View Full Version : SG in the heat?
desdemona 08-07-2007, 04:00 PM Hi,
I just got a SG. It is just too cool!
I haven't figured it all out, but I have a question that I haven't seen addressed. I think that doing a search for it would be quite difficult. Anyway the question is: If it is a very hot day (say over 85-- it can be up to 100 here but it isn't typical)and you have to park all day and your only option is parking in the sun, is it ok to leave the SG inside the car? I have heard the heat is hard on a computer, which this essentially is.
Also if I take the SG inside work with me (I was thinking of just pulling it off at the SG unit and not out of the OBE -- I see no reason for unplugging that), will the memory erase?
If it would can I prevent that in some way?

mparrish 08-07-2007, 04:21 PM Des,
It should not be a problem provided you keep it out of the intense heat of direct sunlight.
The manufacturer notes that if you do leave it in direct sunlight for long periods of time, the SG will temporarily lose most of its visibility for some time, before returning later.
And it is true. When I forget to put up my windshield reflector, I can't read my SG for 5-6 miles. It does eventually come back though. I don't know about long term damage.
I've never had any problems with the Texas summer heat provided I remember the windshield reflector however.

Same here when I was using it. Maybe longer. Of course Marc's 5-6 miles is, what, 30 minutes? ;)
tbaleno 08-07-2007, 04:33 PM It would probably be a good idea to take it out of your car if you can. I don't think it loses its memory. I just worry about having electronics sitting in a 110F(or more) car.

Ditto. The weekend before last, I knew I was going to be parked in the sun on a hot day for over 6 hours, so I unplugged it and put it in the center console, where it was far cooler and shaded.
desdemona 08-07-2007, 11:10 PM I can take out and put in my backpack. Sounds better than worrying about it. I have a windshield reflector, but the car will be sitting in the sun over 6 hours.
There is no options, as in the sun parking is all we have.

JimboK 08-08-2007, 07:13 AM Same here when I was using it.
I should add that when I've had it in the car -- on the dash -- with the sunshade up, I've had no problem. It's only when the sun's been beating down on it directly.
desdemona 08-08-2007, 08:11 AM I be taking it in. However, I use the sunshade all the time (otherwise I can't touch my seat or the steering wheel). However, hopefully should I forget to take it in it will be ok.
Thanks for your response everybody.

I have the same problem with my PID instrument's display at work.
FWIW the scangauge holds up to heat better than I do.
desdemona 08-10-2007, 10:46 PM Just an update: I have been taking it out of the car during the work day as my dutch oven, i mean car, is pretty dang hot. Anyway, the other day I went inside somewhere and was there a LOT longer than I thought I would be (2 hours vs 1/2 hour). Left it in. As someone said it was difficult to read for awhile, but did recover totally. I'll agree it takes the heat better than I do.
