More fuel efficient FFH on the way but the Plug-in will have to wait :( (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/in-the-news/t-2009-ford-fusion-hybrid-seen-in-the-wild-5918.html)

The 2009 Ford Fusion Hybrid will include the totally redesigned Gen 2 Hybrid system that is rumored to be significantly more fuel efficient than the current eCVT based system used in the 2008 Ford Escape HEV. It will more then likely use the new 2.5L I4 for its ICE although there appears to be no PHEV functionality from initial launch.

Other engines will include a std. 190 HP 2.5L I4 with more FE capability then the current 2.3 w/ Auto (2008 Ford Fusion 2.3L w/ Auto achieves 20/28 on the 08 EPA test cycles), a much improved 250 HP 3.0L V6 including more power and higher FE as well as a 265 HP Twin-Turbo Direct Injected 2.5L I4 Twin-Force engine - said to have the V6’s power yet maintain the I4’s fuel economy.

Other changes to the 2009 Fusion will include a new interior similar to that in the 08 Escape/Focus or like that previewed in the 09 Flex.

These above image was posted on the Mexican auto site autocosmos.mx and were taken down within hours after Ford threatened a lawsuit. I suspect these images were taken from within the Ford Fusion manufacturing plant in Hermosillo, Mexico and thus Ford’s aggressiveness in making sure they disappear from the public eye. I have it confirmed that this is indeed the new design.

That actually looks pretty nice. I wonder what kind of MPG it gets.

the base I4 MPG is to go up slightly so let's say 22/30 or so ..

The HYBRID should compete well with the Camry/Altima hybrid ... we might get a surprise, and the Fusion could do well above the other 2 midsizers, but I would not count on it... at this point the Ford Hybrid system is quite conventional Atkinson cycle I4, parallel electric engine and eCVT. So I would not expect miracles. so let's say matching Camry perfectly - 33/34

(all mileage numbers are 08 EPA numbers)

PS: here are the pictures of the mules .. I did not see the link in the OP. http://jalopnik.com/cars/spy-photos/2009-ford-fusion-and-2009-ford-fusion-hybrid-mule-289165.php

Considering that over a year ago, I saw them in a lot in Dearborn, I'll believe it when I see one with a window sticker.

The Hy-Wire is drivable and exists, but that doesn't mean I can buy it either. Sorry, they've had their chances, they've had 4 years, yet all they seem to do is let me down when it comes to Hybrids.

what do you mean?

Yes, Hy-Series is FAR from production ready

This is supposed to happen - the simple reason follows: the Escape system is Escape specific - Ford cannot fit it in any other car - so the Gen2's main goal was to make the Hybrid system flexible in terms of what ICE is connected to it and what car it is in ..

Finally - we know the Hybrid is coming because about 5 months ago a supplier proudly issued a PR saying they were awarded the contract for the wiring system..

But yes - until this thing is on the lot with a window sticker - it is all just a prediction .. Job1 is before September 2008.

The overall shape is cool, but I don't like the "wall of chrome" look in front. My 6 came with a chrome strip up front, about a third of the amount as on this Fusion. So I asked for and got a new body color sport grille for X-mas, which I think looks much better.
