MercedesBenz announced a bevy of fuel efficient vehicles including cleaner diesels and hybrids for future purchase yet really wants to sell the C 63 AMG. This C-Class is powered by a 6.3-litre V8 engine developing 457 hp. It allows an abominable 17.6 mpg US combined on the Euro test cycles :angry:

FRANKFURT, Germany - The European car industry's attempts to embrace the environmental cause at the Frankfurt car show bought to mind a remark from John Mitchell, President Nixon's attorney general, warning his audience to "Watch what we do, not what we say."

It seemed that every set-piece speech by every CEO at the Frankfurt show tried to claim the green high ground. Certainly, there were some impressive examples of automobiles that eked out scarce resources in impressively small amounts.

There were the first European petrol or diesel electric hybrids. There was a variation on the Chevrolet Volt's idea of a battery powered car backed up this time by a diesel, not a petrol engine. There were concept cars demonstrating hydrogen fuel cell power, electric power trains and homogeneous combustion, but none of these impressive new technologies were actually available to buy at dealerships. Perhaps some Europeans will finally match Japan's Toyota and Honda with hybrids next year, but cars powered predominantly by batteries won't be on dealer lots for at least 3 years … http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070920/AUTO02/709200325/1148/AUTO01
