I know 600 miles has already been breached, and is even within the EPA estimate, but its still not common...

I'm at 551 miles, the idiot light came on 50 miles ago so I've got 2.5gal to go safely, plus change and whatever crud's on the bottom. The gage tells me I'm sitting at 39.9mpg for the tank (my personal best so far, but we'll see when I fill up).

My drive home today is 34 miles so I gotta come up with a way to kill off 15 miles. Maybe I'll pick up the pizza tonight from a different place...**** that'll drag down the tank FE. What one will sacrifice in the pursuit of glory :)

I need to fill up tonight becasue I'm carpooling around tomorrow. So this will be a 601 mile tank, not an all-out best effort.

I tagged 50.2mpg for the drive yesterday, close-drafting a UPS truck for 23 miles out of the 34. 55mph, windows cracked 1 inch, AC off, 84deg ambient, no wind. I think that's my best-ever commute run (I only draft it it happens upon me; I don't seek it out) The best part is that the initial few miles were pretty crappy- its as if the car decided to turn it around for me!

Too bad the stations all just popped over $3/gal here. (Holding breath until sub-3 again, sometime in September)

Hi GoNavy:

___There is nothing better then breaking a personal best and I hope to hear you hit 700 miles very soon! On your next fill, a top off may help bust you into the 900’s! Top offs really do taste great ;)

___About the internal environment, I now know you have the hypermiling bug too. If you can find an ICE-Vest, it can and will do wonders as 84 degrees is a day in the park compared to 98 degrees and sunny w/ your AH buttoned up tight for an hour and half. I have a spare if you want me to send you one for the summer.

___I have some good things to say about the UPS drivers too. Somebody in corporate has slowed them all down as I saw one traveling at 52 mph out on I-294 3 days ago and another at 57 mph yesterday! When it costs more $/hour in fuel then it costs in driver wages, I figured it was only a matter of time. FedEx still hasn’t slowed their guys down but I suspect another 3 or 4 weeks of $2.80 +/gallon for D2 and they will as UPS is taking the other trucking companies to the cleaners in fuel costs/overall costs considering the price of D2 today.

___Good Luck and congrats on your first 600 miler and I wish you many many more to come…

I made it through last summer w/o AC. There's plenty enough airflow w/ the windows cracked an inch. Until my speed drops <40 that is.

Fortunately 98deg days are still a rare animal in these parts. One of the nice things about living on the coast. 90 is on the high side, but more common now, especially as a road temp. Its the stagnant, swampy stuff that gets to you around here.

for 240 horses that's pretty good man, although how many of those horses did you actually used ;)?

Hi GoNavy:

___When I topped off Mark’s AH last year from well down into the Low Fuel light area, I believe she held in the neighborhood of 19 gallons similar to the non-hybrid PZEV at ~ 19.6. Just to let you know what you can possibly achieve with a top off and when really pushing tanks in your AH ;)

___Good Luck

Oh fear not- I am absolutely confident I can pump in well beyond 17gal. I've gone as high as 1.7 beyond clickoff, which would make 18.9. Unforthnately the neck on the pipe is narrow and bends sharpy so you can't see the level as it gets to the neck. Not necessarily interested in going that high, though.

I MUST get a camera in the car- I've popped 50+mpg too many times too early in the season to not document. The REAL challenge is to be at 50.0 in the driveway when the key comes out. 50 at the highway exit is less challenging, given the right traffic flow and wind.

Phil- the secret is replacing the horses with Shetland ponies! (255 of 'em, not 240. IMA is almost useless but I'll count it for HP ;) ) I'm going to upgrade again, replacing them with the bunny rabbits that are eating my grass. Talk about renewable fuels!
