I've been lurking this site for a few months. I stumbled on it while researching mpg upgrades/techniques for use in my 2000 Nissan Altima 5 speed. I've been observing my mileage at the pump over the past few years, never really trying very hard to get good mileage. Old average was around 27 mpg, and ranged anywhere from 24-31, but was usually between 25 and 28. Note that I have a slow leak in 2 tires, and they're max pressure rated for 35psi, and the door jam says 29/30 psi front and rear respectively.

So I found this site and feel that it offers the best info of the sites I've seen in this field and it's updated frequently, so I've made it a daily stop. Since finding CleanMPG.com, I've slowly using the driving techniques outlined (without disturbing other drivers). Got up to a solid 29mpg.

Then I got the Scanguage II the other day.

I've had it for 2 days now, and was initailly getting 31 mpg, but today on the way to work I pulled off a nice 36 mpg. Please note that I haven't corrected the fuel consumption per the manual, but those numbers are pretty great assuming they are within ~3%.

Good to know: Over the past two weeks, I've tried FAS, and it works just dandy. Then I tried it in my Nissan with the Scanguage plugged in, and it tripped a trouble code P0605 (ECU fault). I think I might stay away from FAS's for a while, seeing as I get 200+mpg on the highway while simply coasting in neutral downhill. I think thats good enough for me.

Also: My girlfriend owns a 2000 Jetta TDI 5 speed. I love that thing. I also hate it. I've had some great VWs, but any VW enthusiast will tell you that if they aren't built in Germany they have poor build quality, and that one was built in Mexico. Anyone who works on cars and is affraid of Diesels take note: I've worked on this thing, and it's as easy as any other VW I've owned (1984 GTI, 1985 Scirocco, 1987 Golf, 1987 Scirocco 16v)!

I think my next ride might be a older VW Golf TDI (90's-current, but not waiting for newer Blutech), as I value performance as well as economy.

Anyway, thanks Wayne for putting together a great site/community. Kudos.

Thank you for the kind words about CleanMPG and Wayne, Maxx.

Since you have a 5-speed there should be plenty of potential to increase your fuel economy, esp. if you work with a ScanGage.

I had a slow leak from my aggressive driving days - got the ding fixed and it holds air great....hope something like that can work for you. :)
