View Full Version : Idea for a commercial
SSixty 10-16-2007, 11:30 AM I'm just thinking outloud, so don't mind me. Feel free to comment. But I had to say how I feel. This is mostly about the needless supersizing of vehicles and how most consumers just eat it up. So I figured if someone made a commercial showing that rationale maybe it would change a few people's minds.
Starring a typical soccer mom.
Wakes up, makes breakfast for seven. Eats alone. Tosses the rest to the garbage.
Goes to the movies, gets seven tickets. Watches movie alone.
Goes to a restaurant, table for seven. Eats lunch alone.
Goes to a theme park, gets seven tickets. Alone.
Voice over guy: "You wouldn't do this. So why do you do this:"
Shows woman in a seven-passenger SUV, alone.
My big problem is MOST people do their driving alone. So why do people drop big bucks on something just because a commercial tells them to? I think that, just like the whtthefxup cigarette commercials, there needs to be some reality-check car commercials. And not just Saturn-like ones where they tell you to buy a particular car, but merely pointing out the obsurdity.
Rant over. Feel free to comment.
BailOut 10-16-2007, 11:48 AM That would be an awesome commercial. :)
Allow me to add my own idea for one:
Show a Hummer owner fueling up. Show a shot of the trip meter. Zoom in on the pump readout as it tops off, then focus in on the total price.
Show a subcompact owner fueling up. Show a shot of the trip meter. Zoom in on the pump readout as it tops off, then focus in on the total price.
Text on a plain screen for 5 seconds: You used to think big trucks were silly. Now you know they are.
SSixty 10-16-2007, 12:01 PM Hi Brian,
I think I remember seeing a commercial with a similar tone just a different vehicle. One was perhaps the Prius and the other I believe was an Audi sports car. The two people in the sports car pull up to the traffic light next to a Prius and rev then laugh at the Prius drivers. Then they accelerate hard, laughing. Then they both show up at the same gas station. The Prius drivers look at the bill and laugh at the sports car. I liked it. It was pro-FE car and pro-FE driving.
I think there ought to be more of these types of commercials on tv, since that is where most kids and many adults get their information anyway.
Chuck 10-16-2007, 12:10 PM I really wish there were public service ads like that and such themes were injected into TV shows and movies.
A variation of SSixty's ad would show the entire neighborhood with Suburbans (Read: if everybody has one, then how is it a status symbol?)
Hi SSixty:
___That was a fabulous idea you came up with! The next time we see a review online were the author states the FE wasn’t very good but it can haul 7, you should enter your comments exactly as posted here. What an impact that would make imho.
___I will have to remember this one for a future debate as well ;)
___Good Luck

Fenrir 10-16-2007, 02:53 PM So why do people drop big bucks on something just because a commercial tells them to?My favorite excuse: I need it because I have two big dogs. :)

MUAHAHAHAHAHA!
I heard that somewhere before...
;)
Hi SSixty:
___I wonder if Smart or possibly Scion would be interested your idea given they do not sell 7-passenger (2 person capacity) behemoths? I also would love to see a commercial with your theme in mind.

Laurie,
If you change the color on the CRX above to white and the badge on the back from Si to HF, that was my car for 12 years!
Actually, I've driven the same car since 1985:
- 86 CRX HF
- 88 CRX HF
- 00 Insight (same thing, just the hybrid version)
Neicy 10-16-2007, 05:36 PM I think that is a GREAT idea. Why? Because it keeps peoples' interest until the punch line. If you did it with a hummer showing the fuel gauge people would turn it off knowing it's a car commercial - but this would hold their interest so they could find out why the soccer mom is behaving so wierd. Priceless!
BTW that Prius vs sports car commercial was on you-tube when I saw it. Just tried to find it again but can't.

desdemona 10-18-2007, 12:06 AM I love all the ad ideas, esp. the 7 ad. I think it would be very attention grabbing. I'd like to see Ridley Scott do the ad (if he's still around).
