Metro Detroit motorists were muttering "here we go again," as gas prices edged up Monday and are poised to soar in the near future.
The local price at the pump has risen 9 cents since the Fourth of July, to an average price of $3.13 for a gallon of regular on Monday, according to AAA Michigan.
The experts warn consumers to brace for hikes of a dime or more, and possibly soon.
"We're about to see hikes on the magnitude of what we saw in April and May," said Tom Kloza, chief analyst at the Oil Price Information Service. "Prices ranging from $3.25 to $3.50 are coming, and they could be coming very quickly."
Refinery problems throughout the region are to blame, he said. "If you're living in a state that doesn't touch an ocean, prices are going up," he said.
Higher prices already have some local motorists grumbling.

Right Lane Cruiser 07-10-2007, 09:35 AM Lovely.
On the positive side, I'm seen significant savings in fuel expenditures thanks to Wayne and crew here!! :D
krousdb 07-10-2007, 09:39 AM I happen to be in Detriot today. I just paid $3.25 for Regular unleaded to fill up my 2007 Chevy Malibu rental car.
johnf514 07-10-2007, 09:42 AM I love it - leadfoot drivers groan and we cheer when gas prices rise. ;)
laurieaw 07-10-2007, 09:43 AM when i stopped for coffee (no gas yet) this morning, it was 3.19. does anybody think this will slow down the speeders? or just make them pissier than they already are?
Chuck 07-10-2007, 09:50 AM It does not seem too high for a pair of construction workers that could have passed me by but choose to give me a hard time.

Until people get it out of their heads that more time on the road = more gas used, it'll just make folks go faster. :(
BailOut 07-10-2007, 10:04 AM This is one price spike that's going to hit me in the pocketbook. We made the decision to sell our boat as its 5.0L V8 engine and its out drive (underwater) exhaust is no longer compatible with our world view. We'll be replacing it with a kayak and a small "sunfish" sailboat.
I posted it on craigslist.com on Sunday, and already have appointments to haul it up to Lake Tahoe to present and test drive it both this afternoon and and tomorrow evening. If no one buys it then these events will continue to occur for a while. Although I haul it as efficiently as possible it still takes an awful lot of fuel to traverse Mount Rose with a 4,800lb tow load.
I'm going to burn through more fuel over the next few days than I have in the last few months. It's for the best in the long run, though.

Yep, a big boat is an expensive toy in many ways. Hope you get lots of enjoyment being on the water in the kayak and sailboat instead. If you feel the need for speed you can go to a water park and hit the slides. Hmm, that sounds kind of refreshing about now! :Banane28:
mparrish 07-10-2007, 11:46 AM High gas prices = more CleanMPG press opportunities. :) It's a fine line between "contacting the local papers to write a story" and "harassment". I'm fairly certain I'm doing the former ;)

Think it's "when" - not "if" they do a story on you. :)
Hi Marc:
___You made me smile :) Only a CleanMPG’er could relish high fuel costs leading to even more press :D
___Good Luck

philmcneal 07-10-2007, 02:33 PM heh better fill up gas before it tops over the 1.10$ a liter again, usually when gas is under that price I see lineups!
WriConsult 07-10-2007, 03:10 PM Weird. Prices are dropping here. Still in the $2.90s. We're usually well above the national average. Guess the Alaskan oilfields (and the NW's sole 3 refineries) are producing well right now.
MnFocus 07-10-2007, 05:22 PM It's been $3.05 here since Friday a.m. . I've been hearing nothing but squawking about it since . My suggestions are still going unheeded . Air up , Slow down!
Yet I only hear "Blah Blah Blah ! " and I stand there looking like this--->:)
GrendelKhan 07-10-2007, 05:48 PM lol @ "Air up , Slow down"
I'm gonna use that one.
Right now, it's "I'm really not sure what I'm getting for mileage. I've only had the car a week, driven 400 miles, and the tank is still half full. But about 40mpg, I think". I love the faces they make... "400 miles, and the tank is half full? That can't be right..."
I can't wait til I get it up over the EPA rating... I'm hoping for 50.

Earthling 07-10-2007, 06:03 PM Detroit News lamenting high gasoline prices.
There's something ironic about that.
Harry
SpartyBrutus 07-10-2007, 07:40 PM Hmm - national gas prices are up 78% over last 5 years or about 12-13% per year compounded. Not inflation adjusted.
So, to maintain fuel costs, you would need to keep improving your annual FE about 12% per year.
50 mpg
56
63
70
79
Thats a good goal.
diamondlarry 07-10-2007, 07:41 PM I saw gas for $3.199 today in Elkhart, IN up from $3.059 yesterday. Maybe my work commute and errand runs will start getting slower/higher mpg?
Chuck 07-10-2007, 08:44 PM It's $2.85 at my local Shell station
Xringer 06-05-2008, 10:52 AM And here we are, a little less than one year later.. And a little more than one dollar higher.. :(
