On my recent trip driving from Dallas to the Fort Collins Marathon, I stopped at some very cutting-edge rest areas (and some that were crying for help). One of the things was some of them had waterless urinals. A simple filter replaces the plumbing and need for a water connection, yet allows the clean disposal. I noticed on the PHX trip that rest stops where a bit more high tech and receptive to the travler.

I've noticed a lot of rest stops in lots of areas nationwide that have waterless urinals and/or:
solar HW
solar electricity
geothermal heat/cooling
eco-sensitive architecture (ie built-in to hillside)

seems to be an easy way for states to get some 'green' PR or at least press releases, and they don't want to have to deal with full-on utilities for an out-of-the-way spot. Green-conscious design makes a ton of sense for this application.

Browse to the bottom of this page (http://www.dot.state.tx.us/mnt/sra/goal.htm). This was one of the rest areas. It had local vegetation that can thrive on the reused and rain water.
