I have a 2008 Escape Hybrid and I seem to have a discrepency with the car's average MPG stated on the dash panal and my actual (calculated) MPG. I was wondering if any other owner's of the Escape or Mariner Hybrid have noticed this as well. Right now my car says I am getting 37.2 average MPG but according to my fuel logs, I am at 34.2 MPG.

___Although I do have not driven an 08 FEH through a tank yet, it is not at all uncommon for an FCD to be more then just a bit optimistic. A fillup is also only an estimate unless it can be topped off to the exact same amount of fuel on each and every fill. A click off of the pump is far less accurate but over several tanks, the over and under averages will wedge down to the exact FE as the miles pile on.

___Prius’ are notorious for over optimistic FCD’s. All the fillups I have seen on Prius below 99.9 mpg have shown the FCD’s to be a bit optimistic and it appears to be purposely offset to give the owners a little encouragement. You can see this via an SG-II w/ no offsets calibrated in because an FCD is not a legally calibrated device like the odometer supposedly is. Even odometers have been known to be tweaked to show higher FE/miles then what you many have actually achieved or driven. Hey Wayne,
Thanks for the reply. I have over 14,000 miles on already so it doesn't seem to have leveled out. It is possible that my numbers are off a little as I have only logged about 12,800 miles on the tanks I have kept track of or gas slips I have kept. I don't top off my tank when I fill up as they say that lets more gas fumes escape so I just fill until the pump stops. I am sure that the feul level varies as there is a range in the milage I get from tank to tank.

I've been reading these old posts, because I found the fuel log for Escape1
and since it was not marked as a Hybrid, I got interested because I have a new ICE only.

He hasn't posted in a long time, so I expect the error will stay in the fuel logs.. :(
