I want to know what I can do to get better MPG. I am getting around 23 MPG overall combined. I have the automatic CVT transmission. I do not haul much in it. It is emty most of the time I use it to go to and from work. I live about three miles from work. I know what you must be thinking why not ride a bike? Well it is two miles of highway,so...
I have a bad habit of driving with quick starts and so on. I am trying to work on that.

With your short drive. You never even get it up to running temp. That hurts you more than a heavy foot. The quick starts are next in hurting you.
Best thing you can do is get the tire psi up and get a block heater. OOOO and change your oil often. Seeing that it sounds like its rare for you to ever get the engine truly hot. Im sure your oil gets very acidic very fast. With the CVT tranny your pretty much screwed on that short trip.....
Have fun

Well, I do go and get some coffee in the morning, but that is like only another 2-3 miles. I change my oil every 3000 miles use synthetic blend. My off days I get it up to temp, just when I go to work.

Hey CaliberMan71....Just registered here. Thanks for the website. We should be able to learn eco driving together. Your 3 mile commute would be nice for an occasional (more often?) bicyle ride. I got an electric bike & hope I can get more range out of it. With my clean northwest electric energy, I am putting out less than 1/700th the pollution of an ICE car. The bike is fun.

Be happy with your three mile commute! You might not have a great MPG number to brag about here but look at the much MORE IMPORTANT NUMBER how few gallons of gas a week you are using! I'm sure it's much lower than the people around here with the highest MPG stats.
Hi Lurch:
___I usually do not go anywhere but do try and make it to the local meets and events if that helps? I did drive a RT segment of 9 miles in the Ranger P/U to pick up some prescriptions for my son and pulled a 47.0 mpg for the RT in heavy traffic today? It doesn’t matter if you go 3 or 300 miles, read, learn, practice, re-read and you will see as well as make a difference.
___Good Luck

A friend of mine has the same car - she does about 80% short trips and is definately not a hyper miler - over the last 3,000 miles she has averaged 25-26 MPG.
I took it for a 100 mile drive the other day set cruise at 54 MPH - got a little over 37 MPG.

I don't mean to insult anyone I'm just trying to point out that he has already done the best thing he can to lower his gas usage and that is to live close to where he works.

Feather footing the Caliber CVT can get OK MPG. I've gotten as high as 35.6 MPG & have a yearly overall average of 31.4 MPG. But so many Calilber drivers have low MPG. If the CVT is pushed hard, the internal hydraulic pressures approach 1000 psi. Not only do MPG nosedive because of leadfooting, but those pressures, supplied by the engine also add to dropping MPG.
