Prius III – PHEV and 94 mpg! (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/66260/prius_hits_113mpg.html)

Toyota is charging ahead in the race for domination of the hybrid car market, according to Auto Express spies.
The firm's next Prius will be so efficient it will be the first production car capable of returning more than 110mpg. The newcomer is being developed to try to improve European sales. While the car has been a success in the US, it has met a mixed reaction on this side of the Atlantic, due to the popularity of diesel models.
But now we've been told that engineers working on the new Prius have a fuel economy target of 40km/litre - a mind-boggling 113mpg.
"The whole electrical system has been redesigned to improve economy" said one Toyota engineer. "We are working on a prototype that runs solely on the electric motor in slow traffic, but switches to engine and motor drive when higher speeds are needed." The secret lies with the batteries. The current Prius uses nickel-hydride items, which currently offer the best balance between cost and performance.
But engineers are working on new lithiumion cells, which are lighter, smaller, generate more power and last longer. Subaru and Mitsubishi both plan to sell electric cars by 2010, but Toyota hopes to get its new model on the road as early as 2008.
And improved economy isn't the firm's only goal, as engineers are working on reducing the current car's 10.9-second 0-62mph time by more than a second.
As linked from GCC.
Chuck 04-10-2006, 04:25 PM This four-time Honda driver is getting envious!
This even beats the IMAS/"Insight II".
I might start reconsidering that MIMA upgrade.

Just remember, fellow Honda-phile... it doesn't beat the FCX :D
Of course, it might be more *accessible* to the average consumer than the FCX, both from an ownership and fueling perspective, by 2008.
I'd have to look very hard at a Prius III, to be honest, if 'Yota makes good on these goals. You don't know how much it pains me to say that
brick 04-10-2006, 06:07 PM If Toyota can deliver the goods and I happen to have funds for a new car 'round about 2009 I would be all over that. Then again I expect my Accord to be about 1/3 of the way through its useful life by then so I might have to hold out for 120mpg. ;)
philmcneal 04-10-2006, 07:54 PM don't worry Honda won't let Toyota get all the glory. I'm sure Honda has something up its sleeve (maybe?)
tigerhonaker 04-10-2006, 10:47 PM Well, Guys and Gals, I'm sure glad the (Wife) Loves the New HCH II we just took Delivery of.
I'll let you all figure out why??? ;)
tarabell 04-10-2006, 11:18 PM You're not.....giving her your car are you?
(trying to imagine the unimaginable)
Chuck 04-11-2006, 08:59 AM I expect the 2008 Prius to be better than any previous model. What kind of driving was done on the Prius III? Hypermilers can get that kind of results with current models. When the EPA tests, it may "only" be 80mpg.
Moving Forward - and Way Ahead
Let's conservately say in 2008 the Prius gets 80mpg. GM and DCX will have hybrids, but is the Durango, Tahoe, or Escalade going to even break 25mpg? Hopefully the FEH will be in a second generation and Ford will have other hybrid offerings. I hope Honda will have more hybrid options, but suspect Toyota will show them up, even to the point of getting better fleet mpg than Honda.
In the meantime, I would not be suprized if US gas pump prices in 2008 is around $3.50-4.00. This is assuming that Hugo Chavez and Iran are only fuming at us - not major hissed.
Anyone want to buy a 2008 Tahoe to impress?

Tara,
Well not just yet, anyway. Prius III is not out yet. ;)
Sledge 04-12-2006, 06:46 AM  Me want! ME WANT!! :D
dqdave 04-12-2006, 10:41 AM easy sledge, easy:cool:
Can anyone say....buy toyota stock soon?
even with it's PE above hondas, this company is not sitting around waiting for the chinese to take over the auto industry.
But, don't rule out honda yet!

So, dqdave,
You are still around. :)
dqdave 04-12-2006, 08:02 PM So, Tiger, I'm still curious about your wife taking a liking to you hchII. Does this mean your looking at this new prius? PS. I'm envious of your gas mileage. Our northern Wisconsin weather has just improved to help the mpg.

Dave,
Cathy, the wife has a Mercedes AWD, and I am thinking when this Toyota Prius III comes out that it would be a {Great-Time} to trade.
I think that it will be something to look into. The Honda Dealer that I purchased the HCH II from is also a, Toyota Dealer. :) So I think I could do Business with them on a Prius III.
Wife, would take the HCH II and I would more than likely take the Prius III. The Mercedes that uses 93 Octane fuel, would be gone.
dqdave 04-13-2006, 08:20 AM It's too bad we have to wait so long!
2008-2009 is a long time away. But, it's going to be fun studying/watching it come toward us!:p

Dave,
We are on the Exact-Same-Page. It will be awhile, but sounds like it might just be well worth the, Wait. ;)
Mercedes has a Very Long Ext. Warr. left. We can Wait. :)
dqdave 04-13-2006, 10:50 PM yes, wait, happily wait. And study.:D
If memory serves me right, toyota has about 30 billion in cash. I'm confident that we'll see some wonder advancements with that company in the future. (think fuel cells:eek: ).
But, Honda's small/efficient way of spending it's 10 billion in cash will keep us looking toward that "H" symbol.....happily...

As far as I know, the only two cars that have been driven for at least a million miles is Mercedes and Volvo.

Delta Flyer;
Hey, when your "Right your Right". :D
Chuck 04-14-2006, 08:51 PM Tiger, there are plenty in cyberspace eager to point out my mistakes, including imaginary ones. :p
My 1988 CRX HF lasted "only" 250,000 miles, yet limped along the last four years after a tune-up that nearly melted down the engine and auto care that was somewhat abusive.
Another forum, another thread is talking about environmental costs of making the hybrid vehicle on top of it's use (i.e. sustainability). That CRX did very well. :)

Actually two Honda Accords have done it.

That link is a story that mentions one of them.. the other, I dunno, I guess if you google long enough you'd find it.
Chuck 04-15-2006, 08:53 AM AZBrandon,
Thank you for the article. :)
What makes this Accord different from other million-mile cars is it's not a heavy-bulit vehicle. Proplr expect Mercedes and Volvo to hold up in part because they are relatively heavy. Many people probably think Honda cars are light and can't go this distance.
Chuck 08-05-2010, 05:08 PM The FE estimates of the Prius III seem to have been exaggerated.
Hi Chuck:
Even in PHEV form, 94 + across the board will be a stretch...
We should reformat all these old monsters as they look so blah ;)
Good Luck
Wayne
