Another week is upon us! Sounds like a great time was had by all at HybridFest -- very cool! I sure hope I can make it next year.

I'm continuing my trend of poor performance this morning, unfortunately. I just can't seem to catch a break! Traffic, lights, headwind, water on the road at the last bit...

70F, 15mph headwind, overcast:

45.9mpg for 25.4mi (Home to work)

It's going to take a miracle to salvage this tank. SG reports 45.1mpg over 159mi (160.4mi ODO) with 12.5g left.

Hope everyone else is having better luck!!!

41.7 MPG for 13.8 miles this morning. I'm working at a different site this week, so it's not my normal commute.

58.5/39 miles on way home last Fri
- had dumass attacks at a few lights (ie braked hard like everyone else)
- regular exit backed up so took next exit - into more traffic.

Weekend
- Ran some speed and AC tests vs FE (trying to get a pdf to post without luck)
- This 2 hour test (of driving way too fast with max AC) dragged my 62/151mi tank down to 56/200 mi :( - but the results were worth it. Have all week to work it back up.

61.8/38 mi on way in this morning. Chilly 53F with no wind.

A steady 38.8 MPG into work this morning. About 150 miles left on this tank - maybe more depending on how much I want to play with the reserves. ;)

47 mpg in this morning. The tank got hurt pretty bad this weekend. The car did alot of idling as a result of the Basslink install. :) Also had some fun with the tach this weekend. And then there was the test drive by my neighbor.

The tank was at 21.1 buy the cars iFCD this morning. The SG had it at 23. Its now at 29/33. It will be a up hill battle. So to speak.

i looked at some mazda 3s up close - they are sharp looking! can someone 6'3" fit in drivers seat ok? i did miss the 5 spd when i was running some tests in the HCH2 this weekend - it really whines at 4k+ rpms trying to get to 70mph....

Just a quick stop here, because I'm digging out my desk at work this AM.

My trips to & from Madison/Milwaukee (none of the driving in between) this weekend averaged out to 41.15mpg - that's at 55-60mph on the Interstate, 10mpg over the old EPA highway estimate :)

Just the trip home last night came in at 41.6mpg :):)

This AM's commute - 49.8mpg :woot: (if I'd made it to work earlier, I could have taken alap or 2 around the lower level of the parking ramp to bleed off leftover momentum, & put it over 50 :D) - & that was less work than the mid-high-40's I've been getting - thank you, Wayne, Rich & Gary!

Tank average - 41.5mpg :)

My bro-in-law has a MZ3 5-door. I'm 6'2" and I fit alright in it. The headroom is a little tight with the sunroof, but the seat is adjustable to fix it. It's not roomy, but not cramped. Nice little car.

53.7 this morning.
54.0 tank.

Hi Ho its off to work we go...:(
Cool morning, little or no wind, late start, fairly heavy traffic for most of the route, these kinds of days have been giving me 30-32 mpg, but today much better with the changes in technique: 36.9 mpg for 10.4 miles.:D Now what's funny about that (sort of...) is that is .1 less than what I normally see in this truck, but yet I drove around the block adding about .3 to my route length...?? So methinks its time to make an injector cut-out switch. I think I'd like to make something shift lever mounted like some of the ones in the Insights, rather than dash mounted, looking kind of like the air switches in an 18 wheeler tractor ;)

Last night way home was 41.0 into the drive, until I found out that the daughter hadn't pulled the Red truck up the drive far enough for me to fit... :mad:so had to move it and brought me down to a 40.4 to move up the 3' - couldnt push cuz the dang curb at the driveway edge.:(

Im 6' 2"+ and fit very well in it. Its almost like setting in the Accord. Its easy for me to get in and out of.

4K rpm in the MZ3 in 5th gear would result in things going by very fast. Ive seen 3200 rpm at 70 mph.

On a side not the wife and I are giving the carpooling thing a go again. Started this morning. God how I dred driving her dirty beat up Accord. :(

Man, did that GMA segment suck or what? Exploding tires, scary key-off, drafting, Hobbit taking off shoes "to save weight" (uhhh....how 'bout invoking a glide?). I don't even remember them saying "Insight", so the viewer is left wondering how her car went from 16 to 20, yet Billy did 168. Rather disappointing.

New milestone today to work. After coming close many times, I finally pegged 6 and only 6 bars. You know, this may be a Prius first for all I know (except for that guy living at the top of Mt. Fuji :) ). Where's warmup? What happened to warmup? I killed it! It's gone. :)

https://webspace.utexas.edu/mparrish/misc/DSC02378a.JPG

130 to work. 120 in & 60 out will get me my 80. But those are now my bases. The new goals are 127 in and 65 out to get me my 85. Gotta rack up enough 85s to counter-balance the inevitable 73s that come on those crap days. Yes, I know, "only" 73 on a crap day. I feel ashamed. ;)

Well my drive to HF2k7 netted me a 54.something tank. On the way home I now have a tank just under 56 with almost 300 miles on it. I think it must be all downhill from Madison to Milwaukee. I was driving 55 and 65 mph (whatever the speed limit was) and my MPG just kept creeping upwards. Not that I'm complaining mind you. :)

Hi All:

___31.7 out to HF2007 and back in the MDX (EPA - 17/23) with Bob Winger and myself as excess baggage ;) Maybe 250 #’s of HF 2007 gear and maybe 10 miles of inner city garbage to deal with yielded decent results I thought?

___Drove the Accord to O’Hare to drop off Bob this morning. 70 – 73 degrees F, little to no wind and a 3 + mile stop and crawl as we left my home to the airport less then 30 miles away. 50.7 to the departure terminal. Got it up to 54.1 as I pulled into the drive with lighter and continuously moving traffic all the way coming home. Saw the wife had some under 30 mpg drives back and forth to work and local stores unfortunately :( I still have to get back into the swing of things with the Accord but she is like an old glove. You put her on and say Ahhhh, how nice :D

p.m. - slight head/cross wind reg'd a 47.7 . FAS ,nICE coasting as normal . LOD 25-30 at 55 mph for steady speed flats, then FAS to 40-45 mph. Accel at LOD 60-70 uphills . rinse/repeat . Avg speed reg'd a 42 mph on the return trip . Could I have been trying *too* hard ?

tank sits at 47.7 /153.3 mi

Temps started off in the 60F+ range and got to a high of 85F. Winds were almost nonexistant. I don't have an average for today.:( I got back just late enough last night that my drive today got lumped into yesterday's miles.
1) 68.3-5.8
2) 85.9-9.6
3) 77.1-9.8
4) 113-6.3
5) 84.6-5.6
6) 108-5.6
Based on the numbers, it looks like I had an 80+ day. The tank is at 84.6 after 48.6 miles even after I was naughty and forced charged the battery last night.:D I was told that bad things would happen to me if I do that again before HF '08's mpg challenge.;):D

Glad your ride is back, Wayne! Did you get to drive an HCHII at HybridFest?

Larry, simply amazing. Are you sorry yet that you got that Prius? Is the challenge gone? ;)

Debbie, there you go with those monsterous numbers again! Great job!

Rick, that car of yours sure seems capable! Those aren't bad numbers by any stretch but maybe try accelerating a little less hard up those hills? Throw some more FAS at it and you'll be surprised, I think. ;)

I FINALLY broke out of my slump today when the traffic gave me a break. :D

81F, 5mph side/head wind, overcast:

53.9mpg for 36.0mi (Work to home -- slight variation on the last leg :D)

SG reports a much better 46.6mpg over 195mi (196.9mi ODO) with 11.8g left and the needle resting right on top of the F mark. Now I KNOW I've got more gas in the tank than last time because I'm at a lower tank average for this mileage but the needle is higher.

Whatever -- I'm finally out of the 40's again for a trip!!! Still got it!! :D:D:D

It *is* capable , the driver needs work ! :p
As far as the a.m. FAS-ing ...working on the fuel cut off, that will help a bunch. Too many po-po's hiding to allow the lights to shut off without any semi's passing . Now the afternoon ,well- if I fas'd any more , I *almost* wouldn't have time to coast or accellerate ! LOL

Today's driving brought me up from 61.5 to 61.6mpg at 430mi, three pips left on the fuel gauge. Ho-hum.

More importantly, I finally rotated my tires. The high tire pressures (46/44) must be working because they barely show any wear after almost 10k miles. Just a little rounding at the corners which is uniform front to back, nice healthy tread down the middle. Pretty decent FE, too. ;) That was a major PITA since all I had to work with was the OEM scissor jack and the spare tire to use as a place holder. Nearly keeled over dead after cranking that car up for the fifth time.

Horrendous traffic today back home to pickup some tools and write a check for a vendor before returning in equally horrendous traffic back to work again. But the good news is still managed to squeeze out a 33 going home and a 35.6 on the way back. Tank is at 36.8 mpg for 74 miles. Yep, that's still above my record tank of 33.3 mpg...

The trip home wasn't as fruitful as the one in. 5:00 pm traffic was awful. Beep and creep right off the bat. 35 mpg to the wifes office. Then up to 37 mpg to a library close to her office. I managed to get the sg up to 48 mpg by the time we got in the driveway. The today reading was 46 mpg.

Nice work, Ken! That's a good number to maintain. :Banane35:

SO CLOSE!!!!!!

I "made" my own luck this morning. :) Ended my 2nd FAS with 43.4mpg on the SG, then pulled out to stop at the first light. Watched it plummet to 32mpg because I couldn't shut off (too many people at the intersection). Struggled to get it up past 40mpg at the top of 169 (41.4mpg) and then proceeded to pull mostly 15+mph deltas all the way down so I could get through the last north section light at 45+mpg. :D I kept it up where possible and...

70F, no wind, overcast:

49.8mpg for 25.8mi (Home to work)

Not a record but good enough to raise the ol' tank to 46.9mpg over 221mi (222.6mi ODO) with 11.3g left and the needle just touching the bottom of the F mark.

:woot: :D

A little more and I'll have her back in range of my goal. :) I'll have to plot my course for the afternoon drive because I've got to stop by the townhouse to meet the new tenant who will be moving in soon. Hopefully I won't be fighting the same headwind that plagued me the last 5 times I went there...

I'm driving to the cabin again this weekend so we'll see if I can duplicate those 49s I pulled on the way back last time. I've a suspicion it is a bit downhill going that direction but a guy can hope, can't he?

64.1/38 mi on way home
61.9/35 mi on way in - took back roads

I posted a FE test I ran last weekend (in lieu of HF2007 :)) as a file in the FILES section. I could not get it to post to a thread... Similar results to what Tarabells HCH article contained but I was suprised at just how badly (a lot of) AC can beat down your FE.

Tank at 58.x with about 1/2 left - up from 55.x from weekend "testing". Hope to drag it north of 60 by next refill.

I finally dialed-in the commute, I think. The CT commute killed me because of the many stop signs, impatient drivers on narrow roads, and generally lousy conditions for FE. This 55-60mph steady-state stuff is a completely different animal and it took a week or two to figure out how to manage the system efficiently. I'm still learning stuff every day but at least the general formula is pretty clear: DWL to keep the engine betwee 1500RPM and 2000RPM when possible, up to 2400RPM when absolutely necessary. Enter the shallow down-hill stretches with a little excess speed to support pure glide (albeit with the engine spinning away) for as long as possible. Rinse and repeat, and avoid touching the battery at all costs. I have also learned to run errands right after work when the system is warm and conditions are favorable, usually resulting in a very healthy boost to the tank average.

I think that's about it. The analog tach has been my best friend as of late.

I've been having a tough go of it lately. Numbers between 29-31 where I'd been expecting 32-34. I've already found a couple mechanical snafus and fixed them: bad vent valve in cooling system reservoir and a cracked vacuum hose. Still not getting the numbers I was expecting.

Had a flat a couple weeks ago which led to a pair of new tires. I did the best I could within budget limitations; I got Kumho Solus KH16's, grand touring tires with a "highway" tread, 44 psi rated vs. my old tires 35 psi rating.

My plywood + plastic home brew air dam is temporarily removed, at a friends house being cloned in fiberglass. I fabbed up a replacement in coroplast. I thought the coroplast version was better but maybe not. I just have to hang in there and keep looking for mecahnical glitches and possible improvements.

Gassed up for 81.8mpg (712.1 miles, 8.71gal). This tank was mostly interstate at 60-65mph, but with 2 trips through downtown Anderson ,SC to add variety. The most notable events while driving through this tank was the guy who almost ran off the road while trying to get far away enough from me in the passing lane to get my car completely framed in his cell phone camera. The cop in Due West who pulled me over, not, as he explained it, because I had done anything wrong (he didn't even ask for my licence/registration), but because he was curious about the car and wanted to ask questions about it (I asked him and he said there was nothing illegal about my car). And finally the mechanic at the Honda specialty garage (where I stopped to get some parts) who said he thought "the martians had landed" when my car glided silently ICE-off and apparently wheel-less (full skirts on all 4 wheels) into their parking lot. Then of course all of the mechanics and the garage owners had to come out to ask questions and take pictures.

I will probably be down a few mpg for the next few tanks. I finally broke down and got new tires (Sumitomo HTR T4 165/70R13) to replace the worn out Michelin Harmony 175/70R13 on my car. It is getting hard to find tires in my car's OEM size, but these Sumitomo's are suppose to be LRR tires and have a max pressure rating of 51psi (I promptly filled them to 60psi). They initially started out draggier than my old tires, taking a pulse width of 4.5, rather than 3.7 on the SuperMID to maintain the 30 to 65mph speed range on level roads, but they have gotten better in the 70 miles I have driven them so far. My car gets the same mileage when driving at speeds from 30 to 65mph (and only slightly less at 70mph). It takes additional gas to increase the speed, but once at constant speed, the mpg's go back up to where they were at the lower speed, and I get the fuel used in acceleration back in coasting distance when dropping back down to the lower speed.

Wayne ...was this no good/so-so or is it actually pretty darned good ?
Let see? Delta is hittin almost 90 and playing 'cones' with a dead Geo and a Camry ?
Papamile saying that the driver plays no part in the driving equation even at a 70 day yesterday with a possible 60 tank ?
psy is thinkin 140+% over epa is not so good

Why so non-chalant ? I realize bad days happen and "we" can do better ...but jeez louise !
Lets be a lil up beat ! 'K? :) I'd say those were some decent numbers ! :Banane48:

Ive not complained. I can take a brand new car and get better than epa hwy with 700 or so miles on it. I think I can do as good or maybe better with this car than the Civic... If it doesn't start having problems.

I have no doubts Wayne would be in the mid 50's or better in it,,, right off the bat.

Hi All:

___Very interesting comments these past few hours ;)

___71 – 75 degrees and a 5 -10 mph headwind. 54.8 into the lot. The Accord is so much more then the Ranger is when it comes to highway cruise. Quiet, comfortable, handles really well and most of all, the FE is a lot easier to get :D

___The only negative is now we are on the back side of summer heading into the fall so only 2 or 3 more months of warm temps and really great segments to look forward too. Other then our Southern members who are looking for the winter respite from A/C when their segments blow through the roof and they laugh at all of us for wearing coats, hats and gloves while driving in 20 and below temps :)

The tank is continuing an upward trend and now sits at 47.9mpg over 287mi (288.0mi ODO) with 10.0g left and the fuel gauge indicating 7/8ths.

Big difference compared to what I started with on Monday! :D

42.3 MPG this morning. I only had to stop at two lights and one stop sign. The stop sign and one of the lights were quick (maybe 5 seconds for the light). The other light I FASed to a stop and I watched my voltage in my battery tick down and down and down... I determined burning a little gas was better than needing a jump at the start of rush hour.

I'm going to get the battery tested on my way home from work. Would one of you kind folks remind me? Thanks.

SG read 41.8 on commute in this morning. When I can time those lights and not use A/C, I can get really good mileage. When I can't it is tougher. Morning commute is always better because it's cool and not as crowded. A/C and heavier traffic always kill me on the way home.

Great numbers everyone!!

Michael, don't forget to get the battery tested. ;)

I had to go on a quick jaunt to pick up some fruit for a pot luck at work today and I took a friend along who is interested in what I've been up to with hypermiling. This is the first time he has ridden with me since I started getting serious about this. I'd say the numbers were pretty good for an unknown route (he was giving directions) with plenty of hills (not much for P&G but plenty of FAS) and he got the "real deal" as we traveled. We've been discussing this stuff for a while and he has been able to consistently peg 25mpg in his 2000 V6 Mustang AT with mostly city driving and a few techniques I told him about -- I think it is rated for 21 on the highway?? Not bad, huh? :) He'll probably get a ScanGauge in the near future and he's seriously interested in a FEH. :D

Anyway, 82F, no wind, sunny:

46.7mpg for 5.9mi (Work to Cub)
31.7mpg for 2.0mi (Cub to friend's house)
44.9mpg for 4.7mi (Friend's house to work)

SG reports I'm down to 47.6mpg (not bad!) over 300mi (300.6mi ODO) with 9.7g left and one needle width under the 7/8ths mark. :D

Boy, I'm enjoying my driving time these days -- higher numbers here I come!

Back to the regular grind today. Can't say what my a.m. commute was, other than pretty good. It didn't occur to me until about 2 miles into it that I hadn't reset my Can-View trip readings. Trip downtown today in 6:00AM Eisenhower traffic, pretty steady 50-55 mph in PACKED right lane, did a bit of pulse and NICE-on coasting 49-56, pulled a35.6 into the lot at the job site. Way back was just a bit less, was half on surface streets, and going home got a 40.9. Way back into work now was a 38.2 in medium traffic and road construction. Tank is at 35.7 for 177 miles. Trip home wasn't good. Got to the wifes office at 41 mpg. That wasn't to bad. Then I picked her up and on out to Peoria. What a cluster. Grid lock within a block. Humans really are stupid. My mpg sunk. I'd had enough. Jumped a curb and went around some buildings and finally made it to the freeway on ramp area. I should have known better than to pull out behind a lady in a SUV yacking her hoe azz off on a cell phone. I knew better! So here I am behind SUV yak yak hoe. And what does she do you ask. She points that SUV at the on ramp. Then locks the brakes up on the on ramp because the holes in traffic are only big enough for a *(&%^#&^(*&()*& semi to get into. I passsed her stupid azz on the right and hit the hole in traffic I had scoped out a block back. At this point the SG is down to 38 mpg. But Im safely on I-44 heading for hwy 75. On 75 we hit a 2 or 3 mile back up. Ive got the mpg back up to 40 mpg. But its back to beep and creep with the idiot mass's. I by pass all of this on my daily grind. I've been having a tough go of it lately. Numbers between 29-31 where I'd been expecting 32-34 ...

Above was from 7/24. Doing better now, 31.7 mpg for 257 miles which is about where I was before several systems developed issues.

FWIW, keep an eye on tire pressures. My new front tires lost about three pounds in about ten days.

And, at least for the fuel/ignition computers in old Volvos, if rebooting via disconnection from battery power you can count on compromised FE and performance for roughly 40 miles before it fully recovers.

Hmmm. Based on Skywre97's recent post re. dropping battery voltage and my recent vacuum leak, a gauge set would be a nice thing. Vacuum + voltage + digital ECT would be real nice but it's not in the budget.

___Chuck, you are doing quite well even in the Dallas heat!

___Craig, great to have another Accord pilot on board and 38 is doing quite well with her. Are you SG-II equipped and just wait until you have finally mastered her subtleties and the breakout occurs ;)

___Bruce, you would absolutely die if you had a Prius-II in your drive. I know, I know but still

:star: :messenger3: :rainbow:  :star: Well the stars and planets finally aligned and smiled.

Yesterday going home I exited the freeway as usual, around 68.5mpg. No chance of making 70. But about 2 miles further --I amaze myself, I’m at 70. Well no chance of holding it I thought because the next street I turn on there’s always a lot of drivers in a hurry or hotrodding and it’s impossible to glide into red lights or drive at a reasonable 30mph. But this time there’s nobody coming up in my rear-view mirror. A couple cars do but they go around. So I’m able to stretch out glides and this time at the end I hit that little hill just before my house, and go up it at 20mph on pure battery and park at 70.3. (Second time breaking 70 for round trip, @39 miles. Previous was 70.4)

AND it gets better.

This morning I hit 40mpg at 1 mile from my house.

I trash the EPA (50) and leave it in the dust at 3 miles.

I’m hitting 60 at 5 miles out.

Oh boy. Oh boy.

Then, at the point I’m USUALLY hitting 60mpg -- I’m at 71.

Nobody ever smiled going to work as much as me today.

Then the 80 milestone comes up fast and gets cracked. I see 80.9 mpg.
I’m wondering if I’m leaving some kind of mini-black hole or space/time warp behind on the freeway.

Brought it into work for a new PR of 77.4mpg (19.1 miles), 10 mpg better than my typical run for this segment.

There was no wind I could detect. Just the right Goldilocks amount of traffic going an even 45-48mph traffic in the right lane. And no FAS.

Wow, another downpour this morning. July is literally shaping up to be the wettest & coldest month in Austin history. 88 & rainy every day. I think I'd prefer 103 & sunny with windows cracked/down for mileage, but my utility bills are lovin' it.

100 to work in the rain. While 100 is sub-par on the way end (think ~70 on the flats), I still enjoy the little pleasure of a 100mpg trip in adverse conditions.

But this rain is putting a damper on the 80mpg tank. 79.4 to start the day, likely 78+ by the end. I'm waiting for clear skies & 85s to rebound.

Larry & Jared's attempts for 80 at the same time are very motivating. And Tarabell seeing 80.9 in her HCH is awesome!

Yes, I got the scangauge about a month ago. It has really helped and improvement has been substantial. I always do pretty well on the morning commute, but not so well in the evening due to heavier traffic and A/C usage. (it can get quite hot here.)

I had a pretty good today. My wife had the day off so I didn't have as much driving to do.:) I got to work just early enough that the "today" average reset from the car setting so long. I had to do some calculating to come up with the day's overall average.
1) 70.5-5.9
2) 82.2-9.0
3) 106-10.5
4) 80.9-6.0
5) 113-5.7
Average for today was 88.8 and the tank is at 82.6 after 169.7.

Here's one for Hobbit: When I'm turning left it almost sounds like a metallic noise coming from the right-front corner. This only happens when turning(left) and not while going straight, turning right, or braking.

The new tires are knocking my mileage down by about 9mpg. For the past 2 days I've been averaging about 62 mpg going into work and 81mpg on the way home (it was about 68mpg and 88mpg with the old tires). It typically takes about 2000 to 4000 miles to break in the new rubber and for the mileage to come up to what is normal for the tire.

We road tripped to AR last week to attend my grandmother's funeral. We put a lot of miles on our HiHy in less than a week's time as we traveled to AR, tried to squeeze in some visits across the state, and returned to CO. Anyway, we drove 2,305 miles at an average FE of 27.14 mpg. (The EPA highway rating is 27.) Last year, we drove a very similar trip in the 2005 Odyssey w/ VCM (EPA highway rating of 28). With very similar driving conditions, we averaged 26.27 mpg over 2,815 miles. So, the HiHy is getting slightly better highway fuel economy than the minivan it replaced. Of course, there is no comparison with city driving.

I'm still working on a tank in my Civic. I've kept it all to myself and I'm at 74.5 mpg after 826.7 miles. I topped off this tank so I have at least 14 gallons to work with.

Holy cats, everyone!!!

Ken, nice work!

Tara!!!!!!!

Eric!

Wish I had such nice numbers to post! I didn't have my best showing on the way home -- had two trips with no warm up routes and the numbers really show it. :( At any rate, I've still got a record tank going! I'm going to have to fill it tomorrow though because I'm driving to the cabin and will have to use AC for the wife -- there isn't enough left for me to be sure I can pull that off and still have enough left for Monday's trip to the new job.

So...

77F, no wind, drippy:

39.5mpg for 3.9 (Work to Jake's Bar and Grill -- Yeesh!! :p)
48.4mpg for 37.3mi (Jake's to home)

I'm still at a record 48.1mpg over 407mi (408.6mi ODO) with 7.5g left and the fuel gauge indicating 2 needle widths over 1/2 tank. :D

Not sure what I'm going to do tomorrow as the trip to Costco for gas is too short to pull decent numbers. I might have to take a circuitous route to save my number!!

So Tara, how does it feel to pull numbers a solid 30mpg over what I'm hitting with my best efforts? :D:D:D

Funny thing about working in the middle of nowhere: If you flake out on the road headed to the office and do something stupid, people are going to know who you are. This morning it was some guy in a Firebird who couldn't stand that I was driving the limit. The truck behind me was following 2-3 seconds back, the firebird about 0.1s behind him and probably driving the guy nuts. A half mile from the gate this guy gets a clear passing lane and blows past us at 75-80 easily in the 55 zone, exhaust roaring. I was thinking "No way would he be one of our guys, doing that so close to the entrance." Yup. Right turn signal, brake lights, turns in. About a minute later later I glide up behind him at the gate, and this is where it gets hysterical. He opens it up and tears off toward the parking lot, I pull up the the guard who looks at me and says "I still like yours better." :D I chuckle, say thanks, and go park to find that my tank is holding steady at 63.6mpg. Walked into the building right behind Firebird guy.

Happy Friday.

Cross-town commute today, 79 MPG. I was pleased considering a small detour (to pick up oil filters) on a higher speed route. I've adjusted my pulses based on Dan's MPG Challenge technique; so far, so good. Maybe between that and about 3K on the new tires now, I can nudge these trips back above 80. In fact it could have been 80 today if not for very poor timing on my part for one particular red light.

So we just have different kinds of horses. Sometimes Mudder goes with my program but mostly I have to go with hers—I’m just the jockey flogging it. ;)

Heading home yesterday starting with 77mpg on the odometer was quite the delight. It was some thrill driving home all the way without seeing it below 72. All went well and pulled into the driveway at 74.8 mpg (new PR) ready to take a pic and then  husband says move the car, we have to take the trash cans out tonight. Nooooo, have to back the car out and park on the street. So this is what I had after that:

On pace for an 85 day assuming the rain holds off. 76 uphill to the mother-in-law's, then 127 to work. Tank should be back to 79+ if all goes as plan.

Then no more rain, peg 85s, and push up through 80 to stay.

Jim/Dan, what are Dan's HF pulse techniques? I'm interested to hear more, assuming you don't mean this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCQaWHRO5OQ

I've added a new tweak to my trip back home. It's 0.3 miles up, a quick left, and 0.3 miles back down a hill again to home. I can do it in ~75-80mpg, which is negligible to the tank. More importantly, at slow speeds it can dramatically power up the pack (6 bars guaranteed), which I need given my pack use early in the commute which when starting out with less than 6 bars seems to at times great excessive headroom and lower pulse mileage (too much gas recharging the pack).

Oh I'm not so sure about that, Tara. You've got a pretty talented right foot there and I'm sure it wouldn't be just me testifying to that if asked!! You, Laurie, and Mr. Kite have it going on with those HCHs -- it has to be a lot more than the car since I sure don't see it elsewhere!!!

Nice work, Ken!!! :Banane35:

Now I've got to take my plow horse to the fillup station. ;)

Huh. I'm not sure I believe what I just saw at the gas station...

I took a longer route to try to goose the mileage up a little (didn't really work) and pulled in with an expectedly low number. The fill kinda shocked me though...

84F, no wind, sunny:

34.6mpg for 3.0mi (Home to Costco via extra roads)
40.0mpg for 1.8mi (Costco to home after adjusting fill offset)

So the SG reports 47.9mpg over 410mi (411.8mi ODO) which I'm thinking is excellent! :Banane03: I'm expecting that it might be a bit high though, and HOPING it will still beat my previous best. So I start filling to try to get to the 8.6g SG thinks I've used and it clicks off at 6.5g. Okay, time to start stuffing...

And...

It stops at 8.277 with gas right to the edge of the filler neck!!

Uh... what just happened?

So here I am back at the house and it seems the gas I put in means I got 49.752?!

WHAT THE?!?:bananajump:

I'm starting to think there's an air bubble or something in there! I'll take it!!! If it's wrong I'll get a lower tank next fill I'm sure. For now I'll be happy that I went further on half a tank than I used to go on a full tank before filling -- and it was still a couple of needle widths over the 1/2 mark! I did adjust the SG offset on fillup so my numbers might be reading high for this tank. I've got another 15.9g to find out. ;)

PaleMelanesian
07-27-2007, 02:18 PM
I've been recording the offset for each tank and doing a cumulative calculation on it. It's getting pretty consistent now, 8 tanks later.

If SG says 10 gallons and it's at +6% offset (my current), then its unadjusted measurement is 9.4 gallons. Dividing the sum of those two over several tanks should give you a pretty accurate offset.

Oh, and Congratulations! SOOOOOO close to that 50!

I HATE breaking in new tires! Gassed up and calculated the worst mileage I've gotten for a long time, 60.4mpg (340.3 miles/5.63gal). Another contributor to the low MPG's was driving through the series of heavy T-storms they've been getting in the western NC area lately. I'll just have to suck it up for the next few thousand miles until the new tires get broken in. When I got my previous set of tires in my pre-aero days, my mileage dropped from just over 50 mpg to 44mpg for about 3000 miles.

brick
07-27-2007, 02:48 PM
I got off work early to meet the home inspector at the new place (pretty sure, anyway) and the tank went all to pot. The entire thing is 55mph with some decent sized hills, warp stealth down the back side of every one but never quite making up for the pulse. Painful. And that is the alternative route...the primary is a 70mph interstate. My only hope is that part of this has to do with my own tire issues given that I rotated them a few days ago and they need to wear-in a little. Oh, right...62.5mpg now.

This crap is going to kill me if I can't find a better way to handle it. The speeds are just too high.

Great job, Ken!! At this rate you're going to catch my numbers before too much longer!

And so for me begins that poor tank... ;)

I had to run some errands and go to dinner on a terrible route -- there are two large hills to climb and the second has no less than 3 lights on the upslope. Of course I got stopped at all 3 just as I usually do. Not to mention the one in the valley between the two hills -- killing any chance of coasting through. The first trip is really interesting though. I finally got the tires up to 55 yesterday and figured I'd just try something different on that first hill. I killed the engine half way up, coasted over the top (it is two lane -- why didn't I ever try this before???) at about 23mph, down the backslope, coasted around the turn (red light but cross traffic turning) half way to the next light, pulsed, got around the turn at that light, pulsed right before the next right, coasted half way down to the turn into Home Depot, pulsed again, then glided into the lot and about 2/3 of the way across it into a slot. I had to brake at that point!!! I could have rolled right by the building altogether!! Last time I tried that I could barely get into the lot. 5psi made a BIG difference in the coast distance.

First 2 trips at 87F, rest at 83F, no wind first two, 15mph headwind rest, sunny:

46.9mpg for 1.1mi (Home to Home Depot -- PR!!!)
37.0mpg for 1.5mi (Home Depot to home -- can't time the left turns)
21.9mpg for 1.7mi (Home to Denny's -- blech -- dang lighted hills!!)
24.4mpg for 0.5mi (Denny's to Kohl's -- wife forgot her sister's birthday present so I left while she waited for the food)
26.2mpg for 0.9mi (Kohl's back to Denny's -- see why an electric scooter would be good for erands???)
44.4mpg for 143mi (Home to Cabin -- nasty headwind and I think it is uphill -- how do I check elevations?)

This leaves the tank at 43.4mpg over 151mi (152.3mi ODO) with 12.5g left and the fuel gauge touching the top of the F mark. I can definitely tell the mileage is worse just from that.

Maybe I'll be surprised and discover there is a really excellent route to and from my new job location? To help me pull this tank back up? Well regardless I'll just be happy to be AT the new job. :D :Banane30:

i'm ba-a-a-ck. had a great, though very beastly HOT time at the horse show. lot of firsts for me (not first places, but first time experiences) and we did well......my car sat in the garage during most of the 95 degree weather at home.

hypermiling a truck and trailer doesn't work. i needed 3/4 of a tank to get there, due to the prevailing head winds. got all of 12MPG. (sorry....i wanted to drive with a bag on my head, but the friend who went with me wouldn't let me). i only used a half tank on the way home, but hubby took the truck and went somewhere before i could check the mileage.

today it was back to the barn to ride. even with my gauges being somewhat off, as i mentioned before i left, i pulled at 66.9 on the way there. going home i had no choice but to put the air on. it was in the 90s and humid again, and after being out in it all week, i just couldn't stand it again. i got home with somewhere around 62, which i suppose is still decent.

He said his car has 130K on the clock and was thinking about possibly getting a hybrid but wasn't sure he would fit real well in a hybrid(he's ~6'1" and weighs ~275). I told him I would be glad to take him out for a ride in my Prius and he agreed!:woot: I might even let him drive;) Then, things got real interesting. He offered to let me come on his show which he cohosts. This would be extremely difficult since he works the morning show while I'm at work.:( Then, we talked about how I may be able to talk the news director into doing a story on driving for FE. This station, through it's main station and it's network of repeater staions, covers northern and central Indiana as well as parts of southwest lower Michigan. They even reach into the Valporaiso, IN and the outer edges of Chicagoland. This could get very exciting.:woot:

Oh, before I get too excited and forget, here are today's numbers:
1) 74.9-14.0 miles(home to fair)
2) 85.4-23.2(fair to home with a detour through my old town to see if my son's friend was home)
Average for today was 81.04. The tank is at 82.8 after 252.0 miles with all 10 pips remaining.

Maintenance day yesterday: oil change, air filter change, a fresh coat of 303 Protectant on the dash and upper door panels.

Tank was over 70 MPG ... until m'lady had me take her on a shopping run. Now it's at 69 and some change. It'll take a deeper dive next week when we hit the road for a short vacation.

HOT HOT HOT.

wayne, i didn't realize until i watched your video from hybridfest, that lean burn is when the display runs between 80-100MPG. heck, that's where mine is most of the time. sometimes (like today) it was on lean burn and also showing 4 bars of charge while i was going up hill.....

must be how i got 70MPG on my way to the barn, and 67.3 on the way home. i guess i still have the touch. :)

I didn't do much driving today. My segments were pretty much 5.2 miles all day(odd) except for one short little trip from church to a small store and back for a few last minute things before we took my daughter to camp. I had 21.6 miles and got 78.7 for the day. The low segment of the day was the trip from church to the store and back(forgot to write down the mpg and distance( ) and the high segment was 105 for 5.2 miles from my daughter's summer camp to home. The tank is mow at 82.5 after 273.4 miles with 9 pips showing.

A 55 MPG segment Friday morning on the way to work for 49.7 overall. Still haven't broken 50 on a morning commute.

However, I did manage my first 50 MPG (50.2) stop-to-stop (no rolling start) segment Friday evening. I guess the 90+°F temps helped. Tank's around 45 MPG on the Scangauge for over 400 miles of mostly short drives, probably a bit better in reality.

I've been getting a bit more aggressive at it lately -- lower accels to steady speed, earlier FAS points, using more throttle downhill than up, etc. I think I'm to the point of besting the mileage from a low speed TCC lock as long as nobody is behind me.

Hot @*#&, Ken! Awesome!!! :flag:

Larry, you continue to amaze me with 80+mpg day after day after...!!!!

Laurie, NICE. Good to see you posting again and I'm glad the horse stuff went well! :Banane57:

I had an interesting trip back. Hot and humid with plenty of traffic... I had to drive the first 35mi with the AC on high until the wife fell asleep (I did do some covert P&G with NICE ON during that), then I did the good old NICE ON P&G with AC on during the Glide. She gets T'd off if she catches me at it but can't really tell the difference when she isn't paying attention. Pulled out on 10 to get home and snagged a spot behind a Sienna going a bit fast for my tastes but okay for P&G with the heavy traffic. I followed that one until it pulled into the left lane to get around a... JACKPOT! Sprinter camper!! The driver was going about 5 under (bless his soul!) and that allowed a text book 10mph delta P&G with the speed limit as my upper bound! I stayed behind him for the better part of 100mi and pulled the average up from 43 to 49.4mpg!

Question to the group -- does anyone else do P&G for long distances behind a draft target? I typically pulse and then start the glide as I'm approaching the target, gauging so that I drift into the "sweet spot" unpowered and can hang there for a while before dropping back, then rinse and repeat. I didn't have much opportunity for FASing because of the wife's temperature demands, so the trip number looks REALLY good considering I was mostly doing just NICE ON glides, and with the AC on to boot!

88F, occasional gusts of wind, sunny:

49.7mpg for 146mi (Cabin to home -- PR!!!)

The tank is still suffering and I am about 69mi behind where I was at this usage last tank, but SG reports 46.3mpg over 297mi (297.7mi ODO) with 9.6g left and the fuel gauge showing 2 needle widths under 3/4. Of course that last tank also showed 8.4g remaining at that point...

Oh, and the above was with an average speed of 52mph as well! :D

Tomorrow I get the fun of trying to optimize new routes for my new job! :Banane33:

Very nice numbers by all recently :D

My struggle for 80 continues...

From thursday, running an errand and then home:
73.0 / 9.2 miles / 86F (boo, traffic)
106 / 2.4 miles / 86F

Today:
83.2 / 4.5 miles / 79F (this segment's record: 85.3 MPG)
81.3 / 5.7 miles / 84F
107 / 2.9 miles / 86F
72.8 / 5.3 miles / 86F (this segment's record: 74.9 MPG)

82.1 / 18.4 miles for today.

The tank is at 79.9 / 77 miles / all 10 pips. Why does that last 0.1 seem like everything?? ;)

Other statistics for this week, monday to sunday:
37.2 miles driven
57 miles biked to replace driving (60.5%)
25 miles biked recreationally

Hi MnFocus:

___You are really knocking out some decent numbers for as short the trips are!

___Sean, almost 50 on unfamiliar roads? Jesshhhh!!!

___Jerad, I just don’t know where you stand given the lack of detail :D

___Hooked the Ranger up to the trailer and pulled the mowers out of the garage. After cutting the grass put it back in. SG reported .3 mpg over ~ 50 feet and that included a short bit of FAS before touching the brakes :( Took the Ranger to the Sam’s club for groceries today. 34.7 over .8 miles there and 38.9 back. Traffic was not to kind both ways :(

___Good Luck

___Wayne

I was lucky to get about half of that with my '94 Ranger, Wayne . If I only knew some of what I now ...then :(

Now as far as short trip /decent numbers ? I had one of those Eureka! moments when I saw a Prius being pushed barefoot ...:D
