A new week begins. This one is shaping up to be a rough one on my end, but at least I have 69.0mpg on a fresh tank to start it off.

Lousy mileage figures to report for this morning's short ride from my fiancee's: 61 MPG, 48F. Bad luck with traffic. For some reason the block heater didn't preheat again. Maybe the extension cord came unplugged. Hopefully that's all.

My commute to/from "home" officially changes this week. As of last Friday, I'm now a homeowner again. :woot: The commute is slightly longer to the full time job, but with several good route options to experiment with. The ride to the part time site(s) is considerably shorter.

Looks good to me, Tim!

Congratulations, Jim! :woot:

I think I got hit by the half hour traffic surge this morning because there were quite a lot of cars on the road for the time?

I'm noticing the cold... It didn't seem to affect my glides too much but man did it make my pulses hungry!!

39F, 5mph wind from the West, clear:

52.5mpg for 22.2mi (Home to work -- what happened to 0.3mi?)

The tank remains at 49.3mpg over 693.5mi with 2.0g left and the guess gauge shows 1 needle width over 1/8.

Still over 50mpg! :D

I'll probably fill up this afternoon, then again after work on Friday so I can get down to Milwaukee and back (hopefully!) on one tank again. I'm going to feel silly filling with less than 200mi on the tank -- that won't even be off the F mark! ;)

i feel like the same old, same old......backroads in, where i can usually do 45-50MPH...

got to work with 62.4, after seeing 63 for a while. there's a short uphill that gets me every time.

i'm going to set up to get a block heater next weekend. so far we haven't been below freezing, but it has to be out there waiting for us pretty soon.

Today I'm full of hot air - literally. :D

Disconnected the air intake and connected one that draws air off the catalytic converter. I'd just mailed in my ScanGage for an software upgrade, so I don't know how much hotter the air coming in is.

Anyway, fall hit Dallas this morning with a drizzle most of the way, yet got 92.1mpg at 55F - possibly my coldest run and still go over 90mpg.

More excellent numbers, Laurie!! :D You'll like the block heater -- it does make a tremendous difference. Have you got a grill block in yet? That helps quite a bit, too.

Nice work, Chuck!!!

You too, Andrew! :woot:

41.6 MPG this morning at 52ºF. I left a couple minutes late, but I think everyone else did too. Traffic wasn't any worse than normal. I really need to get some kind of grill block in place.

44.1/32.4 mi
46.8/32.8 mi -had to make a quick alt route .
roll over avg 45.4/65.2 mi
tank overall 44.1/82.1 (82.2 odo)

The day started out good and got even better by the end of the day. Temp started at 58F this morning, got up to 69F, and my last segment the temp was back to 58F and a light rain. Winds were from the south in the morning but switched to the north after noon.
1. 76.0-5.8
2. 85.7-9.6
3. 83.9-9.6
4. 104-6.3
5. 92.1-5.6
6.32.4-.2
7. 69.2-1.5
8. 106-7.0
9. 103-9.2
10. 92.2-9.8
Average for today was 90.1(day 4 at 80+-2 of those at 90+) and the tank is at 90.3 after 82.4 miles with all 10 pips showing.

Michael, are you back in the Corolla?

Go for 600mi, John! :smilingface (52):

Rick, keep pushing!!

Dang, Larry!!! :woot:

A little warmer on the way back home -- but I had to fight the wind and traffic wasn't so kind. Of course, since it is Monday I was distracted by my mother on the phone as well (putting Bluetooth to good use!!!). I managed to keep it over 50mpg all the way to the gas station. :D Then when I filled up the tank wouldn't take more than 0.7g LESS THAN the SG estimated??

That took the tank up from the predicted 49.4mpg to over 50 for the tank (4th tank at 50+mpg!!) and though I know there is something up with this, I'm sure it will even out over the next tank. <Shrug> Don't look a gift horse in the mouth... The next tank is going to be wonky anyway with <200mi before I fill it again for the trip to Milwaukee this weekend. ;)

54F, 10mph wind from the WNW, clear:

51.1mpg for 22.7 (Work to gas station -- PR!!!)
40.9mpg for 1.8mi (Gas station to home -- not a PR but close :D)

So, with the SG showing 49.4mpg over 715.8mi, I was only able to put in 13.8g instead of 14.5g -- leaving me with 51.866!! :)

The lifetime average is up another 1/10th too. :D

I did a great mpg today. A shame. A shame because if I do so well, it's just because the temperature is 15c/60f during the night and 20c/68f during the day. It is supposed to be 2c/36f night and 11c/52f day.

Here, everybody are so happy. The global warming, it's so great. No concern for the developing world and the children future.

lost a few on the way home. i had to take the highway to an appointment after work, and had to at least pretend to keep up. so i did 55, even though it was 65.

horrendous head wind, knocked me down to 59.8........

and battery probs again, which i will post in a separate thread.

First commute from the new house this morning. Respectable results: 80 MPG, 14 miles, 61F. Some highlights:

No way to plug in the EBH, so I'll have to deal with cold-ICE startups, BUT ...
Steady downhill through the development for ~1/3 mile, enough for mostly NICE-on during S1 warmup. Still got 50 MPG for the first 5 minute segment.
A few hills, some of which can be climbed unmolested, others with company on the bumper forcing high-ish RPMs
Lots of good potential P&G opportunities, some limited by traffic today.
Final leg the same as the old route, including the best P&G segment through an industrial park.

I have at least two other route options to try immediately, and another later on after a long-term road closure (for a bridge repair) is over.

Thanks, Ken! I couldn't quite make it this morning due to a slightly later start throwing several lights my direction. :(

Nice work with the 42.2mpg!

33F, 7mph wind from the SSW, clear:

49.4mpg for 22.3mi (Home to work -- still missing 0.2mi??)

The tank is sitting at 48.6mpg over 24.2mi with 15.5g left.

It should be in the 60s this afternoon so I'll just have to pull it up on the way home.

I have to get on the road earlier. :(

cool, windy and i had to take the 4 lane. the semis were crazy this morning, darting in and out among themselves as if they were compact cars.....one came up alongside, with a car behind it with decent space. but the guy on my tail just couldn't wait the 10 seconds it would take for them to get by, so he popped himself into the space behind the truck and in front of the car. $%&(*$& idiot. then he hugged the semi's bumper for a couple of miles. i am sure the truck had no idea he was there. hmm, maybe he's a hypermiler? nah......

For those that were wondering, yes, I'm back in the 'rolla. I only get to drive the Prius on weekends or on vacations.

I tried a slightly different route change this morning. It didn't make that much difference. Instead of down and over, I went over and down. If the lights are timed right, it could be better. I might give it another try tomorrow. Anyway, 42.2 MPG today.

I don't know about you folks but I followed my hypermiling gut instincts and threw the book at it. Then dodged as it came right back at me.

I had to drive over the Sierra Nevada mountains to Sacramento today.

145.4 miles getting there: 53.6 MPG (more downhill on the way there)
145.9 miles returning: 48.1 MPG (more uphill on the way back)

When I arrived at our data center co-location I got stymied in the parking lot while FAS'ing in from the main road by some recently-added double speed bumps. As such I had to start the ICE back up in order to get to a space.

A pair of folks that had been on a smoke break nearby approached me when I got out to let me know I gave them a laugh. One had told the other, "Look - there goes one of those electric cars. It's so quiet!", and just then I started the engine. :p

We got to talking about hypermiling. It will be nice if they show up here.

We're having chilly mornings. This is *not* helping my mpg!! It was maybe 33 today though it warmed up to 70+. This is typical desert I guess. With that I am lucky to get 40 mpg. (Wrote about that but no stopping at lights today except two turning on reds).

I also got some nice mileage DWL with SG showing up to 60 mpg up a hill. Of course it isn't typical. But if I have a nice buffer, a not too low speed (but not high either), can keep up under 1.2 gph, etc. I can get nice ratings.

So far though it is still pretty hard to get great mileage up those hills. I figure I might have a 25% grade in some places.

Yesterday's evening commute to the new home: 70 MPG, with two short errands along the way. Between busier evening streets and a 90' net elevation drop from home to work, the PM commute will likely never match the AM ride.

Brian, my wife thought your story was funny. :) Nice work with that mountain driving!!!

Eric, there was a bit of frost here yesterday as well but since I was garaged I didn't have to scrape anything. Winter is nearly upon us!!!

Laurie, not bad at all for reduced coasting! That was "approach at 30deg angle" wind. :( Still, you bested EPA specs handily!

Excellent work, Desdemona!!! :woot:

Thanks, Jerad. :) It wasn't a cake walk, that's for sure. You're hanging in there with Larry!

Jim, I'm jealous!

Not quite as cold as yesterday but close. I got going on time so I missed the traffic issues of yesterday morning but had a couple of "Where was my head on THAT?!" moments. I'm sure the two if handled correctly would have netted me at least another 1mpg. Oh well. There's always next time. :)

I ran some errands yesterday afternoon. Just under 40 mpg for the entire trip home. This morning was great! 43.7 MPG! I could have done better, but I got to a couple lights that were about to change to green. I lost a few tenths of an MPG. Oh well, it was still a good morning.

i had an amusing encounter at the gas station where i get my morning coffee on the way to work. i am sure you all familiar with gas stations/convenience stores where you can park just to the side of the entrance, along the curb that runs in front of the store. i won't get into the frustration caused when drivers park in front of the door, along the yellow curb and when there are cars at the pumps you can't get through, but that's another rant LOL.

i pulled in from one end of the pumps, on a glide right along the curb. a big snotty ford pickup roared in just as i cleared the yellow curb and was ready to shut the car off. he's coming in at an angle, which would have put him parallel to the curb.....had i not been in what he apparently wanted to claim as HIS parking spot. he was very aggressive about not slowing down, and i kind of just keep my glide until our front bumpers were pretty darn close. i was straight, he was still angled in. i think he expected me to back up and get out of his way. so......i simply turned the car off and got out. he backed up and went and parked somewhere on the other side of the building LOLOLOL.....

It's raining. I'd love to complain about how it's responsible for ruining my FE but we need it so badly that I have a very hard time complaining. This drought has been terrible :(

A combination of factors has screwed this tank up pretty badly, particularly a bunch of short trips around town running errands along with a couple of highway runs. Still hanging on to 63.x, though, which just goes to show you what some incredible engineering and the most primitive of hypermiling tactics will get you with truly mixed driving. My hope is that things might calm down a bit for the rest of this tank so that I can pull back up a little. I won't run around crying if it doesn't happen but it would be nice to see another 67+ on the MFD. Even better to see one at the pump.

Nice work, all!!

Larry, still kickin' the big ones out. Nice! :D

Ken, you never know!

Rick, get that extension cord pronto!!

Laurie, nice work at the pump -- and I know what you mean with that trip home. :p

Today was mostly a "What the heck??" experience for me after this morning. I left work to get my oil changed and though I popped it up to 50.6mpg before departing my normal route, the traffic really took a toll. Then there is the behavior at the dealership () pulling it down further, then the rush hour traffic home... followed by light after light after ARG!!! light to Choir. I tried hard to pull it up on the way home and started out well (162mpg to the first stop sign ;) :D), when I got to the main roadway something was just not clicking. The numbers just wouldn't come for me?? It could be the temp but I had it up at 54.6mpg after the first section -- which is pretty unheard of. Then it just flopped. :(

52F for the afternoon, 39F on the way back from Church, no wind, clear:

46.5mpg for 10.7mi (Work to dealership)
5.8mpg for 0.3mi (Dealership -- What the @#$%?!?!?)
47.2mpg for 12.3mi (Dealership to home -- I don't like rush hour. :p)
46.1mpg for 16.7mi (Home to Chuch -- Okay. Huh?)
53.6mpg for 16.8mi (Church to home -- Not the 60+ I wanted, but I'll live. ;))

All this has the tank back below 50 again (:() to 48.7mpg over 125.7mi with 13.4g left.

Now I'm going to bed with dreams of tearing it up tomorrow. :Banane28:

Right Lane Cruiser

It didn't hurt that I was a tad early and most of the route had very little traffic on it. :) I even made a run at my PR in these cold temps!!! A couple more green lights would have done it...

35F, 6mph wind from the SSE, clear:

55.1mpg for 22.2mi (Home to work -- SG cut out once so I guess that's where the 0.3mi went?)

The tank is back up to 49.6mpg over 148.0mi with 13.0g left.

Chuck

It was unintentional, but not an authentic record nonetheless.

My FAS switch was not responsive, so I did it the old-fashioned way - cut the ignition with the keys. Occasionally the instant mpg pegs at 150 and stays as if I have indefinite fuel cutoff, even if I'm at full throttle. Finally got in a normal instant mpg mode after about two miles of this.

So today at 48F, I got 102.2mpg* :o:o:o

This was my first morning with the radiator block - was going to go for 100mpg in a legit manner. :(

Tim's rain made its way north. Last night's commute in the midst of it was sub-60 MPG. Don't even know exactly what it was. Don't care. :( But we need the rain badly, so I'm not complaining ... too much. ;)

Fillup last night. Interestingly, it took the exact same amount of fuel as the previous fillup. This tank: 626 miles, 64.07 MPG calculated. Last tank: 767 miles, 78.51 MPG calculated. Oh, the idiosyncracies of the Prius bladder!

Route option #3 from the new house this morning. This one's largely on thoroughfares, higher speeds, but about a mile and a half shorter. Result: 71 MPG. 14 degrees cooler than yesterday's 80 MPG, so with all things equal, total fuel consumption on this one's probably a tad less. And I can sleep in for an extra 10 minutes! :p

Andrew, I'll have to check tomorrow morning so I can let you know. In combination with the grill block and warm up P&G, the temp hit seems to be not that bad yet? Slush on the road is really going to hurt me though, and my glides are already significantly reduced even though I've kept the tire pressure up. Air density, perhaps?

I think I'm in line for some 60s this Spring. ;)

Chilly weather down here (for us, at least). This morning temps were in the high 60s. Combined with a lot of bumper to bumper traffic, it brought the average down to 44.7 MPG. Tank is at 405 miles and at the 1/4 mark.

awesome numbers, chuck. they count regardless.Had the instant MPG manual FAS malfunction not happened, I think this morning's run would have accurately read 88-92mpg - good, but not a personal record and certainly not a 100mpg run.

My lifetime mpg has been increasing it seems monthly instead of quarterly - now up to 60.6mpg (was around 47mpg when it was bought in Sept 2000).

I've got some errands to run tomorrow that I can't be late for, so I'm going to fill up tonight. I do have some errands to run tonight, so I'm going to add a little test run into the mix so I can get past 450 miles on this tank. I'm at 422.7 miles with a tad under 1/4 tank left on the guess gauge. My wife mentioned a errand that might involve some highway driving, so I might suggest that I take care of that tonight.

I've also been doing some thinking. I've got a couple routes home from work. The long highway route is an extra 7 miles, 5-10 minutes, and 0.1 gallons, but saves me $0.50 in tolls. That extra 0.1 gallon costs about $0.30 (at $3/gallon). I'm saving $0.20. Now is that 20 cents worth the extra miles on my vehicle. If my 'rolla cost less than 2.8 cents per mile to maintain, it would. Somehow, I think the cost of maintenance is a little more. Especially with 108k miles on the odometer. I think I'm going to go back to my previous, shorter route. Plus, I use it when I run the majority of my afternoon errands anyway.

40.0 MPG this morning on wet roads. I had to fight for it too.

Count me in ... although I wonder what the effect would be if we were to add about 2 or 3 ounces of water to each tire... while still warm it would be ok, but later when its cold when parked it would freeze to a nice out of balance lump and would seriously dampen (chuckle) his glides ;)

Andrew, I checked this morning and the coolant temperature was at 130F. Normal operating temperature for the car appears to be around 192F or so. The outside temp was 30F and though my car is garaged I don't think the temp is much (if at all) higher inside there because there are open seams around the structure. I'll insulate it eventually but it will be a while...

Wow, was the traffic BAD this morning! I left almost the same time I did yesterday and ended up with light after light because of all the drivers on the road. What in the world?? I had some good segments but that traffic with tailgaiters... :p

Anyway, I can officially chalk up my lowest temperature 50+mpg run now. ;)

Strong pulse won: 52.0 vs 36.5 and 38.4. 44.2 on the way home, 37.0 from home to work this morning. Only problem with strong pulses after a glide or restart is TorqueNada is throwing codes: P197, P340, P1262. Quick to clear with the SG but I will need to figure these out. Nice work, Ken! Those 40s add up. :)

Interesting test -- I've been doing some of that myself on my warm up P&G route from the house. I have two FASes to get me to the first light. The first one is to a 4 way stop -- I usually back out of the driveway, pulse up to ~26mph around a curve, then coast down to the 4 way. I hit 40mpg this morning doing that in 30F weather. Once I make a right, I pulse up to 30mph and coast to the light. Yesterday it hit 49.6mpg at the light, but this morning I had to pulse higher because of a car on my bumper (took it to 35mph instead but still coasted all the way down) and it only got up to 46.4mpg.

That second FAS has quite different results depending on how hard I pulse before it. I tried getting up to speed as fast as I could once to extend the glide and I got worse results. There seems to be a sweet spot for this that is fairly well defined and I'm slowly zeroing in on it as I try variations every morning.

Right Lane Cruiser
10-26-2007, 08:05 AM
Andrew -- yup, 130F. The temperature can vary a bit -- this was one of the warmer times I've seen it -- based on how warm it was when I parked. I know it is wasteful but I also plug in the car as soon as I pull into the garage -- it seems to hold the temp better and besides, I don't have a timer yet. :o

I'll have to keep track to see what the temp does on a day to day basis.

in addition to the terrible new addition to driving bad habits, the one in which mr. antsy pulls out from back in a pack and passes a bunch of cars ahead of him, i am noticing another new problem which i have seen quite a lot recently.

it's cross/side road traffic that doesn't even wait to pull onto the road in front of you. used to be you could figure they would wait if it looked like you were too close.....not anymore, they just pull right out and kind of bully their way into line.

an additional facet, and i saw this twice this morning, is not even bothering to stop for the stop sign on the road they are on. just keep driving and pull right out.

people are getting more and more crazy, and i am really tired of them.

i am assuming everyone is at the meeting, hence the small number of posts today. i did just speak to wayne and sean, and will let them fill in what they experienced with my car.

as for sean's, i may have redeemed myself a little with a 46.6 to the barn, and 43 back home. there was a lot of traffic on the backroads making it more difficult to safely FAS.

Hi Laurie and Rick:

___Everything appears as it should wrt Assist, hidden charging and regen w/ SoC hanging a little low at 17 of 20 but steady and stable. See Laurie’s IMA thread for the end results after the forced recal but it appears to be good results so far. We will know even more by tomorrow afternoon.

___Good Luck

To the MiHG meet and back today. Some discrepancy between my (new) SG and the MFD, I'll have to see if that continues and calibrate as needed. But I have the XGAUGE gauges for SOC and HV battery voltage working, and I'm also showing trip MPG on the gauges screen. :D

75.8 / 97.2 miles / 52F - a mix of city driving and trying some SHM on the secondary back roads
73.1 / 96.5 miles / 48F - same thing on the way back, a little higher speed due to heavier traffic. MFD calculated at 69.6 for this segment.
82.2 / 1.8 miles / 46F

72.5 or 74.5 for the day (194.7 miles), depending on if you believe the MFD before/after or the SG.

The tank's at 74.7 / 317 miles / 6 pips.

I went to a Halloween party tonight out in the boonies. Boy this was fun! I didn't do that great due to a detour that I didn't know about, yesh! And my routine route contained a street I would really have to know, but aside from that... There were nice long abandoned streets with relatively low speeds (30-40). Going home I just put the car in neutral and went down the hill with no worries of who might be behind me and coasted maybe 4 miles or so. Then I went up a hill, no cars, so I didn't have to worry about slowing anyone down.

Anyway this was great practice, and a nice day that still ended 38 or so, despite some earlier short trips in traffic.

Got my mocassins btw. But didn't wear them as it was night and I was feeling I had enough costumes on. :-)

I had a pretty good day considering that the majority of yesterday's miles were on the highway. The trip from Wayne's to Oak Creek had, shall we say, less than optimal conditions for Hypermiling.:( The winds were at an ~45* angle and were around 20 mph or more and the temperature was 52F. We didn't make our 100 mpg goal but we did see exactly 100 mpg ~2 traffic lights from the meeting but ended up with 99.4 by the time we parked.:woot: Yesterday's numbers:
1. 64.8-126.6(home to Tom's)
2. 69.4-.4(Tom's to IHOP)
3. 65.1-34.0(IHOP to Wayne's)
4.99.4-37.7(Wayne's to Oak Creek)
5. 57.8-8.9(clinic trip)
6. 43.2-1.0(Sean's trip from the meeting to Culvers on a cold engine)
7. 69.2-19.8(followed Wayne as he and Sean tested Laurie's car-how much of that was circling through parking lots waiting for lights to change?:D)
8. 73.1-35.1(end of testing Laurie's car to Wayne's)
9. ??- ??(forgot to record results for trip from Wayne's to Tom's:mad:)
10. 70.7-129(Tom's to home)
Average for Saturday was 70.0

Today was a bit less driving.;) From home to church was 61.0 for 5.2 miles, from church to gas station was 34.6 for 1.3 miles, and from the station to home was 82.4 for 6.4 miles. Average was 69.8 for the day.

sean dropped the car off at the barn. after filling me in on what was done to it, and what i needed to do to keep the charge up, i headed for home. i FASed more than usual, though not as much as sean probably would have......the battery did drop to half, but i got it to return where it belonged when i got past the hills.

78.3 for the trip home

Hi Laurie:

___78.3, holy smokes! Remember that little discussion we had about what was needed? I think you are really close to finding it all of a sudden ;) Now if we could just get you out of the pack during the climbs! We will talk again very soon …

___Rick, that Focus is still allowing some magic to be found even with dropping temps :)

wayne, on of the things that holds me back is i let myself feel pressured by vehicles coming up behind me. i have started pulling to the right a little to indicate they should pass, but there are parts of my ride home that have no shoulder whatsoever. and as i also told sean, i am a little reticient to FAS after dark, which will be harder after we have snow.........

Holy Smokin Hypermiler ! I'll second that ! er is it third ? :woot:The HCH is getting Hot!

Thanks Wayne! The magic is still there - I found that spot on 35 again today (the road and accelerator pedal). I did 5.5 miles DWL at .6gph for 73-78 mpg - if I could smooth the bumps out I might actually hold the pedal dead still and get even more! I'm really starting to be impressed with the "city" numbers . Most of the 21 miles were above 50 today , inconsiderate drivers dropped it below my mark though.
