just out of reach.

84.3 / 7.0 miles / 43F / -1.5% nSOC into work this morning. Very above avg given temps. :D

The tank's at 74.9 / 578 miles / 2 pips.

Tomorrow I'm driving to see family in MN (Sean - Northfield, to answer your question from another thread, though I might make my way up towards the cities at some point during the weekend). Unfortunately it might turn out to be a repeat of 2005, where awful conditions (20-30 MPH headwinds, snow) contributed to my worst tank ever.

Forecast for La Crosse, WI for tomorrow (roughly the halfway point):
Cloudy skies with a few snow showers later in the day. High 38F. Winds NNW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 30%.

:( Well, I'll do what I can.

I'm tempted to go back and look at some the the posts around Thanksgiving last year. When I joined in December, I remember early winter numbers which seemed worse than what I read today. Could it be that everyone is now bringing their A game? :)

Tank is at 70.9 / 350 miles. Like the last tank, I'm finding myself on the highway for roughly half the time for various reasons. As such, keeping my head above 70 is the goal. So far so good, although the cold is fixing to head our way at long last. Highs in the 50s for a while. Yes, I promise not to complain about Texas winters.

Anyone familiar with Kim Adelman?

http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/11/19/8-000-for-an-at-home-plug-in-prius-conversion/

This popped up on my radar screen last night. I'm super sensitive to PHEV developments, and this seemed to be worthy of a mention.

8 miles @ $8k, with one day service at your home. Yeah, still a good chunk of change. And 8 miles ain't a PHEV-25 or PHEV-50. But with my 24 mile RT commute combined with probable access to an outlet at work, I know I could stretch that 8 to 12 with some EV & glide. The $8k sure sounds better than the $24-$36k at Hybrids Plus, or the $12k for fleets only at Hymotion.

$8k to eliminate commute gas...................so tempting...........

Hmm, I didn't start posting in the DG until about January, so I don't have direct comparisons w/o looking at my spreadsheet at home, but my tank closest to this time last year (10/22 to 11/23) was 58.1 MFD/55.6 calculated. Last year at this time I had my (first :D) SG for about a month and had just put in the EV button. 58.1 vs 74.9. I don't think I can extrapolate that out to future years (:D) but there has been a definite change in my "game" since last year. And everyone's, for that matter! (Hey Marc, remember when you were happy about breaking 90 for the first time on your commute, one way?)

Looking back at my Prius tanks for last year, I'm only down about 5-10 mpg's. I also discovered that there are tanks in the Prius that were lower than some of my tanks in the 'rolla. Of course, that was before I started officially hypermiling.

Today is looking good for an 80 mpg day.:) I'm at 79.7 and I have two more ~4.8 mile segments left. The first one is usually good for 90-100 and the second one is usually in the 80-85 range. The temp is 53F and the wind is <5mph.

Did you get it, Larry??

I had one heck of a day at work. Holy wow. Nonstop "OMG!!! FIX IT!!!" moments... and of course it all had to be topped off by a meeting that went long enough to delay me 30 minutes. Which of course dropped me right into the thick of rush hour traffic. :(

I was almost to the garage and some pick up came charging up the road just in time to prevent me from turning. :( I swung wide and tried to hairpin it further down (rolled over the corner of the opposite side of the road), but that was enough to just kill the momentum I needed to get up the hill. I lost 3/10ths trying to get it in. :ccry:

37F (31F windchill), 9mph (headwind) from the N, overcast:

50.4mpg for 22.2mi (Work to home -- there's that 0.1mi again??)The tank is still at 51.5mpg over 772.5mi with 1.0g left and the guess gauge is showing 3 needle widths over the E mark.

I didn't stop for gas but I shouldn't have any issues going back and forth to work on what I have (another 44.5mi or so). I'll fill up tomorrow after I get back. 800mi here I come!! ;)

Woot sean! Whats your record tank so far?

I've been trying to go easy today and save my record tank. I've been paying more attention to the RPM and gear selection I've been experiencing my super high FE moments. This will be alot easier when my scangauge gets here so I can see my TPS and engine load. Should help me narrow down some theories I have about my commute.

Average for today so far (I still have an 11 mile drive back home) is 82mpg for 26 miles. I'm sitting very close to 700 miles on this tank with my gas gauge showing roughly 1/4 a tank.

As a side note, I've managed to get my SOC back up to around 1/2 from the drained state yesterday. Man it took forever for it to jump from two bars to three :( I'll hopefully have it full by the time I get home.

Sean, I missed it by just a couple of ticks. I have a good reason though: I took one on the chin for the team by letting someone take a test drive tonight. He wants one now.;)
1. 76.1-5.8(home to wife's work)
2. 79.5-9.6(wife's work to my work)
3. 74.2-9.6(my work to wife's work)
4. 94.6-6.3(wife's work to home)
5. 88.6-4.9(home to voice lessons)
6. 53.2-1.1(voice teacher's husband went for a test drive)
7. 81.5-4.8(voice lessons to home)
Average for today was 79.8. I guess if I've helped to persuade another person to get a hybrid the day was worth it.

Blake, that's really too bad about your SOC. :( My record distance to date is 823.5mi on 16.4g. My record efficiency for a tank is in my signature. I figured out that if I could manage 61mpg on a tank that another fill of 16.4g should get me to the 1K mark. That will have to wait 'til spring. ;)

32 degrees, about a 15 mph headwind. one rude driver who kept his brights on while we were winding around this uphill section right at the beginning of the road i live on. i know he was doing it on purpose since he turned them off when an oncoming car approached, and then turned them back on. jerk. when he passed me, i "forgot" to turn mine off. he then turned right a half mile later. he really should consider that most people on that road are his neighbors and what goes around comes around.

66.9 for 82 miles today.

Squeaked out a 78.2 mpg for 11.2 miles on my commute home from the parents house. Pretty decent since I was under forced regen for the whole way home and I didn't want to FAS so I could get my pack back up to full charge. AHHHH finally back full :D

At least the average temps here are staying warm... I really need to get a HAI back on the Insight. I didn't like the way my old config was because of the routing it was making the HV cable rub an engine mount and looked like it was starting to cut into it. Guess I'll route it the "long" way.. not like it matters too much ;)

Thanks. I'm pretty amazed by the jump in mileage I must say. I'm also amazed how low the EPA rating is for this car. I've never gotten anywhere near 30 mpg. In fact, I've probably very rarely gone as low as 34 mpg which is its 'highway' rating. Plus, previous to changing my driving style, I was not so kind to this car. It got driven hard whenever I felt like it. So, I think the EPA rating is absurdly low, but I'm very happy to be getting high 40s!

JimboK

68 MPG on the ride in this morning, 44F. Tank's holding at 65 MPG with two pips left, not too bad for the middle of November. It'll take a hit tomorrow during a ~150 RT over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house for turkey. But m'lady's pretty tolerant of lower speeds on the back roads, and unseasonably warm temps are in the forecast, so keeping it north of 60 for the trip is doable.

And knowing I may not be online tomorrow, here's an advance "Happy Thanksgiving" to all!

Daox, if you put an SG on that Paseo and tweak your techniques properly that car should easily be worth ~60mpg if you are already pulling high 40s out of it. :) Your Matrix should also be worth numbers in that neighborhood so it sounds as though you have a couple of good cars in the stable!! :D

Laurie, you are really getting the hang of this "Can't intimidate me!!" attitude!! Great work. :woot:

Blake, I'm sure you are much relieved to have that SOC back up! With your new found cruising success now you can stomp all over your old averages! :flag:

Good luck, Jim!!!

Pictures, Chuck!! Pictures!!!! :Banane27:

Traffic was not as kind this morning as yesterday morning... plus I came into the lot a bit hot but didn't have quite enough momentum to make a loop around it. So I just ate it after trying to zig zag my way to my normal slot. :o

Oh well! I did see the low fuel light a couple of times on the way in but I've still got plenty of reserve. I've never run it dry but I estimate I've got another gallon past what the SG is set for (16g with actual around 17g). I think I may try a back route to the gas station by cruising past my house and taking some neighborhood streets the rest of the way. It will be slightly longer but could easily be worth it due to lowered traffic congestion. ;)

27F (19F windchill), 15mpg (tail)wind from the N, overcast:
53.3mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work)The tank is up another tick to 51.6mpg over 794.7mi with 0.6g left and the guess gauge indicates 1 needle width over the E mark.

below freezing here with 15MPH wind. i kind of thought it was colder since my autostop has stopped working. i changed up the last few miles of my commute to try and eliminate the uphill hit i was getting, so this way is a bit shorter but there is often a wait at the stop sign where i cross into the industrial park.

sean, wish i could say i got that much encouragement at home. i mentioned how i had improved my average almost 10MPG in the last year, and that lead to the DH mentioning he's getting about 37 with the civic. i mentioned he could improve that with higher tire inflation and slowing down a little. his commute is similar to mine in distance and some of the same roads, but he likes to drive 62 and doesn't want to hold up anyone behind him. he just doesn't care enough to slow down......sigh

anyhow, couldn't quite hold my 70 into the parking lot but did manage 69.6 ;)

Daox - Great work! I notice that you're using the new adjusted EPA estimate, though. The old numbers were 31 city / 37 hwy / 33 combined. Either way, you're blowing it out of the water!

Chuck - Pictures! :woot:

Sean - another 800 on its way! Great work.

-----------------

This morning - I got an early start, traffic was light, weather was perfect - 69F and no wind. I took the slightly longer path to work, and adopted my best "no intimidation" (a la Laurie) attitude, and it worked!
71.2 mpg / 15 miles That's a PR by 4.1 mpg! That's more than double the EPA combined 35! :woot::woot:
I took it all the way to work for the record, then went to the gas station.

in summary:
60.5 mpg - home last night
71.2 mpg - to work this morning
53.9 mpg / 0.7 mi - to gas station
Filled up for 52.9 / 505 miles
57.8 / 0.7 - gas station -> work

Yeah, that's 4.1 over my best on ANY trip previously. And the SG was reading low this time. It said 51.0. Probably because it's adjusted to my daily commute, and this tank was mostly highway.

I'll say it now: soon, this car will have an average higher than a certain Accord... ;) That's my next goal.

Last night I had to run some errands which took me way out of my way. That wasn't the bad part since it was going to be a nice highway trip. Unfortunately, traffic was not cooperative. There was a major accident, which stopped traffic for miles. Luckily, I was able to take some back roads. The bad part was the route was not very straight. Right here, left there, etc. Needless to say, my mileage was hurting. I also didn't know any of the lights, but I finally got to my destination with a 39.2 MPG over 11 miles or so. It was hard fought too.

As I was heading home, in the thick of rush hour, I decided not to get back on the highway, but to take the straightest route home. It included some back roads, but they are highly traveled, especially at rush hour. The good part was that it was downhill almost the entire way! I drove like I have never driven before, with a few "hurry up and stop" moments so as not to get rear-ended. The result was ...
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l23/Skwyre7/Mileage/Errand_20Nov07.jpg

It was actually 48.5 MPG, but I couldn't snap the picture quickly enough. It was up to 49.1 MPG at one point. I was hoping to keep it up there, but the lights near home didn't cooperate. I did see JimboK sitting at a light waiting to turn left. I waved, but I don't know if he saw me.

Today I'm in the Prius (no work for me! :D). Oil change, tire rotation, and other errands. So far my trip to get the oil changed was about 56 MPG from a cold start.

Have a good holiday everyone. Drive safely, if you're driving.

Well Wayne, I unpassed you back darn it... 145% you vs 144% me over EPA... but :D
Because as you say, its a serious goal and worth it... a little step back sure but what a huge step from 7 months ago!

Nope I don't have the SG back yet ..
The rest of today's results in the Guzzler:
Home->Decatur: new PR: 21.84 mpg for 182.6 miles, in the sometimes heavy rain with a tail wind.
Decatur->Home: 17.04 mpg in sometimes heavy rain with a head wind.
Round trip: close to a PR I believe: 19.11 mpg for 369.5 miles :D I'm pretty happy with this result for a full size conversion van! Speeds were pretty much 55-60, hanging close to 55 on the way back, sometimes below. No problems with tailgaters or idiots!! :)

I think I had one of my worst FE days since owning the car.:( The temp started out at ~50F and dropped all day to 40F. In the afternoon, I had a moderate rain and ~15 mph winds added to the mix.:(
1. 70.9-5.8(home to wife's work)
2. 81.2-9.6(wife's work to my work)
3. 38.9-1.2(my work to my mom's)
4. 67.9-8.9(mom's to wife's work)
5. 65.6-7.7(wife's work to grocery store)
6. 59.1-12.2(grocery store to mom's)
7. 86.7-5.1(mom's to home)
Average for today was 67.8 and the tank is at 71.3 after 155.7 miles.

Any 12 mile trip in the 50s for Larry must have involved a combination of the Boston blizzard of '78, riotous Notre Dame / Purdue / Hoosier post game crowds, and a pack of wild dogs migrating south from Michigan. :)

I have developed a sick aversion to anything below 60 RT. Even on the highway, when 60s simply are not to be had, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. :) Maybe not fair, but probably understandable.

Am I a bit obsessed? There may soon be construction on my commute which would (1) eliminate a light, and (2) replace my one stop sign with a light. Each would potentially remove a pulse. (1) has already begun. (2) arguably is justifiable, but has not happened. I pondered dropping by City Hall to inquire about it!

I need my 100RT, doggone it! :)

Tank at 71.1 / 480 miles. 50 HW / 50 City. 82F today. What the heck is going on? Tomorrow is Tgiving! Cold front on its way.

Happy Holidays everyone.

Marc, even with the TPMS warning on(tires aren't flat;)), it felt like I was driving through Jello. There were three of us in the car and I kept having to cycle the defrost off and on because I couldn't open the windows far enough on account of the rain. I know that things will likely get worse when the actual cold weather gets here but, as you mentioned, sub-60 tastes really bad.:(

EDIT: My son just asked me if I would take him and his friends to BestBuy so it looks like I have a chance to redeem myself. It would be difficult for the FE to get worse. Wouldn't it?;)

Ken, do you have a built in AFCD for the Guzzler? I thought sure you had the SG back when you started posting trip mileages... But soon, right? Congrats on pulling that sucker up to snuff!!!

Wayne, this cold stuff is starting to get tough to handle -- but we can always count on you pull out the stops!! :D
I'm sorry, Larry. :( I know how you feel! You are still way over EPA though! :Banane26:

Marc, I'm the same way (except without the stratospheric numbers!!) about numbers below 50mpg now. Blech!!!

Guys, this was an interesting one. I drove home through some of the worst traffic I've seen in quite some time, then took a back route to the gas station for two reasons. First, I wanted to avoid the rest of the city traffic. Second, I was selfishly trying to up the total mileage a little. ;) I didn't exceed my best distance, but I did find that the SG was indeed reporting low!! :D

30F (21F windchill), 10mph (head)wind from the N, light snow:
50.2mpg for 24.7mi (Work to Costco)
40.3mpg for 1.8mi (Costco to home -- not a PR but nice!)The tank finished up with 51.5mpg over 819.3mi using 15.9g of fuel. Except it wasn't 15.9g but 15.349g instead... yielding...

A new PR of 53.378!!!!
:driveby1:
How's THAT for a late November tank??? Best ever! :D :woot:

Sorry, Andrew -- I guess you didn't quite catch me after all. ;)

I haven't adjusted the SG just yet as this is the first full tank with the new device, but I'm pretty sure it needs a bit of tweaking to reduce the reported fuel use. I'll let it go through another tank or two before touching it -- I like surprises!! ;)

Now I have to prepare myself for the really bad stuff I'll have to face to and from Church tonight...

Grats on the PR sean!! At the begining of cold weather too! :woot:

Today was an average day for me. Mid 80 average (I reset the Segment gauge a couple times so no average for the day). Weather is still warm here in NC with a daytime high of 70 I think. The nights and mornings are getting cold though and while I'm still on my 4 day break, I'm dreading driving to work on the day after turkeyday.

I'm sitting at 714.5 miles on my trip odometer so I've already beat my PR tank for distance... Lets see if I can keep it up and pull out a 800 mile tank :D I've got right under 1/4 of a tank on the gas gauge so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Bar anything drastic I should hit it.

On a side note, my scangauge came in the mail today. This thing looks pretty fun! I'm still trying to figure out how to work everything and hopefully I'll have everything figured out before this tank ends.

what he didn't mention is what was going on weather wise up here. i stopped at the barn briefly, but was too chilled to ride. i headed home my usual route into a 27 degree headwind with snow flurries. talk about depressing, sure looks like fall is over.

i picked up a small portable compressor today at target so i am not at the mercy of my DH or a lousy gas station air dispenser. i can check my own tires and put them where i want (i know hubby would yell if he knew how high i am running my tires). it was only $25 and fits in a corner of the trunk.

oh, yea. 62MPG for today's 102 miles......

Ok, now I think I'm done driving. I was in city traffic for ~1/2 of the trip.
8. 68.4-16.1(home to BestBuy)
9. 10.8-.1(BestBuy to Wendy's)
10. 67.2-16.1(Wendy's to home)
I dropped down to 67.4 for the day but I guess I shouldn't complain since the temperature dropped to 38F and there was a 15 mph wind from the NE which was basically a 45* head/side wind for the majority of the trip home and I was on a relatively un-rehearsed route through the city because of construction.

Sean, you are starting to get scary! Nice work!

Laurie, I think we just got our first taste of the rest of winter.

Larry, just wait 'til it warms up again. :Banane18: ;)

I didn't have an easy time of it with my RT for Choir practice. Snow, wind, wet and snowy roads... :p I fought it though.

28F (20F windchill), 9mph wind from the NNW, snowy:
47.4mpg for 16.9mi (Home to Church with a 14mph tailwind)
50.0mpg for 16.9mi (Church to home with a 9mph headwind :()The tank is currently at 48.1mpg over 35.8mi with 15.3g left.

I'm hoping that since my Church route is the most sensitive to weather conditions I can still keep things up reasonably with slush on the road?? Well, I'm about to find out "weather" or not I want to.

Wow. What a difference a day makes. The temp is 33F and I had to make one of those "honey we forgot something at the store" runs. The wind was out of the north at ~10 mph which, for the majority of my trip, was 90* from the side. The trip was 9.1 miles each way and the traffic was surprisingly light.;) I had 83.7 on the way there and 92.3 for the trip back for 87.6 for the day. The tank is at 70.7 after 188.1 miles.

Chuck
11-22-2007, 10:29 AM
Nice!! Gah! Look at that SoC... ;)I was doing pretty good on the SoC until I was about three miles from work and realized this might be the last best chance to break 100mpg in 2007. This is the point where I have a steep 100-foot climb on the world's biggest mixmaster - The High Five on US75 and I635....that did most of the battery draining...I did more FASing which denies me the chance to regen the pack back up.

A few months back, I broke 100, but had SoC was less than 1/4 - not a truly sustainable 100mpg commute (i.e. heavy regen on the return trip)

Study the two pictures...mine has a dead give away that MIMA is installed. No, it's not I have a lower SoC - what is it?

Blake
11-22-2007, 11:26 AM
Your power steering and battery lights are not on ;)

One day and a week til my MIMA will be on its way... can't wait :D

Chuck
11-22-2007, 11:33 AM
Yes, the no battery light was a dead giveaway.

When the FAS switch is engaged on MIMA, electrical power is on (so stuff like the NAV stays on :) ), but the oil light comes on - indicating the ICE is idel.

You can also tell my picture was just before dawn at 6:30am because you can't see the print on my dash. ;)

Blake
11-22-2007, 11:35 AM
So your power steering is disconnected or does MIMA take off that light as well? I don't FAS all that much right now... that segment had two FAS's in it.. both less than 1/4 mile, but I'm concerned that with MIMA and I start FASing more the PS will eat up my battery.

I can pull out mid 120's easily on the way to my parents but my SoC takes a huge hit because of the FASing. The trip home the other day when I hit higher than I normally do by like 40% I think something was going on with my iFCD. Its been acting a bit weird lately...

Chuck
11-22-2007, 11:45 AM
Remember, Insight power steering is electrical. :)

On a MIMA FAS, you HAVE power steering.

Blake
11-22-2007, 11:56 AM
That is my concern... I don't want the power steering to drain my battery down. Has that been an issue for you?

Chuck
11-22-2007, 12:08 PM
That is my concern... I don't want the power steering to drain my battery down. Has that been an issue for you?No, but remember that power steering is 12 volt-powered. In fact, we probably should call the hybrid battery pack like Toyota - the traction battery...all it does is propel the car - period. If you look at Mike's detailed picture of the supporting computers supporting the traction battery, they all get their power from your 12 volt battery.

If you have a l-o-n-g FAS, you could have a problem - I mean way beyond two minutes. Last summer (pre MIMA) I did a FAS down Pikes Peak - 18.5 miles over 45 minutes and ran the battery down...the dashboard looked like NORAD a few miles away on DEFCON 1.:eek::eek: When you install MIMA, it will probably look kind of like that, but don't worry...everytime the 12 volt is disconnected, the IMA system forgets the SoC so it does a forced recall to determine the SoC.

Randall (highwater) occasionally does an overnight charge on his 12 volt - it's a good idea for non-hybrid drivers, too.

Blake
11-22-2007, 01:21 PM
True the PS runs off the 12 volt, as well as the lights and climate control fans... But since we don't have an alternator the 12 volt get recharged by the Traction battery ;)

Since the DC/DC converter has losses in it theres the problem. I want to make the electrical system as efficent as possible. I guess I could install a small solar panel in the car to charge up the 12 volt while driving down the road but I wonder how much steering resistance the insight has with no power assist (Possibly remove the fuse?)

Anyway, I've hyjacked this thread long enough ;) (I'm bad for that btw... if it gets out of hand let me know :) some of the other forums I'm a member of I've earned the nickname king of spam... my avatar is a can of spam heh)

Back on topic... Checked my pressures and they are holding steady at 60 PSI. I had them jacked up to 70 for a day or two but lowered them back down. I was going to raise them back up to 65ish when I got to my parents after I checked their tire pressure....

To my supprise my dad was checking all the tire pressures in their cars when I pulled up. Ahhhh I'm rubbing off on them :D

shifty35
11-22-2007, 01:39 PM
A well built DC/DC converter has > 90% efficiency in most use cases, it will be hard to improve upon there. I really like the idea of solars to keep the 12v topped off and reduce the need for DC/DC charging.

Per the Electrical Troubleshooting manual, the wire for the Oil Pressure switch comes into the guage cluster through connector C408, which is in the center console. It is the Yellow / Red wire, and to turn the light off during a FAS is as easy as opening that wire, as it is grounded at low pressure. It's really an idiot light, and the sensor isn't used for anything else other than that light.

Something similar could be done to disable EPS during a FAS if desired... kill the motor relay or something.

On topic, I filled up yesterday because I noticed gas had dropped locally to $2.95... figured I'd fill before it jumped up again for the holidays.

I fill just about every 2 weeks, last tank was 65 mpg.

Blake
11-22-2007, 01:47 PM
Shifty have you started a Mileage log yet? If not I'd highly suggest it... Makes it much easier to track your FE and there is a section for note where you can document any changes you've done. Cool stuff indeed :)

As for killing PS during a FAS thats probably the best of both worlds... Keeping it while the hybrid motor can recharge the traction battery and when its off... kill it. I'll take this discussion to the honda section ;)

winter is here. the temp was 15 degrees, and i can see that the mississippi is starting to freeze over in spots.

the good thing is.....nobody else seems to be working today. i did not have another car on the road with me until i was 5 miles from the office, and she needed to pass as the speed limit changed to 40. apparently my 40 wasn't going to be fast enough for her.

oh well. it was hard work today, but at least i could go slow without hassle from behind. as i turned into the industrial park, i noticed something in the lot at the cabinet shop just down the road.........an INSIGHT, silver with the stripes on the side, kind of like billy's. wish i had a cleanmpg card to leave on the windshield. perhaps i will just leave a note about us.....

Laurie, I thought mpg was supposed to go down when winter gets here. It seems as though your car has forgotten that.;) Good work!

I decided to ignore Old Man Winter today myself.:D My son called me and said he had forgotten his lunch and wanted to know if I'd bring it to him. The temp was 31F and the wind was from the NW at 5-10 mph. The return trip was basically all a northernly route with 1 mile of it due west. The trip there was 79.5 for 12.5 miles and the trip home was 102 for 12.4 miles. The average for the day was 89.5 and the tank is at 72.1 after 213.2 miles with 9 pips showing. I should also note that I started from home at 4 bars of SoC, and raised it to 6 bars by the time I got there. When I left to come home, the SoC dropped to 5 bars but I had it back to 6 bars before I was half way home.

The method I used is one that I have been working on for awhile and trying to refine it. I accelerate to a max of 30-35 mph but I keep an eye on my trip ave. and choose a minimum to let it drop to. My minimum speed is usually ~20 mph unless of course I'm coming to a stop sign in which case it drops much lower than 20 mph.;) If I reach the minimum before 30 mph, I let off and glide. If I start reaching 30 mph before my minimum trip mpg, I raise the minimum mpg level and continue. I'ts just my way of letting Old Man Winter know what he can do with those low temps.:D

Sean, the Guzzler is a 1992 Ford E150 conversion van, pre-OBDII connector, so it never has had ScanGauge. The trip segments for the Decatur run come from filling up before leaving home, filling at Decatur, then filling just before home. I get to do the trip again Sunday, going to encourage my daughter to sleep on the way so I might try some NICE-on coasting, perhaps a bit of FASing. All I've ever done so far in the Guzzler has been DWL, DWB, ridge riding, a fair amount of distant windbreak following, and a little close windbreak following (it doesn't bother me much, but bothers the passengers, and being a full size van which sits pretty high, it is unlikely to get road debris to the windshield or submarine under the trailer... but I still don't want to find out for sure, I'd rather hang back a bit, besides I haven't seen a semi doing under 60mph for the last 3 Decatur trips...

Hi Chuck:

___I knew you would get the hang of those 100’s eventually ;)

___Jerad, all highway, terrible conditions and in a Prius? You should be proud of what you achieved!

___Blake, definitely get that WAI installed and the radiator completely blocked if you have not already. If you need the part numbers, let me know as I still have them listed in some ancient post around here somewhere.

___Laurie, I think you are ready to take on all comers now. Winter cold w/ snow treads and still pulling 60’s is absolutely excellent!

___Larry, nice job in the frozen temps!

___Ken, you have got to get rid of those FSP’s in your stable one of these days ;) The fuel costs are costing more than a more fuel efficient car would to begin with!

___Took my son to the movies in the Ranger 1.1 miles away. 29 degree temps and a lousy 37.8 to, 32 back for a 34.0 RT. I could barely glide out of my drive let alone down the street like normal  Winter is definitely here :ccry:

___Good Luck

___Wayne

Thanks for the encouragement, this cold weather highway stuff is torture. Another highway RT of decent length today. Winds out of the SSW at 10-15, so a tail/crosswind on the way out and a head/crosswind on the way back. My SG TFE is consistently high by 2-3% on these longer trips, I'll give it an adjustment once the weekend is over.

57.1 / 33.3 miles / 36F
52.2 / 33.0 miles / 36F

54.5 / 66.3 miles for the day.

The tank's at 53.6 / 271 miles / 5 pips.

Last year's Thanksgiving and associated trips landed a tank at 54.6 (avtemps 45, no strong winds of note) - at least I'm going to try to beat that.

thanks, wayne. and i really should check the tires, since i know they are probably down since you and sean upped them last month. that might improve my "miserable" effort on the way home from the barn tonight....

30 degrees - i got autostop back at that temp. barely any wind, and light snow flurries.

it had dropped to 58.6 on the way to the barn after work, and as i started home. with some careful driving, i ended up with 62MPG for the day.........

:bananajump:Went to eat breakfest with the guys when we got off shift this morning. Some nasty hills which brought my morning average down.

Left there and went to help my parents pick up a christmas tree... What a trip! through Apex by taking this route there are 6 stop lights I usually always get caught at. I managed to time them all but one :D

The one I missed is at the top of a hill so not that big a deal. Anyway, what made it great was there was this guy in a Volvo S60 behind me. I was admiring his car, since it is a nice ride, but then I noticed he was yelling and pointing his finger at me. I managed to make out a couple four letter words coming from his mouth...

As the light turned green he whips across the double yellow lines and gives me the one finger salute out his driver window, rapidly accelerating well past the posted speed limit of 35mph... around a bend to where two Apex police officers were parked running radar. :D

I was laughing my head off as they pulled him over when I noticed it was two of my friends that are Apex cops. One of them just called me and said that they saw the whole thing. They gave him an aggressive driving ticket (ROTFL)

Heading back to the parents house was one of those moments again! I was actually playing around with the scangauge and trying to find the optimal TPS point for driving there. I was switching between 16 and 17 and found that 17 would give me around 100 MPG and quite easily maintain 50mph. 16 would net me a bit higher FE ~120 but keeping the speed above 40 was difficult. Intresting. More testing is needed :)

87mpg for 23.6 miles for this morning. Outside temps mid 40's (still no HAI :( ) Coolant temps are still holding steady at 198 despite the much colder temps... hmmmmmm

Blake, it sure is nice when the idiots play right into a situation and all you have to do is watch :)
Cold here, I know the few shorts trips yesterday and today are going to hurt. No SG has made it back yet, I think I might need to call next week to be sure they even got them, they were sent by Priority Mail, insured.
I hope to replace one of the FSP vehicles perhaps in January, expecting a pretty big tax refund...

Ken, I've heard that others are having challenges with getting their SG's back as well. I also like seeing people hose themselves. Unfortunately, it's not nearly often enough.:(

I'm not sure if I'm done driving yet but here's what I got so far. Winds from the SW at 5-10 mph and the temp was 30F. I went to the bank(7.0 miles each way) and got 74.6 there and 106 back for an average of 87.6 for the day and the tank is up to72.7 after 227.4 miles.

i had to run an errand to day that involved needing the truck. actually, i was visiting a friend who has cancer, and can't care for her chickens right now. since i was the one who gave them to her in the first place, i told her i would take them home with me until she's feeling better. i didn't think i could fit the dog crate into my honda.....

i did my best hypermiling techniques with the truck, a small engine chevy silverado, regular cab, short box...i went up hill under load, coasted down, drove 45. it would have been interesting to see what i got for FE, but didn't stop for gas since i think it would probably only taken 3 gallons since it was almost full when i left. i miss my readouts.

considering how stiff the wind was, and 35 degrees, i am kinda glad i didn't drive mine, it would have been ugly.

one thing i discovered, it's not nearly so intimidating to drive 55 on the 4 lane in a truck than a small car.

I thought I was done driving but I had to offer to go on a pizza run. It was either me in my Prius or my son's speed-demon friend in a '94 T-Bird. It was a pretty easy choice for me from an emissions standpoint.;)

The trip was 4.3 miles each way and I got 73.3 there and 95.6 on the way back. This brought my average for the day down to 85.8 but it was worth it.

I've got three hash marks left on the gas gauge... any guesses on how much further I can go on this tank? 900 maybe? I think that might be a stretch but if I can blow my PR out of the water by 200 miles it will make my day... no... week... no... Month!

I've run some errands today that were spaced long enough to always have a cold ICE. :( I didn't look at each trip, but my tank is at 49 MPG since fill-up last night. Temps have been in the low to mid 40's.

Stayed at 57mph in semi from Green Bay to Manteno/Chicago and back. Except when tooling around Chicago area- for instance- 15 mph max on TriState north from Eisenhower to O'Hare spur, that section took over an hour to complete at 11 am. Reloaded in time to hit the bottom of the loop at 3:10 pm. More 2-25mph driving until the Kennedy-Edens split. How do you Chicagoan's do it? Anyway- UPS semis running about 65 mph, FedEx about 62 mph, couple of LTL's down to 50mph, most semis still in hammer down mode. My trip back to Green Bay was somewhat encouraging- I didn't notice too many vehicles running up hard on my rear, and at 57 mph I passed 2 semis, 2 expedite delivery vans, a contractor truck and a car all in 65 mph zones. More than I've seen before. Sorry- the mechanics plugged the wrong tank so I couldn't refill my truck to check fuel mileage.

Last night I got in the Highlander for the first time since Sunday. My wife averaged 21.2 mpg according to Scangauge. She's still not hooked yet. My trip avg was 28.3 on 45 miles mixed driving. Best results seem to come by keeping TPS at 21, speed at 58 mph, but I still have LOTS of experimenting/learning to do.

I've gone 800 miles only three times.

Brrrrrrr.... Its starting to get "cold" here in NC. Lows last night of 30. Left the house this morning and the elcheapo temp gauge I have inside my house was reading 40 outside.

Recently purchased a programable outlet switcher so I can plug in my EBH when I get home and it only runs it from 2:30 to 6:30 (although I'm usually way gone by 6:30)

The roads were damp and for some reason the car was not liking me this morning. I think I'm psyching myself out by trying too hard for max distance.

I averaged 69.7 mpg :( for the 4.1 mile drive to work. Pulled out a nice FAS at the end and managed to time a traffic light which let me continue my FAS into the station parking lot for probably 1/2 mile of distance. Actually I think thats the first time I've pulled that off. Imagine what it would have been without the FAS

Got 65.4mpg over 105miles for my trip to and from work yesterday. Temps in the morning were 22F and were 30F in the evening on the way home. Both legs were driven at night. My winter FE drop is mostly due to burning fuel to warm up a cold engine and because I'm doing more night driving (driving with the headlights on costs me 3 to 4mpg). In light traffic , I've also dropped my cruising speed from 60-65mph to 55-60mph to compensate for the colder, thicker air. But in heavier traffic, where I can take advantage of the traffic drafts I'm still doing my usual 60-70mph.

More highway segments, marginally better than Friday's.

57.9 / 30.3 miles / 36F

I think I did pretty good today despite the less than optimal conditions. When I left for Church the temp was 24F and the winds were from the south(headwind) at 5-10 mph and I had 69.0 into the lot 5.2 miles later. On the return trip ~2.5 hours later, the winds were still there(tailwind) and the temperature had skyrocketed to 31F:rolleyes: and I managed 80.7 into my garage. This gave me 74.3 for the day and the tank is at 72.8 after 246.8 miles.

Excellent work, Keith! We need more like you. :)

Blake, damp roads can have more of an effect than you might think...

Basjoos, I still think your numbers are just way amazing.

Jerad, steady progress is all we can hope for, right? :)

Larry, I would sure love to see your numbers in my Elantra! I'm still fighting to keep it all above 50mpg -- and not doing so well at the moment. :p

36F down and 45F back (27F and 38F windchills), 13mph headwind down and 15mph tailwind back from the SSW, clear and sunny:

48.5mpg for 16.8mi (Home to Church)
34.4mpg for 1.7mi (Church to Bakers' Square -- Blech!!! :()
51.2mpg for 17.6mi (Bakers' Square to home -- silly lights and rough traffic)

This brings the tank up to 48.4mpg over 72.0mi with 14.5g left.

I've got some work to do on this tank!!!

surprisingly warm for this time of the year, in the low 30s. fought a tough headwind on the way to the barn. rode the horse for an hour, and had a pigout lunch with my sister.......by the time i headed home, the wind had settled a little and was more from behind. but i ran with lights on and i think that affects it.

68.5 for 43.6 to the barn
66.9 for the trip home, 88.9 miles for the day.

The reason I asked about the "pigout" is because I was assuming barbeque. At least thats what we southerns call pulled pork AND its not real barbeque unless it has vinegar based sauce.... not that poser northerner "barbeque" with ketcup based sauce :D

Oh no, pigout means the same here, I guess my reading comprehension is lacking atm. As for the cheesecake question.... Eat some of all of them of course!

check out these 33! Varieties (http://www.cheesecakefactory.com/menu_Display.asp?pg=2) :D

And for a post thats actually on topic. I've been semi keeping track of our trucks FE at the station. Compairing the other two shifts, when I drive I use on average 10% less fuel per hour run time.... not to mention my hours are MUCH lower than theirs... mainly because I don't let the truck sit and idle. Go Go hypermiling fire trucks :ctongue:

When my wife and I were still dating, we went to her dad's county employee's picnic. They had 4 different varieties of blueberry cheesecake so I did the only logical thing; I tried one of each and had a second piece of my favorite one.:p The FE on the way home suffered accordingly.:D

Back in Madison as of about an hour ago (yes, I have nothing better to do than post here :p). The wind is clearly out to get me - it managed to shift all the way around to the south and get stronger for my net-southeast trip.

I was watching my TFE gauge (trip FE as part of the main 4 gauges, courtesy of the new SG firmware) and there was an initial segment that was almost directly into the wind, and the TFE didn't get above 50 no matter what I did. :( It was about 10 miles after I turned east that I finally broke 50.

53.9 / 109.4 miles / 39 to 45F to finish off the tank - mostly south, some east and a decent elevation drop near the mississippi

The tank also finished at 53.9 and just 440 miles.

58.5 / 151.7 miles / 36 to 41F for the second leg, mostly east... a net elevation gain but also some nice long downhill glides. At least 2 instances of being followed at <20 feet by a big truck for several miles as I was doing the speed limit, with a COMPLETELY CLEAR passing lane. Nice. I'll do the speed limit if I've accumulated some followers, but I will not be intimidated into speeding. Also at least one case of having "cover" - my hats off to whoever it was that was following at a 5-6s distance at just under the speed limit for those 30 miles or so - keeping the tailgaters off me for a bit. :D

56.5 / 260.9 miles for the whole trip, with an overall average speed of 47MPH (includes reduced speed for a dozen towns and a few larger metropolitan areas - rochester & la crosse). Not too bad. And nowhere for the tank to go now but up. :D

Other relevant highlights... informing family of the Great Race and talked about driving habits, maybe opened a few eyes ("110MPG in a Prius? Was it modified?" "No, it's all driving habits" "Huh... like what?" ;):D).

I have entered my week of sins into the log for all to see. All-in we did about 2100mi of pure highway driving in a wide range of conditions. The vast majority of the time was spent with the cruise set to 65mph+ (the PSL plus 2 or 3...just enough to flow smoothly with the right lane and make the miles pass at a reasonable pace.) I did DWB to the best of my abilities through patches of traffic but we were blessed with much less of that than I expected. The results are about what you would expect for a Prius pushing 70mph in temps between 19F and 54F...48.7mpg round-trip. Cost a hair under $130 with fuel prices hovering around $3.00.

I think most of you guys would be rolling on the floor in pain after getting that kind of FE for that distance, but I got what I expected. Toyota gets my respect for building a car that pushes 50mpg even when all you do is point the thing down-range and light the fire. Whoever is responsible for driver ergonomics still deserves a swift kick in the @$$ but I'll get that resolved before I make this trip again. Oh, that's right. I have until Christmas. :( I'll just think of it as second chance to knock off a few MPH and hit the 51mpg mark. ;)
