View Full Version : New 07 HCH Owner with Questions
RobinC 10-02-2007, 04:46 PM Hey Everyone,
I just bought a new 2007 HCH and have a few questions...
When will my engine be "broken in" enough to be getting better mileage? The Dealer told me it would take up until about my first oil change?
I was also wondering if there was a link to a page anywhere that would give me info specifically on the HCH as to its optimal driving tips etc. I'm interested in learning more about how to drive my model of car specifically, like are their any differences in coasting with a HCH vs. a Prius for example.
Thanks!!!
Robin
Right Lane Cruiser 10-02-2007, 05:40 PM Welcome, Robin!! You've chosen a very fine automobile to work with -- I'm jealous!!
As for specifics, today is your day. :) Have a look at this article and I think it will give you lots of food for thought!
Adapting Basic Hypermiling Techniques to the HCH-II (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1306)
Tara is a gifted writer and put together a wonderful article. In fact, this is the article that brought me to CleanMPG.
Why don't you post some specifics about your route and environment? Traffic? Hills? Highway versus city driving?
We look forward to hearing more from you in the near future!!!
brick 10-02-2007, 07:03 PM Welcome! That article by Tarabell is a really fantastic piece. Also, I think that the break-in process is at least as much driver as it is car. If you do some basic setup stuff like increase your tire inflation pressure, you will see some immediate improvement with quite a bit more potential once you start implementing some new techniques.
bear15 10-02-2007, 08:34 PM Congrats on your new civic hybrid. We really like ours. Yes, read the suggested article and this should give you most of the information you need to receive good mpg immediately. We were able to receive above the EPA estimates on our first tank and ever since.
Good Luck. . . . :D

RobinC 10-09-2007, 03:41 PM Awesome, thanks very much everyone for their help! I'm going to read the article right away!!
I drive half highway/half city on the way to work which takes me about 10 min... no hills as I live on the Canadian prairie and traffic is light to moderate... with that being said, with tire inflation... it gets very icy and there is tons of snow here in the winter, is tire inflation recommended in those conditions?
Again, thanks everyone!!!
laurieaw 10-09-2007, 03:55 PM robin, welcome. i also have adverse winter conditions, living in minnesota. i don't know what tires come on the 2007, but they are usually low rolling resistance, which are not known for being great on ice and snow. during the winter i switch mine out for snow tires. they cost me a few miles per gallon, but i feel it's a lot safer and that's a valid tradeoff.
enjoy your car :)
Harold 10-09-2007, 10:41 PM You can keep your snow tires at 44 lbs. as well. That way your FE will not suffer to much. I find my snows handle better with the high pressure.H

Hi Robin;
OK, you gave us a good bit of information that may help me provide you with a good ballpark for your engine break-in. ;) Just for giggles, is it Saskatchewan or Manitoba?
Most HCH-2 owners in these parts report symptoms of a noticeable break-in after the first oil change provided that you accumulate at least 10,000 km's and a full winter cycle.
BTW, I fully second everyone else's reference to Tarabell's article. Look it at as a "must read of biblical value" for every serious HCH-2 owner.
Cheers;
MSantos
