View Full Version : What Are The Loads On The 12v & HV Batteries

I have found partial answers for some of my questions but maybe someone here on the forum can fill in the blanks. I really want to get to know my MMH.

What is the division of labor (work load) between the 12v battery and the HV battery?

What devices are run by the 12v battery?

How is the 12v battery charged?

What does the HV battery run?

Is the total HV voltage ever used on any one device?

Is the HV voltage divided to run or charge other devices?

Is there any interaction between the 12v battery and the HV battery?

Does the 110vac inverter run off of the 12v or HV battery?

If it works like any of the other hybrids, the HV battery runs
the electric motors and supplies juice to the 12V DC/DC
converter. And maybe the A/C compressor since that needs to
produce more power than is practical to pull at 12V. Everything
else runs off the 12V like in any other car.
.
You've got a 110V inverter built in? How much power output
is it rated for, that'll probably tell you right away which
battery it's run from. The practical boundary is about a
kilowatt.

Thanks for the information hobbit.

Yes, my 08 MMH is equipped with a 110vac inverter output. It is located
in the floor console in front of the "gearshift." It's rated at 150W.

The HV battery pack provides ALL POWER for all electrical accessories, lamps, fans, radio, EVERYTHING via 330v DC / 14v DC converter... anytime the key is in "run" position.

The 12v battery powers anything turned on when the key is out, or in ACC position.

If you leave the key in "run" and do not start the car, the HV battery will open relays to cut demands on it if the battery drops to about 300v. This protects itself from excessive discharge, and leaves enough power to start the car.

Thanks John, great information.

I'm trying to get to your neck of the woods before it snows.
