I've put together a working model of an MPG gauge using the line-in jack on an old laptop running a java application:

It's not obdii based, it actually looks at the waveforms coming from a fuel injector and the vehicle speed (distance) sensor.
I realize this is a niche thing and likely most appealing to the following audiences:
1. you are making reasons to put a computer in your car (maps,mp3 stuff, wireless connection from your driveway, whatever), and you want an mpg/trip gauge on there too.
2. your car is pre-obdII and fuel injected and you really want mpg feedback.
3. You don't want to pay for a scangauge (or supermid) but like tinkering and have or can get a laptop with sound support.
But I hope you, or someone you know, finds the info useful.
Thanks
