Honda To Challenge Prius With a Dedicated Hybrid Model
Date posted: 06-27-2007

Honda learned from Toyota's success with the Prius that hybrid customers want their decision to drive a hybrid to be visible, so the company is planning a dedicated hybrid model that will feature its own unique styling rather than simply being a hybrid-powered version of an existing model, according to Dan Bonawitz, vice president of corporate planning and logistics for American Honda Motor Co. Inc.

The new hybrid-specific model will be the previously announced car that will slot in below the Civic Hybrid in price, he said. Honda has said that the car will debut in 2009.

Before rolling out its Civic and Accord hybrids, which have never enjoyed the success of Toyota's distinctive Prius, the company surveyed consumers about their opinion on the need for a separate hybrid model, Bonawitz explained. "They broke 50-50," he said. "But in the marketplace, the Prius went one way and we went the other."

Stung by this change in consumers' motivations, Honda changed course. "Now buying a hybrid is very much about making a statement," Bonawitz said. "Obviously, this is leading us to bring a new hybrid to market that is uniquely styled." The new car, while lower in price than the Civic Hybrid, will still be a family car, and will not be a tiny commuter car like the Honda Insight, he added. Despite the car's low price, Honda will not lose money on it, he said. "It will not be a loss leader."

What this means to you: A new efficiency-oriented hybrid for a reasonable price might finally make a viable argument for hybrids on purely financial terms in addition to environmental terms. Personally, I don't think this will even hurt Prius sales that much. It will expand the hybrid market. If a hybrid were available at a lower price point than $23k I think a lot more people would buy one. I wonder what they'll do to get the price down. Presumably smaller and "de-contented"?

I welcome the new hybrid option because that just means more choices for me when I get a hybrid in 2009. I do remember them saying that the new honda hybrid might have features like the Remix.

Not sure how close it will be to it, but if they make it a 4 door it will sell pretty well.

Well...last week I sent a check to Mike Dabrowski to upgrade my Insight with a MIMA system...I believe the average FE gain is 20%. For the unfamiliar, this allows the driver to control the electric assist/recharging - not the computer. Figure my car has many more years of life yet. Should last until something decisively outperforms the Insight.

Do you know if Mike has something to put in the HCH II yet?

And no, sorry. There's no MIMA for the Civic Hybrid. The control signals are completely different.

Thanks for the information. Perhaps in the future?

I don't understand why the HCH2 isn't giving prius a run for thier money! Look at the dallar savings and only a few miles differents in performance?

Because it looks like a regular Civic.
Maybe not quite as roomy as the Prius II?
Unfortunately I really do think those are the reasons.

I think Bruce is right. The HCH is pretty close to the Prius in performance and almost identical in price and equipment. The two biggest differences are the image (Prius tells the whole world you bought a hybrid, HCH isn't noticed by anyone) and cargo space (Prius has 16 cf and can hold very large items with the seats folded down and/or the hatch open; HCH has 10 cf and its seat doesn't even fold, unlike every other Japanese car ever built).

When the HCHII was first announced there was a hatchback version. Then, it was announced the hatchback HCHII would be only Europe at first. It had folding seats that I think are like the Fit. Did Europe ever get this? Will we ever get it?

I hated that my 2000 Civic HX was not a hatchback. The non-folding seat made the HCHII not a real contender for purchase this time.
