While I was on vacation I was talking to my High School Senior nephew who is on an EV team at his Michigan high school. He was totally enthused about electric cars (he wants a Tesla in the same way I wanted a Ferrari when I was young) and very focused on achieving academic excellence and the good things that go with it. It certainly has helped him develop a practical interest in engineering and electric vehicles. Maybe these kids will be the ones who resurrect the electric car.
Googling the topic makes me think that although the competitions/leagues aren't very well publicized yet, they are good idea whose time has come. It seems like with the current cost rules a high school should be able to organize a team for only about the cost of their football team's laundry bill. The activity certainly would fit with most high schools' industrial technology or science programs. I thought some of the people here might be interested in checking out some of the links at this page http://www.neca-racing.com/links.html to see how it works.
