View Full Version : Congratulations Marathon Team!
tbaleno 04-22-2006, 11:03 PM You guys made it to HBO. I was too excited to actualy hear what you guys said but I hear it will be on "on demand" on cable soon and I have it TIVOed and am going to watch it again tomorrow.
Congratulatons on spreading the news.
philmcneal 04-22-2006, 11:22 PM what no way! Public press that's crazy!!!!!!!!
oh never mind... i thought cleanmpg got televised press... haha my bad.
tbaleno 04-23-2006, 01:12 AM Alas. If only we existed back then ;)
krousdb 04-23-2006, 08:46 AM I dont get HBO. Supposedly we were to have a copy but nothing yet. How long was our segment? What did they say?
Hi Dan:
___I was in chat with Tom while he was watching it. They had Dave B. first, and we all followed. They used my 10% of US fuel consumption at stop lights comment (shouldn’t have used that one exactly as I was quoted ;)) and had all of us as a group. I cannot wait to see it directly … Where are the DVD’s :(
___Tom said they had nothing on our teams FE though?
___Good Luck
___Wayne
tbaleno 04-23-2006, 01:05 PM I re-watched the segment today. it was 1 minute long (it seemed longer at the time). They had a tag line with the marthon date and time and you guys talked about the holy grail of 100mpg. In the background someone (wayne I think) was reporting in on the phone 113mpg.
Dave talked about the types of people that by hybrids, Barllow talked about how he was a conservative. There were other comments, but I couldn't memorize the whole segment.
Wayne, I looked out for it, and confirmed you didn't have the greenhybrid hat on.
Hi Tom:
___Can you get the camcorder out and record what shows up on the TV and upload just that 1 minute segment? Dan and I may never see the DVD itself and it certainly could not hurt CleanMPG given some of the participants of that one segment are those that are members here for the most part ;)
___Good Luck
___Wayne
tbaleno 04-23-2006, 01:31 PM I'll see what I can do.
philmcneal 04-23-2006, 04:58 PM no one has a tv tuner? **** if i only had HBO... why are the best shows are for the rich grr!!!
tbaleno 04-23-2006, 05:19 PM My old laptop had a tv tuner and if it were still working I would have used that to grab it. Since I don't have a laptop with a tv tuner or video capture car I have to wire it up to my home theater PC which is a pretty involved process since the tivo is in the basement and My HTPC is in my bedroom on the second floor.
efusco 04-23-2006, 06:37 PM I've got the program on TIVO and can upload it from there to my PC, and from there to DVD, but I have no idea how to edit out the segment for posting on the web. If you know how let me know and I'm glad to post it somewhere.
Hi Efusco:
___Welcome and it was nice to see your first post here! So what did you think about the program? Good, bad, just OK?
___Good Luck
___Wayne
krousdb 04-23-2006, 06:55 PM Welcome Evan! I look forward to the clip.
GaryG 04-23-2006, 07:35 PM It's been six months since I first read that article and Wayne was the only one I picked up on in the piece. Maybe it was because he explained why he used xcel as his posting name. Back then, he was posting about going to the Dearborn FEH Event in the GH FEH forum . Now, I find out that others here were part of that Marathon and feel deeply honored to be apart of CleanMPG.
If you guy's are like me, six months is worth about 15mpg more than back then in a all out marathon now. Maybe you should think about a repeat and drive the way you wish you had or could back then. With the surge in gas prices, it could make headline news everywhere. Having a Team CleanMPG.com T shirt and hat on wounldn't hurt either.

tbaleno 04-23-2006, 07:41 PM I expect there wouldn't be too much change to the numbers. The techniques haven't changed too much for the prius II. However, it would be interesting to see what they could do with a FEH knowing what you have found out.
efusco 04-23-2006, 08:01 PM Thanks guys, never even knew the forum existed...Tom never mentioned it...I wonder if Dan will be punished for posting a link that I could see!?
Honestly, I got kinda bored after about 20 minutes of the program and started skipping forward until I found the stuff about the marathon. It's mostly a rehash of the same 'doom and gloom' we've always heard about global warming and I wasn't hearing anything new. Maybe the end has more novel info.
All I kept thinking while watching it is that only people who already give a **** about the environment and global warming will give a darn and the Hummer drivers will be too busy whacking baby seals to bother watching! ;-)

Dan will only get punished if anyone finds out where I posted that link.:D

Use your burning software to edit the chunk you want, and save it to your drive as a DVD file (.VOB) or straight MPEG-2 (.mpg) instead of burning it to dvd.
TiVo community forums has lots of advice on how to make that work, even with the DRM. (Nero works almost 100%) The loophole for saving it to the drive instead of dvd is embarrassingly large- almost as big as the iTunes CD-burn loophole.
From there its a straight file xfer to wherever you want. Do the conversion at a low bitrate to keep the file size down, although 1 minute shouldn't be too bad if it was recorded on basic or medium.

I'm not sure what all that means, but I'll see what I can do.
Green&Blue 04-23-2006, 10:34 PM I don't have HBO 'on demand' (you only get that on cable, and I have DTV), but I have a friend who does - and both of us have DVD recorders. Thus, I may be able to assist here - I can either record the entire program, or just the small segment. What I'd need to know is....the name of the program :o
tbaleno 04-23-2006, 10:42 PM Too Hot Not To Handle. I think just the bits with them in it would be approprate. We don't want to have HBO on our tails for distributing their material. It's 1 or two minutes long and is at about the 34 minute mark if I recal.
Green&Blue 04-23-2006, 10:50 PM I'm on it, then. I'll make two versions - one with the entire program, and the other with just the Marathon segment. Will send PM once it's done (I don't know if it's on 'on demand' yet, but will call my friend now). Meanwhile, it might be a good idea to contact the people at HBO that you dealt with, in order to acquire the release to put the content on the site ?
Thx for the quick reply ;)

"Too Hot Not to Handle"
Green&Blue 04-24-2006, 10:57 AM My DVR found it early this morning on HBO2 and recorded it. I just have to play the program / segment through the DVD recorder, and we're set. I can drop it off to Wayne or, if he's going to Madison Hybrid meeting, we could ride along together in the HCH2 and I'll bring it with me for that trip.
As an aside, I did find the program interesting, myself, so I am going to make a second DVD with the entire show - if anyone wants that, I can dup as many copies as requested. PM me if you want one, and we can make arrangements. Shouldn't be any issues with this, as it would fall under personal recording / timeshifting guidelines. Just don't rebroadcast it or charge money to see it :)
tbaleno 04-24-2006, 11:25 AM I suspect HBO will release the show on DVD so I do think they might have an issue with distributing their show even if it was not for profit. I'm no copywrite lawyer so I don't know for sure.
Green&Blue 04-26-2006, 12:46 PM I have the segments recorded to DVD (separate chapters; 1 'hybrid', one 'ethanol', one 'biodiesel'.
If I don't hear back from anyone, I'll put the disk in the mail to Wayne this weekend.
